Ukraine has retaken Kharkiv. Here’s why that’s such a big deal

The grainy video shows 12 smiling soldiers ducking into a shot around a yellow and blue marker and giving the thumbs-up. “We have made it. We are here, Mr. President,” one of the soldiers in the video says, addressing Ukrainian leader Zelenskyy. The video shared by Ukraine’s Defense Ministry on Sunday is likely evidence of something once thought unthinkable: Russian forces are being driven back to their border, if not over it. This is a big deal. Not only is Kharkiv close to Russia, it is also home to many ethnic Russians and Russian-speakers — the very people the Russian leader promised to “liberate” from what he falsely claims to be Kyiv’s “Nazi” regime.

US accuses Russia of weaponizing food in Ukraine war

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken accused Russia on Thursday of weaponizing food and holding grain for millions of people around the world hostage to help accomplish what its invasion of Ukraine has not -- “to break the spirit of the Ukrainian people.” Since Russia’s invasion on Feb. 24, he said, its naval operations have sought to control access to the northwestern Black Sea and the Sea of Azov and to block Ukrainian ports which the United States assesses to be “a deliberate effort” to block safe passage and shut down shipping.

Russia's war in Ukraine

Russia claims the last Ukrainian fighters have surrendered at the besieged Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol the final holdout of Ukraine's defenses in the otherwise Russian-occupied city. Ukraine is yet to confirm Russia's claims, which, if true, would mark a symbolic military victory for Moscow.

Heavy fighting continues in eastern Ukraine, with a child among seven people injured in the city of Lozova after Russian missiles hit a cultural center on Friday.

US Presideny Joe Biden has signed a $40 billion emergency aid package to Ukraine. The bill was flown to Seoul, South Korea, where Biden is on his first Asia trip as President this weekend.

Russia halted natural gas exports to Finland on Saturday, according to Finnish state-owned energy firm Gasum.

Fuck yeah! Like children in the US don't need that money. Thanks Biden for sending my hard earned tax money to feed race of people I will never meet in life (Russians or Ukrainians). Ukraine must have done something wrong for Russia wanting to kick there ass'es

Russia-Ukraine war: more than 200 bodies found in Mariupol basement; invasion in ‘most active phase’, says Ukraine – live

We will be pausing our live coverage of the war in Ukraine for the next few hours. Before we return, here is a comprehensive rundown of where things currently stand.

  • Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine has entered its most active phase, according to Ukraine’s defence ministry spokesperson, Oleksandr Motuzyanyk. Battles being fought in eastern Ukraine could determine the country’s fate, he added. “The situation on the (eastern) front is extremely difficult because the fate of this country is perhaps being decided (there) right now.”
  • Russian forces have taken control of three Donetsk region towns including Svitlodarsk, according to the regional governor, Pavlo Kyrylenko. Earlier today, it was reported that Russian forces had entered Svitlodarsk and hung up Russian flag over the city administration building.
The bodies of more than 200 people have been discovered in the rubble of a high-rise apartment building in the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, according to a Ukrainian official. Petro Andryushchenko, an adviser to Mariupol’s mayor Vadym Boychenko

I still think that in the end Ukraine will get worn down by Russian forces. We will see if a long (decade plus) guerilla war eventually forces the Russian out but Russia seems to be systematically destroying cities, towns, and civilization infrastructure in order to force civilians out. The only other option seems to be partition for peace.

Henry Kissinger has been advocating the later option.

Russia eliminates age limit for military due to heavy loses in Ukraine. It is worth noting that Russia had a baby bust all through the 1980s which got worse in the 1990s and it has never really recovered. That means Russia is currently running out of people under age 30 and even short on people under age 40. The average life expectancy for men in Russia is only 58. They have a massive HIV and TB infection rate with something like 25% of the population infected as well.

Russia is a country in terminal demographic decline and it knows it. Thus why Putin knew he had to act now or he would lose the ability to act at all. He wants to rebuild the USSR and plug as many of the 9 geographic choke points as he can but three of those are in NATO so he very well might see a war in Eastern Europe.

BTW yesterday a 65 year old retired Russian pilot got shot down flying an SU-25 on a combat mission in Ukraine. The Russians are so stretched for men they are sending in 65 year olds. The elderly pilot died.

Take a tip. This is one of Wilson's spam threads. he won't respond to you directly. He just thinks he's trolling speak freely with it. He doesn't really know or care what's really going on.

Russia-Ukraine war: Nato ‘doing literally nothing’ to stop Russia, says Kyiv – live

Foreign minister praises EU for its ‘revolutionary’ decisions to back Kyiv but says Nato military alliance has been ‘completely sidelined’. It is now nearly midnight in Kyiv. I am Gabrielle Canon, here to take you through the latest updates. Prince Charles spent time in Romania at a Ukrainian refugee center, BBC reports, visiting with civilians who have fled the violence. The visit in Bucharest is the first from a senior royal in the region.
Romania has welcomed nearly a million Ukrainians, and tens of thousands continue to cross into the country. Roughly 6 million people have left Ukraine since the start of the invasion. Prince Charles, who has been vocal about the war calling it a “brutal aggression,” met with families at the center that also provides resources for refugees as they navigate through transitions into a new country. Since Russia invaded neighbouring Ukraine on 24 February, Ukrainian grain shipments from its Black Sea ports have stalled and more than 20m tonnes of grain are stuck in silos, while Moscow says the chilling effect of western sanctions imposed on Russia over the war have disrupted its fertilizer and grain exports. The conflict is fueling a global food crisis with prices for grains, cooking oils, fuel and fertilizer soaring. Russia and Ukraine account for nearly a third of global wheat supplies, while Russia is also a key global fertilizer exporter and Ukraine is a major exporter of corn and sunflower oil.

Ukraine video shows massive Russian explosions: 'What the most horrific war of the 21st century looks like'

The video was shot near Novomykhailivka in the Donegal region of estern Ukraine, which Russian President Vladimir Putin’s army has been focusing on after failing to capture Kyiv. Russia launched its invasion on Feb. 24 and it has lasted 92 days and counting. Ukraine’s military said Thursday in a Facebook post that the "Russian enemy does not stop conducting offensive operations in the Eastern Operational Zone and continues to launch missile and airstrikes on infrastructure facilities in Ukraine. "During the past 24 hours, ten enemy attacks were repulsed in Donetsk and Luhansk, four tanks, two artillery systems, an armored personnel carrier, a car and one unit of special equipment were destroyed," it also said. "Air defense units destroyed five Orlan-10 UAVs."

Stop playing' with Russia, end war: Zelenskiy tells West

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged the West to stop playing around with Russia and impose tougher sanctions on Moscow to end its "senseless war" in Ukraine, adding his country would remain independent, the only question was at what price. Zelenskiy's criticism of the West has mounted in recent days as the European Union moves slowly towards a possible Russian oil embargo and as thousands of Russian forces try to encircle two key eastern cities of Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk. Three months into its invasion of Ukraine, Russia has abandoned its assault on the capital Kyiv and is trying to consolidate control of the industrial eastern Donbas region, where it has backed a separatist revolt since 2014. The catastrophic unfolding events could be still stopped if the world treated the situation in Ukraine as if it were facing the same situation, if the powers that be did not play around with Russia but really pressed to end the war."
