I like Zachary Quinto as Spock. He really projects Nimoy's Spock very well from the little we've seen. I wish I could say the same about the rest of the characters though.
This movie will make or break on how good Kirk is. Especially since he's young the actor is going to have to sell Kirk's pretty much godly status as a legendary Starship captain or at least the seeds of that potential for the movie to work. So far I just don't get a sense of 'That's Kirk!' like I do with Quinto's Spock.
The space battles look predictibly awesome and I'm sure that the movie won't dissapoint when it comes to spectacle. I've been pretty much of the mind that this movie will be at the very least a great action spectacle but less certain that it's going to actually get the gestalt of Trek right.
I am not totally against canon being broken but I don't like canon being broken just for the sake of it. Isn't it preferable to have it link as seamlessly as possible with the rest of the mythos?
I guess I don't want two Star Trek's. The idea of throwing out certain established canon just because Kirk can ride up on his bike to see the Enterpise being built is something I don't like. OK, that is a rather minor example {SEE I'M NOT GOING TO BE A KILLJOY JUST FOR THE SAKE OF IT} but you get the idea.
I hope the movie kills it and is the greatest thing ever. We've all been burned too many times before though so I will continue to reserve judgement. Getting the magnetism between the chracters, especially Kirk, Spock and McCoy is the most vital element so the acting and script are going to have to be great and it's going to have to all click on screen which is harder to get right.
We live in hope.
