Are we going to mention Jimmy Kimmel?

I will be sleeping through Jimmy's rise from the dead. (srsly, I'm out by 10:30)

He'll definitely have a ratings bump from this kerfuffle. Probably won't last long, because late night tv is dead. I don't know why they don't cancel all of them, and show reruns or something in that time slot. Maybe it is nostalgia for the old days. Johnny Carson reruns come on one of the ota channels, and I try to watch it sometimes. It was nearly as cheesy as the modern shows, but it didn't have to compete with the internet (or cable and streaming), and the times were different. He did make fun of politicians, but he spread the jokes around without worrying about pissing off one side or the other. Back then we didn't expect tv show hosts and comedians to wear their political affiliation at all times, they could just make jokes about the silly shit.

The host of The Apprentice is happy.

My very favorite Johnny Carson episodes were when Jim Fowler came on with animals.

It will be really good news if tonight's show is highly rated, because a quarter of ABC's local stations still won't be airing the show, because they are owned by Trump-loving companies. So if he still manages record ratings despite being dark in 25% of the country, that would be a real statement.

People can't watch it here even if they wanted too.

Conan was the only modern host with the right balance. I am too young (don't get to say that very often) for Carson.
Agreed with Conan. But you're never too young or old for Carson. It's never to late to study the greats.

False: Kimmel is also streamed next-day on Hulu (depending on whether or not one has cancelled their subscription after this) and clips of his show, including the monologue, are always uploaded to YouTube. You pretty much have to actively not want to watch, to not be able to see this.

Youtube?

Cool. That means it's subject to being ratioed and repeatedly reported for hate speech. :D

Anyone caught the political shift on YT lately? Like... today?

You can stream it next day on Hulu or Disney+ unless you already canceled those in a huff after Jimmy got taken off the air in the first place...

Which is exactly what I said, minus the Disney+ part...

The sweet spot was around the second season or so, up until Andy left. Classic television.

A few years back, one of those alternate digitial stations was showing Johnny Carson reruns and they're so trippy. By the time I was a young adult, the format was baked in: Monologue, guest pitching something, comedy segment, guest pitching something/or maybe some slice of life folksy guest with the world's largest ball of twine or something, musical guest. The earlier Carson shows, they'd just have Buddy Hackett on and talk about what it was like to be in WWII for 10 minutes. He wasn't pitching anything, they just needed a guest at the last minute and were able to get him. Had one with a very young George Carlin, doing the hippy-dippy weatherman.

DISH currently has a Johnny Carson channel on their expanded digital presence. A 24 hour channel with full episodes. They also have Carol Burnett and Ed Sullivan if you want to go on a 60's-70's Rabbit Hole.

Me personally, I bounce between the BBC Sci-Fi channel when they're showing Red Dwarf, The Top Gear Channel, and the BBC Game Shows channel.
