Evander Holyfield returning to ring for exhibition fight vs. Kevin McBride on June 5
Holyfield, 58, joins the trend of retired boxers cashing in on exhibition bouts. The highest-profile exhibition bout featured Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. on a Triller card in November 2020 that reportedly sold 1.6 million pay-per-views.

North Carolina Tar Heels' 5-year deal with men's hoops coach Hubert Davis averages $2M annually

The North Carolina Tar Heels five-year deal with new men's basketball coach Hubert Davis will pay an average of $2 million annually in salary, compensation from apparel and multimedia deals, and an expense allowance. The school has released terms for Davis, a former Tar Heels player under Dean Smith who had spent the past nine seasons as an assistant to Hall of Fame coach Roy Williams before becoming his successor. Davis, who played a dozen years in the NBA, is a first-time college head coach.

Which college football transfers will make an impact in 2021?

There was a significant increase in the number of college football players entering the transfer portal this offseason. More than ever, coaches used the portal as part of their recruiting strategy to help fill holes on the roster, in part because the NCAA granted every student-athlete an extra year of eligibility amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The created recruiting dead period that was enacted March, 2020, also resulted in fewer opportunities to evaluate high school recruits. In turn, college football programs are looking at transfers to find more experienced and game-ready players.

Eight countries advance to 2022 qualifying in Billie Jean King Cup

Britain, Canada, Italy and Ukraine were among the eight countries that reached the qualifying round of the 2022 Billie Jean King Cup with victories Saturday. These were the first matches in the women's tennis team competition since its name was changed from Fed Cup last year. Also advancing were Kazakhstan, Latvia, Netherlands and Poland. Britain beat Mexico 3-1, Canada defeated Serbia 4-0, Italy eliminated Romania 3-1 and Ukraine shut out Japan 4-0. Kazakhstan got past Argentina 3-2, Latvia beat India 3-1, Netherlands edged China 3-2 and Poland defeated Brazil 3-2.

ITF moves rankings cutoff for Olympic tennis to June 14

The WTA and ATP rankings of June 14 will be used to determine which tennis players earn direct entry into the Tokyo Olympics for singles and doubles, a delay of a week to match the change in dates for the French Open. The ITF announced Thursday that its board of directors had approved the move from June 7. The French tennis federation pushed back the start of its Grand Slam tournament from May 23 to May 30 because of rising COVID-19 cases in the country. The singles finals are now scheduled for June 12-13. After countries let the ITF know which eligible players plan to enter singles and nominate pairs for women's and men's doubles, the full entry lists will be released by the end of June. Mixed doubles teams will be established once players arrive in Japan.The tennis competition during the pandemic-postponed Summer Games is to run from July 24 to Aug. 1.
There are 64-player draws in women's and men's singles, 32 pairs in women's and men's doubles and 16 teams in mixed doubles. Each country can have up to six women and six men, with as many as four in singles and four in doubles for each gender; no country can have more than two pairings in mixed doubles.
