Wrestling?

Yeah I remember that show, was watching it when it happened... blew my mind when J.R. made that announcement.

I was also watching it live. I had Sky Digital installed the year previously and did not miss a Raw or PPV during that time. I remember being confused for the most part when they came back from break, and then it started to sink in. I could tell immediately by JR and King's faces that it was not part of the show.

Feels like a lifetime ago now (it kinda was)

Mustafa Ali has shared a story which shows how out of touch Vince McMahon was during his final days in WWE.

During a match before RAW, Mustafa executed a 450 Splash to win the match. Here’s what happened after that, as narrated by Ali on The Wrestling Classic:

“As I’m walking towards Gorilla, towards backstage, Vince (McMahon) typically doesn’t come to Gorilla until RAW starts, and RAW starts immediately after the show. So Vince is walking down the hallway to Gorilla and he bumps into Ariya Daivari. Ariya’s wearing a three-piece suit, and Vince goes up to Ari, he goes, ‘Hell of a finish, kid. That was impressive,’ and keeps walking by, and Ariya, just, ‘Thanks, boss!’ And Ariya walks up and then I walk in and walk by and Ariya’s like, ‘Hey, Vince totally thinks that I’m you…’"

Been watching King Of The Ring 1993 late night the last few days...got to the Bret Hart/Mr Perfect match.

(Ignore the dumb Zack Rynder intro!)

So fucking good. At the start they're just doing headlocks and the crowd are distracted by something. But even just the headlocks look so good because of the way Bret snaps them and how Perfect bumps. As it progresses it gets better and better. Perfect beats the shit out of Bret, knocking him off the apron into an ICE COOLER (the WWF 1993 version of a table bump.) Bret gets a huge comeback with a simple second rope superplex that makes the fans go crazy (no one's looking away from the ring for a second now.) Perfect takes these great flip bumps just off Bret kicking his legs and everyone's fucking SHOCKED he manages to escape a figure four. Perfect gets a desperation sleeper while still selling his leg. When Bret escapes he's fucking exhausted and it's the kind of selling you don't see today. He makes his usual comeback look like a struggle (it's also both their second match of the night.) Bret counter the Perfectplex by suplexing both of them over the top, which was crazy for 1993. Then the perfectly excuted finish with Perfect trying to use a surprise small package but that's a thing Bret does all the time so he counters it. Great match, and I'm not one of those "EVERYTHING WAS BETTER IN THE OLD DAYS" people but yeah this was better.
