Novak Djokovic tops Daniil Medvedev to win US Open, 24th major

It was the latest record-setting milestone for Djokovic, who was already atop the men's Slam list and has now moved one major singles title ahead of Serena Williams to become the first player to win 24 in the Open era. Court also collected a total of 24, but 13 of those came before professionals were admitted to the Slam events. Djokovic has now won titles at exactly one third of the majors he has played in (24 titles in 72 major appearances). He has reached the final in exactly half (36) of the Slams in which he has competed. For the third time in his career, Djokovic made it to the finals of all four majors, adding to his victories at the Australian Open in January and French Open in June.

Australian racing investigation finds decades of abuse

A review of the thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing industry in Australia's state of Victoria has detailed multiple allegations of physical and sexual abuse over a period of decades, with victims including children as young as 12. Until the 1990s, it was common practice in Australia for child apprentice jockeys to be indentured to stables, with trainers their legal guardians. The independent report into the racing industry's victim support and complaint processes said a "culture of silence" had contributed to incidents of abuse being left unchecked. The report covered historical and current incidents dating back to the 1970s, drawing from direct, in-person accounts from 185 people who work or previously worked in the industry. "The abuse involves rape, other forms of sexual and physical assault, humiliating initiation practices, ritualised violence, grooming and harassment, including in recent years," the report released on Wednesday said. "Some of this abuse was perpetrated against children as young as 12." The review said a number of the cases stemmed from the 1970s to the 1990s, when there was no system in place to safeguard and protect minors or vulnerable people.

Dustin Johnson says defection to LIV cost him Ryder Cup spot

Dustin Johnson said he would have been selected to this year's United States Ryder Cup team had he not defected to LIV Golf. Johnson, a two-time major champion, instead finds himself a spectator despite being a part of five previous American teams. The Ryder Cup will be contested at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club near Rome, starting Sept. 29. Johnson, who joined the Saudi-funded LIV Golf circuit in June 2022, was not selected by U.S. captain Zach Johnson despite recording five top-10 finishes this season. Johnson, 39, didn't fare well in the majors, however, with his T10 finish at the U.S. Open being the best of the lot. He tied for 48th at the Masters, tied for 55th at the PGA Championship and missed the cut at The Open Championship.

This year's tournament will be held at the Stan Sheriff Center on the campus of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Honolulu was the site of the game that sparked the creation of the Maui Invitational -- Chaminade's historic upset of No. 1 Virginia and Ralph Sampson in 1982.

The Maui Invitational should be this season's premier nonconference tournament, with a field headlined by Kansas, ranked No. 1 in ESPN's latest Way-Too-Early Top 25, No. 3 Purdue, No. 7 Gonzaga, No. 8 Tennessee and No. 10 Marquette. UCLA, Syracuse and Chaminade round out this year's eight-team field.
