Chicago Bulls guard Alex Caruso was named the winner of the NBA's annual Hustle Award on Thursday afternoon. Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert owns a piece of an NBA record after winning the league's Defensive Player of the Year award on Tuesday for the fourth time. Nuggets' Nikola Jokic wins NBA MVP for 3rd time in 4 seasons
Denver Nuggets superstar Mikola Jokic continued to add to his legacy as one of the best NBA players ever by winning his third Most Valuable Player trophy on Wednesday. Jokic earned the award for the third time in four seasons, succeeding last season's MVP, Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid. Jokic topped Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thuner and Luka Doncicof the Dallas Mavericks, who finished second and third, respectively, in the voting.
Jokic's third MVP victory wasn't close. He garnered 79 first-place votes and a total of 926 points. Gilgeous-Alexander received 15 first-place votes and 640 points. Doncic got four first-place votes and 566 points. The Milwaukee Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo finished fourth, and New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson was fifth in voting.
Jokic is the first center in six decades to win MVP three times in four seasons; Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did it from 1973-74 to 1976-77. Jokic is the ninth three-time MVP in NBA history. In his ninth season, Jokic played 79 games, his most since playing 80 games during the 2018-19 season. He joined Wilt Chamberlain as the only players in NBA history to finish top-five in total points (fifth), rebounds (third) and assists (second) in multiple seasons, according to research by ESPN Stats & Information. Elgin Baylor is the only other player to do so once.

Charles Lee agrees to 4-year deal as Hornets coach, sources say
Boston Celtics lead assistant coach Charles Lee has agreed on a four-year contract to become the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets, sources told ESPN on Thursday morning. Lee, 39, had risen to become one of the league's most accomplished assistant coaches and now lands with new executive president of basketball operations Jeff Peterson in Charlotte to preside over the Hornets' rebuild. Lee and Peterson began their NBA careers together with the Atlanta Hawks. Lee will complete the Celtics' playoff run before moving over to join the Hornets on a full-time basis, sources said.
Lee replaces Steve Clifford, who stepped down at the end of the season to move into a front office role. Charlotte has a chance to be much improved off a 21-61 season with the healthy return of All-Star point guard LaMelo Bell, the potential re-signing of free agent forward Miles Bridges and the rapid development of No. 2 overall pick Brandon Miller. Lee started his coaching career in 2012 at Bucknell, where he had been the Patriot League Player of the Year in his senior season of 2006.

Nets to retire No. 15 jersey of HOF-bound Vince Carter
The Brooklyn Nets are retiring the No. 15 jersey of Vince Carter, the high-flying guard who will be enshrined this year in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The Nets made the video announcement Wednesday that included former backcourtmate Jason Kidd, whose No. 5 jersey is retired by the franchise. Carter played 4½ seasons with the Nets while they were in New Jersey, averaging 23.6 points. He owns their single-season record with 2,070 points in the 2006-07 season.
Carter is third in franchise history in points and is in the Nets' top 10 in numerous other categories. He is the only player in NBA history to play in four decades. The NBA Rookie of the Year in 1999 with the Toronto Raptors, he was dealt by the Raptors to New Jersey on Dec. 17, 2004, and played with the Nets through the 2008-09 season. His last season, 2019-20, was with the Atlanta Hawks. Carter will become the seventh Nets player with a retired jersey. Along with Kidd, the others are Julius Erving, Buck Williams, Drazen Petrovic, "Super" John Williamson and Bill Melchionni.

Sixers' Tyrese Maxey wins NBA Sportsmanship Award
Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey was named the 2023-24 NBA Sportsmanship Award winner on Thursday. Maxey, 23, adds the accompanying Joe Dumars Trophy to his Most Improved Player Award announced last month. Presented since 1995-96, the NBA Sportsmanship Award honors the player who best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court.
Maxey received 91 first-place votes and 2,545 total points. Maxey made his first All-Star team in 2023-24 and averaged 25.9 points, 6.2 assists and 3.7 rebounds in 70 starts in his fourth season with the Sixers. He is the second Philadelphia player to win the Sportsmanship Award after guard Eric Snow (1999-2000).

Warriors star Stephen Curry wins second Magic Johnson Award
Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry is the winner of the 2023-24 Magic Johnson Award, the Professional Basketball Writers Association announced Wednesday. The award is voted on by more than 200 writers and editors who belong to the PBWA and honors the NBA player who excels both on the court and in displaying "cooperation and grace in dealing with the media and fans," according to the organization. It's the second Johnson award for Curry, who also won in 2016. Damian Lillard (2017, 2020) and Shane Battier (2007, 2013) are the other two-time winners.
Curry, 36, has won about every award in his 15 seasons since the Warriors selected him No. 7 overall in the 2009 NBA draft. Among the honors, he's a two-time league MVP, four-time NBA champion, 10-time All-Star, four-time All-NBA first-team selection and a member of the league's 75th Anniversary Team. In the 2023-24 season, Curry averaged 26.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists and was named Clutch Player of the Year.
