Star Trek Discovery

I’d more more annoyed by the fact that it isn’t set in the prime universe if it looked bad, but I think the design work is by and large very good and as bold and playful as the original series’. I guess they could’ve done the same thing if it was set some time after Nemesis, though.
 
I just don't like being lied to. I'd have bitched just the same if the "1980" segment in Guardians Of The Galaxy, Vol 2 had featured a digitally de-aged Kurt Russell driving up to a Chipotle in a 2022 model year Camaro. Don't show us something and tell us it's something totally different. It's insulting. We're not fuckin' feebs, here, we know what they're showing us, and it's not pre-TOS prime timeline Star Trek.

And that'd be fine. Honest to Gods, I'd be 100% fine with that. The "ten years before Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise" marketing is total bullshit. I'm not asking that they produce a pre-TOS setting they obviously don't want to produce. They could have let Axanar do that, frankly.

I'm just saying it'd be nice if they'd stop fucking lying about it and saying they are when they're obviously not.
 
I think you're getting caught up in the details of canon. I don't really care about that, shit happens and times change. It's a TV show, not a religion.

Apart from that, though, it's... I don't know how to classify it yet. It looks nice, visually. The acting is generally fine, and in some cases exceptional-ish. Most of the characters are unlikable, and I guess that's the point, but other shows have pulled that off better. The writing seems disjointed and weird. There are like 20 people listed with producer credits. Too many cooks? Maybe.

At this point I'm just in it for the little weird Easter Eggs they throw in there, like that Gorn skeleton in Lorca's Chamber of Horrors. I'm pretty sure I saw those chicken alien things from "Catspaw" on one of his tables in there, too, but they may have just been regular dead plucked chickens.

Maybe, but so are they when they're selling it that way. That's my point. If they wouldn't sell it as "prime timeline pre-TOS" I wouldn't give a shit. But that is how they're selling it, and yet that's not what they're delivering.

How would you feel if Domino's said they were selling pepperoni pizza, so you bought one, and what showed up at your door was a bucket of live squid?

Same thing. They need to advertise the same thing that's going to show up. Right? I mean, is it too much to ask that they don't sell us shit they have no intention to deliver?
 
Just watched episode 3, and here's a few thoughts...

1.) It's not the dumbest ST ep I've ever seen, but it's close.
2.) In this time period, each command has its own insignia. This bunch is flying the Enterprise insignia... indeed everyone is.
3.) They're not supposed to have such advanced holographic tech.
4.) The ship looks like a 5 year old drew it.
5.) Klingons. Really?
6.) Instawarp. Like any tech, it's never going to go away, and they've just introduced it to the ST universe.

I won't be watching ep 4... I've seen enough.
 
Right. Because what might have got by in a post-Voyager iteration of Star Trek is getting shoved into pre-TOS Star Trek, and we're all being told we're not supposed to notice this shit.

By lazy mother fuckers who either don't know or don't care that what came before TOS actually is established, lazy mother fuckers who either didn't do their homework or are counting on us not having done ours. Or who just think that we're so starved for Star Trek that we'll take whatever shit sandwich they serve up. And they're not wrong there, some clearly are.

But Axanar was as far as I was willing to go. Axanar had some JJTrek shit, but at least they were willing to meet me halfway. Yes, they had the blue neon deflector dishes on their ships, but they had The Cage era uniforms, at least, and at least their ships didn't look like bulge-y, swoop-y models that had gone 5 or 10 minutes in a microwave, then got blue neon slapped all over them. They were at least willing to make some concessions.

Not Discovery, though. The first fucking instant the turbolift doors opened on a bridge set, FUCKIN-WHAMMO! LENS FLARES, BYEEATCH!

And it just never really did sober up from there.
 
Axanar was never going to be anything but a plot to scam donors out of millions, though. Kind of reminded me of that Save Enterprise campaign starring Tim Brazeal and the mysterious Canadian producer, Al Vinci. Remember those guys? That was a hoot.
 
I guess the real monster was man.

I'm not sure, but I think I audibly groaned when the saucer sections started to spin.
 
The scenes with the "Klingons" are just unwatchable. When it was hinted that Discovery was going to make "nods" to actual Star Trek, "some of the more unwatchable parts of the pretty generally unwatchable Star Trek V" wasn't what I was hoping for.
 
The klingons are now just the adults from Peanuts.

Remember when Klingons had personalities and the actors could emote through the makeup?
 
Yeah the Klingons are so boring. I really like the idea of having more scenes from their point of view but there's no point if they're just all these boring monotone people. A good Klingon is one you'd want to party with. I would not want to party with any of these Klingons.

This episode was OK I guess. But the whole tone of the show just doesn't sit right with me - everyone at war and everyone being an asshole to each other just feels so weird. It's like they wanted to make an entire show set in the Yesterday's Enterprise universe but didn't get the idea that that reality was bad and shouldn't actually exist.
 
It's the times --- NASA is treated with indifference now. Exploring isn't exciting anymore, only WAR is! FUCK YEAH!

Which is why there hasn't been a good Star Trek show since 9/11.
 
I remember when they announced Rekha Sharma as a recurring character...I guess two episodes is technically recurring.
