Things you love about Star Trek

In TNG's "A Matter Of Time" , the late Robin Williams was going to play Rasmussen. That would've been interesting. Apparently Robin Williams was too busy filming a movie at the time , "Hook" I think , & had no time to play Rasmussen.

Then TNG's makers hired Matt Frewer to play Rasmussen & I think Matt Frewer did a knockout excellent job as Rasmussen. But suppose Matt Frewer had also not been available to play Rasmussen?

I say , in that event , assuming he'd be available , I suggest hiring & casting Jeff Goldblum as Rasmussen. I could totally see Jeff Goldblum as Rasmussen. I really could. I think Jeff Goldblum's Rasmussen performance would be a grand slam knocked WAY out of the park.

What are YOUR thoughts on Jeff Goldblum having played Rasmussen?

This is slightly off on a tangent (OK, quite a bit) but does anyone else have that thing where you randomly watched a film way back in the day, but you end up thinking about it decades later and remember your surroundings and the day in extra vivid detail for some weird reason? It doesn't even have to be a film, come to think of it. Just a mundane thing you were doing that didn't warrant being stored in the permanent memory banks. Like your brain glitched and decided to make this a bigger memory than it ever had any reason to be and absorbs all the details of the surrounding moments and stores them forever, and now it's some prominent memory for the rest of your life for absolutely no fucking reason at all?

I have that with the 1990 Matt Frewer film, Short Time. A perfectly competent comedy that while pretty decent is also quite unremarkable. I must have watched it only a few years after it came out and remember the rainy Sunday in vivid detail. It wasn't even a Blockbuster rental. It was just on TV. I remember where I was sitting, what I was eating and drinking, etc (Lilt and Frazzles - only the healthiest diet for my young growing frame) like it was yesterday. I don't remember the exact year, though I'm guessing 94/95. The memory is stuck on the immediate surroundings more than the more macro aspect of the time period.

Anyway, that's the story. Whenever I see his name, I remember it. Writing this all out isn't going to help.

YES. If ever there was a role for Jeff Goldblum in Trek, that would have been a good one.

Anyone who doesn't watch RuPaul's Drag Race should check out the episode where Jeff was a guest judge. It's amazing. Season 12, Episode 9, "Choices 2020" -- the queens are running for President and have a debate. Goldblum and Rachel Bloom (My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) are moderators and guest judges.

To drag things further off, I will say that is my attempt at time travel and/or immortality. I try to put myself back to an experience to the level that it is essentially happening again. Haven't had real success but I've got a few locations that, if I squint just right, are close. A bit like a low-rent "Quantum Leap": I can only travel in time to events that happened during my own lifetime--to me."

Since "Quantum Leap" starred Captain Archer and this is basically my attempt to evolve into a higher, disembodied glow-y energy being, I guess it is somewhat relevant to 'Trek. You gotta wonder, on them old '60s sci-fi TV shows, how often the producers were like "well, we're behind budget, better write an episode where the aliens are invisible."
