Michigan passes Georgia as betting favorite to win CFP title

Michigan is the new consensus betting favorite to win the College Football Playoff and also boasts the Heisman Trophy favorite at sportsbooks around the nation. The Wolverines moved ahead of Georgia in the national championship odds over the weekend. They're +220 at Caesars Sportsbook, followed by the two-time defending champion Bulldogs at +280. It's the first time this season a team other than Georgia has been the favorite, and the first time in the playoff era that Michigan has been the national title favorite. Georgia had been the national title favorite since November and began this season with a sizable lead over Michigan in the title odds. But the loss of star tight end Brock Bowers and a few sluggish performances by the Bulldogs helped the Wolverines narrow the gap.

Edey is the second straight AP player of the year to return for another season, following Kentucky's Oscar Tshiebwe in 2021-22.

NASCAR Playoff 2023: Postseason format, standings, schedule for NASCAR race to the championship
A driver can advance one of two ways: If they win a race, they automatically advance to the next round of the playoffs. Alternatively, they can also make it into the next round on points so long as they are above the cutoff line at the end of each respective three-race round. The four drivers below the cutoff line at the end of each round are eliminated from the playoffs and eliminated from championship contention. After each round, every remaining driver's points totals are reset, with playoff points continuing to determine seeding.

Grand National to reduce field, soften fences for safety

The Grand National is implementing a series of significant changes, taking effect next year, in an effort to make the world's most famous steeplechase safer for horses and jockeys. They include reducing the field from 40 horses -- the size since 1984 -- to 34, softening the fences by using foam and rubber toe boards, and moving the first fence closer to the start to stop horses building up too much speed. The race will also start earlier in the day, so the course stays as soft as possible, and the horses will set off from a standing start. Sixteen horses have died in the Grand National since the turn of the century. One horse, Hill Sixteen, was put down after a heavy fall at the first fence of this year's race, becoming the third horse to die at the three-day festival in April.

Masters unlikely to change qualifying criteria for LIV golfers

LIV Golf League players who were hoping the major championships would change criteria to make it easier for them to qualify for those fields probably aren't going to get their wish when it comes to the Masters. Augusta National Golf Club chairman Fred Ridley told reporters in Australia on Thursday that he didn't anticipate the club making any changes to its criteria for the 2024 Masters, which will be played April 11-14. The Masters announced in April that it would invite the NCAA individual champion and winners of events from the PGA Tour's fall schedule that award a full allotment of points in 2024. It also tweaked the language of an exemption for PGA Tour members who qualify for the season-ending Tour Championship.

No NIT automatic bids for regular-season conference champs

Regular-season conference champions are no longer guaranteed spots in the National Invitation Tournament. The NIT board of managers tweaked its qualifying rules for its postseason tournament Friday, saying regular-season champs who do not win their conference tournament and are not otherwise selected to the NCAA tournament will not receive an automatic bid to the NIT. Instead, the NIT will guarantee two teams -- based on the NET rankings -- from each of major six conferences, the Atlantic Coast, the Big East, the Big Ten, the Big 12, the Pac-12 and the Southeastern. The top two teams in the NET rankings not qualifying for the NCAA tournament from each conference, regardless of win-loss record, will be selected. Additionally, the 12 teams automatically selected will be guaranteed the opportunity to host a game in the first round of the NIT.
