WBA joins WBC in adding 18th weight class with super cruiserweight

The WBA has joined the WBC with an 18th weight class following Friday's introduction of a super cruiserweight division for boxers between 200 and 224 pounds. The WBC created the bridgerweight division (190 to 224 pounds) in 2020 and was met with harsh criticism from a boxing industry that was already littered with titles from four organizations across 17 weight classes. The IBF and WBO have held off on adding the 18th division, but now the WBA, too, has a weight class between cruiserweight (200 pounds) and heavyweight. Heavyweight is still an unlimited class above 200 pounds in the eyes of the IBF and WBO.

The bridgerweight division has been anything but a success thus far, with just two title fights since its inception. The WBC bridgerweight champion is Lukasz Rozanski. So-called undersized heavyweights such as Deontay Wilder and Oleksandr Usyk, the former undisputed cruiserweight champion, opted to remain at heavyweight, boxing's glamour division. The cruiserweight division, meanwhile, is a nonentity in the U.S., and is mostly filled with European fighters. "The creation of this new weight will mainly help to avoid bouts in which the fighters enter the ring with excessive weight differences, as tends to happen at heavyweight occasionally.

Texas, Oklahoma rivalry game staying at Cotton Bowl through 2036

Texas and Oklahoma have agreed to extend their historic rivalry game at the Cotton Bowl through 2036, the two schools announced Wednesday. As part of the deal, the city of Dallas has agreed to an estimated $140 million renovation of the aging stadium, which opened in 1930. The Longhorns and Sooners first met at a neutral site at the State Fair of Texas in 1929 and have played every game in the Cotton Bowl since it opened the next year. The rivalry game began in 1900 and the two teams played for the 119th time this season. In recent years, as teams around the country have played at neutral sites in modern NFL stadiums, there have been questions if Texas and Oklahoma should consider a similar arrangement. But both schools have continuously stated they hoped to remain at the Cotton Bowl in the middle of the state fair, one of the most unique settings in college football.

Athletes sue NCAA, Power 5 for not getting paid

The NCAA added a new legal challenge to its already cumbersome caseload Thursday, as a trio of college athletes filed suit against the association and its five most powerful conferences claiming that rules that prohibit schools from paying their athletes violate antitrust law. "It's time for the NCAA to recognize that the rules prohibiting athletes from sharing in the massive revenues we help to generate are harming all college athletes," Carter said in a statement provided by his lawyers. "There are hundreds of people involved in NCAA sports but the only ones who cannot be paid are the athletes; I'm proud to stand up for all college athletes to correct that injustice."

The lawsuit comes just two days after NCAA president Charlie Baker announced a new proposal that would allow schools to sign NIL deals directly with their athletes and share significant amounts of money for their players through a "enhanced educational trust fund." Baker's proposal stops short of allowing schools to pay athletes specifically for their athletic performance. He said during an interview at the Sports Business Journal's Intercollegiate Athletics Forum this week that his plan would not turn athletes into employees of their school. Baker and other leaders in college sports have been asking Congress to create a federal law that would prevent athletes from filing antitrust lawsuits like the case filed this week.

NCAA volleyball tournament: Top storylines from each region

It's the biggest day of women's college volleyball all year: eight matches between the 16 teams still vying for the national championship. Regional semifinal day is a smorgasbord of talent stretching across the country. It starts Thursday at noon ET, and by early Friday morning we'll know which programs are one step away from the national semifinals in Tampa, Florida. With the conference realignments next season, including the demise of the Pac-12, volleyball like every other sport will look notably different. But for one more NCAA tournament, we have volleyball's two traditional "power" conferences -- the Pac-12 and the Big Ten -- with four teams from each still alive. Two rising powers, the ACC and SEC, have three teams each. The Big 12 and the Big East have one each. Six of the teams remaining have won the NCAA title, led by nine-time champion Stanford. Three of the regional semifinal matches will pit conference foes: Kentucky vs. Arkansas, Wisconsin vs. Penn State, and Stanford vs. Arizona State.
