Blake James out as athletic director of Miami Hurricanes

Miami athletic director Blake James is out with the school, two days after the Hurricanes' football team lost at Florida State. The school, which described James' departure as a mutual agreement to part ways, said in a statement that a national search for the next AD would begin immediately. Football -- the biggest part of Miami's athletic brand -- has struggled again this season. Miami is 19-15 in coach Manny Diaz's three seasons, including 5-5 this season. The Hurricanes wasted an eight-point lead in the final minutes of a 31-28 loss to Florida State on Saturday. James was part of the decision-making group that hired Diaz in 2018, luring him away from a job at Temple that he'd held for less than a month. Diaz had been Miami's defensive coordinator under Mark Richt, and when Richt resigned on Dec. 30, 2018, the Hurricanes needed only a few hours before completing a deal with Diaz. James accepted the Miami job in February 2013, with the Hurricanes still in the throes of the NCAA investigation into the actions of rogue former booster Nevin Shapiro. The Hurricanes got through scholarship limitations and probation that followed the Shapiro decision, and James helped the school complete a number of facilities projects -- a baseball player development center, an indoor practice facility for football, a nutrition center and many more.

Michigan Wolverines men's basketball coach Juwan Howard agrees to new 5-year contract

Michigan coach Juwan Howard has agreed to a new five-year contract through the 2025-26 season, the school announced Tuesday. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately available. Last season, Howard won the Henry Iba Award, given annually to the nation's best college basketball coach, and earned AP Coach of the Year honors. South Carolina Gamecocks, UConn Huskies top AP Top 25 women's college basketball poll.

After an impressive win, Indiana has vaulted up to its best ranking ever: No. 4 in the AP Top 25 women's basketball poll. The veteran Hoosiers had their best ranking ever at No. 8 in the preseason Top 25, and then had a week that included a rout of then-No. 13 Kentucky 88-67. Indiana returned all five starters from last season's team that went to the Elite Eight and had its sixth consecutive 20-win season. South Carolina remained the top team in the poll, receiving 25 first-place votes from a national media panel. The Gamecocks had an impressive nine-point win at No. 5 NC State to tip off the season. The Gamecocks were followed by UConn, which garnered the five other No. 1 votes, and Maryland. All five of the top teams will head to The Bahamas over the next two weeks to play in two tournaments. There is the potential for a 1-2 matchup between the Gamecocks and Huskies if both teams win their first two games in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament.

Russian tennis player Teymuraz Gabashvili accepts 20-month doping ban

Russian tennis player Teymuraz Gabashvilli has accepted a 20-month ban after failing a doping test, the International Tennis Federation said Friday. Gabashvili tested positive at a Challenger-level tournament in Kazakhstan in June for the diuretic furosemide, which has legitimate medical uses but is banned in sports because it can be used to mask the presence of other substances. The ruling says Gabashvili used furosemide only once "and would not have obtained any competitive advantage from that use in Competitions taking place after that date." Gabashvili, who is 36, reached a career-high ranking of 43rd in 2016 and was briefly the top-ranked men's player from Russia. His best result at a Grand Slam event was reaching the fourth round at the French Open in 2010 and 2015. His current ranking is 270th.

Canelo Alvarez gets WBC's approval to fight Ilunga Junior Makabu for cruiserweight title

Canelo Alvarez could chase a title in a fifth weight class. At the WBC Convention on Wednesday in Mexico City, the organization approved the request of Canelo's trainer and manager, Eddy Reynoso, to have Alvarez challenge Ilunga Junior Makabu for the cruiserweight championship. Alvarez, ESPN's No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer, became undisputed champion at 168 pounds earlier this month with an 11th-round TKO of Caleb Plant. A win over Makabu would make Canelo (57-1-2, 39 KOs) a five-division champion. Alvarez has never competed at cruiserweight, so Reynoso needed to petition the WBC to order the title fight. Now that the fight has been approved, negotiations can begin; and if no deal is struck, a purse bid will be ordered. The cruiserweight limit is 200 pounds, but the WBC recently introduced an 18th weight class -- bridgerweight -- with a limit of 224 pounds. In a corresponding move, the Mexico-based organization is reducing the cruiserweight limit to 190 pounds, the same weight when the division was introduced in 1979, before it was increased by 10 pounds in 2004.
