Hot board: Duke, UNC making moves for top prospects
In the 2020 class, players took official visits very early in the fall and then hit some of the bigger programs for Midnight Madness festivities.


Top-5 center Mark Williams announces commitment to Duke
Williams chose Mike Krzyzewski's program over a final three that also included Michigan and UCLA. He took official visits to all three schools, starting with UCLA back in August and finishing up with a trip to Duke last weekend. Williams is ranked as the No. 30 player overall in the 2020 class but slots in as the No. 5 center in the ESPN 100.

No. 9 Louisville women pull away from Western Kentucky 75-56
Dana Evans had 19 points, Elizabeth Balogun and Elizabeth Dixon combined for 25 points and 17 rebounds in their debuts.

Ekhomu, Gillespie lead No. 13 FSU women to 88-36 win.
Nicki Ekhomu scored 18 points. Gillespie had 12 points and 10 rebounds for her 14th career double-double and reserves Morgan Jones had 14 points, while River Baldwin scored 13 for the Seminoles.

Freshmen help No. 16 Notre Dame women beat Fordham 60-55
Freshmen Sam Brunelle and Anaya Peoples scored in double figures in their Notre Dame debut. Brunelle scored 14 points, Peoples had 11 and Destinee Walker 10 in the 1,000th victory for the Notre Dame program.

No. 21 Syracuse women rally to beat Ohio 66-54
Kiara Lewis scored 16 points and Gabrielle Cooper and Taleah Washington had 10 each as No. 21 Syracuse rallied from a 14-point first-quarter deficit.

Freshman Anthony scores 34 points, No. 9 UNC beats Irish
Cole Anthony set the school record for scoring by a freshman in his debut, finishing with 34 points and 11 rebounds. The Atlantic Coast Conference preseason freshman of the year broke Rashad McCants' 17-year-old scoring record by a freshman in his first game and finished 12 of 24 from the field with six 3-pointers.

No. 11 Virginia 48, Syracuse 34
Virginia picked up right where it left off in April -- showcasing its Pack-Line defense in impressive fashion. Mamadi Diakite scored 12 points, Jay Huff added 11 points and 12 rebounds.


Women
Frosh lead No. 14 NC State past NC A&T 80-44
Boyd scored 18 points on 5-of-7 shooting, plus 8-of-9 shooting from the foul line, and grabbed 11 rebounds. Kayla Jones also had 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and all 11 Wolfpack players scored.
 
Roy Williams, C.B. McGrath reunite as No.9 North Carolina visits UNC Wilmington
Williams offered McGrath a walk-on position on the Kansas basketball team in 1994 when he was the head coach of the Jayhawks. For the next 22 years, McGrath was by Williams' side as a player and an assistant coach at both Kansas and North Carolina. C.B. McGrath is in his third season as head coach with the UNCW Seahawks. The Tar Heels took a 97-69 win over UNC Wilmington last season in Chapel Hill, and they have won all four games in the series.

Kamilla Cardoso becomes Syracuse's third top-100 commit
The No. 5 prospect in the espnW HoopGurlz Class of 2020 Cardoso, a 6-foot-6 post player, had also been considering Mississippi State, Ohio State and South Carolina.

Notre Dame center Mikayla Vaughn out with knee injury
No. 16 Notre Dame will be without 6-foot-3 junior center Mikayla Vaughn for four to six weeks because of a right knee sprain.

Syracuse G Tiana Mangakahia recovering from surgery
Mangakahia as diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in June and has been undergoing treatment.

Jones leads No. 4 Duke past Colorado State 89-55
Tre Jones had 15 points and eight assists. Alex O'Connell had 14 points while three freshmen also reached double figures, Cassius Stanley led the way with 19 points, Vernon Carey had 11 before fouling out and Wendell Moore Jr. finished with 10, for the Blue Devils (2-0).

Anthony, Pierce help No. 9 UNC beat UNC Wilmington 78-62
Freshman star Cole Anthony had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Graduate transfer Justin Pierce had 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Women
U.S. women's hoops team to face UConn, Louisville to prep for Olympics
The U.S. women's basketball team has added exhibition games at UConn on Jan. 27 and Louisville on Feb. 2 as part of its preparation for the 2020 Summer Olympics.

There are eight "core" players on the American squad: Seattle's Sue Bird, Phoenix's Diana Taurasi, Washington's Elena Delle Donne, Dallas' Skylar Diggins-Smith, Minnesota's Sylvia Fowles, Los Angeles' Chelsea Gray and Nneka Ogwumike, and Las Vegas' A'ja Wilson.
