The top international men's college basketball freshmen to know for 2023-24

The impact of international prospects on American basketball isn't a new phenomenon. One need look no further than last season's All-NBA first team, which featured four players born outside the United States -- a group that didn't include two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic. Or the last five NBA MVP awards, all won by players born outside the United States. Or France native Victor Wembanyama, the most recent No. 1 NBA draft pick. International players have had an influence on the NBA dating back to the 1980s, when Hakeem Olajuwon (Nigeria) and Patrick Ewing (Jamaica) were selected No. 1 in back-to-back drafts (1984 and '85) and then went on to dominate the league for years.

Kansas basketball on probation as violations degraded
As part of Wednesday's ruling, the Jayhawks were placed on a three-year probation and will have to vacate its 2018 Final Four appearance and wins from that season due to Silvio de Sousa's participation. The program, however, was not given a postseason ban and Self and assistant coach Kurtis Townsend will face no further suspension.

Kansas basketball gets out of jail free, but falsehoods are there for all to see

The University of Kansas is the top ranked men’s basketball team going into the 2023-24 season. On Wednesday, the powers that control the NCAA orchestrated a decision saying that Kansas, its athletic department, and coach Bill Self are not guilty of any major violations stemming from that FBI investigation. Instead of a postseason ban, Kansas basketball gets a finger-wag and a stern look. Self-dealing and corruption in big-time college sports remain undefeated.

Kentucky's John Calipari proposes transfer rule with no penalty

As the transfer portal continues to influence college basketball, Kentucky coach John Calipari suggests tightening player eligibility. At an SEC basketball preview event on Wednesday, Calipari said he would allot players five years to play four seasons -- without exception. "If you want to transfer without penalty," he said, "you can one time. If you had any other issues -- family stuff, mental health -- you take the year off to get yourself together and then you play. But you have five years." NCAA waivers, combined with the blanket extra year of eligibility granted as a result of the COVID-19 in 2020, has resulted in an abundance of sixth- and seventh-year seniors. "We don't want to have 28-year-olds playing against 18-year-olds," Calipari said. "In high school, you get so many semesters and you're done. You can't have a 15-year-old playing against a 21-year-old. It's the same thing."

NCAA focused on employment status of athletes at Senate hearing

At a Senate hearing Tuesday, NCAA president Charlie Baker shifted the focus of college sports' needs toward the possibility of athletes being deemed employees of their schools and away from federal legislation to regulate how they can be compensated for their fame. Baker, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick were among the witnesses appearing in front of the Judiciary Committee, the 10th hearing on college sports to be held on Capitol Hill since 2020. Also appearing were former Florida gymnast Trinity Thomas; Walker Jones, who runs the booster-funded collective that supports University of Mississippi athletes; Saint Joseph's athletic director Jill Bodensteiner; and Ramogi Huma, a longtime advocate for college athletes.

Tyson Fury says he'll fight for a long time after Ngannou, Usyk

Tyson Fury briefly retired last year, a hiatus that lasted all of four months before he scheduled a December trilogy fight with Derek Chisora. Fury is set to meet former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou on Oct. 28 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (2 p.m. ET, ESPN+ PPV), and afterward is already contractually committed for an undisputed heavyweight championship fight with Oleksandr Usyk. Fury (33-0-1, 24 KOs) told ESPN on Thursday that he won't stop fighting anytime soon after that. Fury, nicknamed "The Gypsy King," is already an all-time great heavyweight but can greatly enhance his legacy with a pair of victories over Usyk, who is three spots ahead of Fury on ESPN's pound-for-pound list at No. 3. Fury's WBC heavyweight title won't be on the line in his 10-round bout with Ngannou and it won't count on their records. But Fury must emerge without injury if he's going to fight Usyk less than two months later.
