Zedric prequel (Story For The Day Spin-Off)

CaptainWacky

I want to smell dark matter
Zedric soared high in the sky above Asland city, higher than any dragon before him, defying the clouds and perhaps even God. Today, life for Zedric was good. He was at the heigh of his power, his brood were stronger than ever before, his fortune continued to grow, the whole of Asland trembled before him and he was getting laid tonight.

He swooped down towards the outskirts of the city where a young human family were freeing. Zedric wasn't actually participating in today's attack, his youngest twin sons Zanon and Zaror were in charge of the operation and doing a fine job. It wasn's surprising that a few humans had managed to escape, they were so small that some always slipped through. Zedric went lower, flying directly over them, blocked the sun. The humans stopped in their tracks. Zedric could feel their terror. He landed in front of them and caught them in his unescapable gaze. Two adults, a mother and father and two young boys. By a strange chance they were twins too...

"Hello there, " rumbled Zedric. "Pleasant day."

The woman cried uncontrollably. The man tried to reach out to comfort her but was in such terror that his hand didn't go the whole way. Zedric turned his great mouth into a smile. A cruel, dragon smile.

"Something upsetting you?" he rumbled.

"You...you monster!" the man managed to get out.

"Monster? There are no monsters. Only Gods and ants," said Zedric. "I think you know which you are."

"The children...please, spare them!" said the woman.

"I have sons too," said Zedric, impassively.

"Then...then you understand!" said the woman.

"I understand that they are dragons. The rightful rules of this land. Your children are nothing. They will live short pointless lives, tilling the fields, making more pathetic offsping of their own...and then die. They are small."

"DON'T SPEAK ABOUT US LIKE THAT!" said the man. "Our lives are worth no less than yours!"

The family were nearly deafened by Zedric's dark laugh.

"You'll...you'll die too!" said the man. "Eventually!" he spat.

It was something Zedric had never seriously considered before and he dismissed it as he dismissed the lives of the family: by opening his mouth and consuming them in fire. A pile of ashes were all that remained, only seconds later.

"I will never die," said Zedric, taking to the air again. He decided to head back to his lair. Suspiria would be waiting for him, as she had been every day for the last thousand years. His reign would go on and it would never end. Never.
