BAG O' BOOKS

OK. I'm slipping a non-sci-fi in to cleanse my palette as it were...it's this little book about Kublai Kahn's failed attempt to conquer Japan...a bit of history I missed....

I have to warn you... Ilium is great, I loved it, but Olympos is disappointing. It's just dragging on and on. Simmons describes everything in massive detail, leaves nothing to the imagination, and he repeats descriptions of the same people over and over. TEDIOUS :rwmad:

i just finished blindsight, i think sci-fi lovers will dig it. a crew of zombies captained by a vampire fly to the Oort clould to confront an alien presence that may be here to destroy us all...

Oh, I like PKD. I can't remember if I've read that one or not. He was really crazy, I think he burned out on acid.

I just started the Uplift series by David Brin.

FINALLY finished Ilium and Olympos - surprised to find I liked Olympos better - the story lines got resolved and I now knew who the hell all the players were...Theseus son of Bumacrrakolis - SRSLY!
can't say I loved these books as much as Gibson's, but there were some clever little touches with the "play within the play within the play" theme...

lol.. Olympos was so hard for me to like because Simmons repeated himself REPEATEDLY. I loved the story and especially the moravecs.

yeah, the moravecs rocked!

right near the very end of Olympos:
so were Odysseus/Noman and whatshername destroyed as well when the teenagers making out in the car were vaporized by the nuclear wave, or did they just hop to another Earth dimension? I wasn't sure with that ambiguous wording.

Well, that's one of the stupid things about the book. I think the teenagers were Odysseus and Circe, and they were committing suicide. I could be wrong, maybe they're screwing through all the big disasters, lol.

yeah! I wondered about that. pretty LULWUT? , IMHO.
why the hell would they commit suicide when they can travel through all those dimensions? - but the way he thought that was 'exactly how she would plan it' made me wonder, "are they going out with a big (pardon the expression) bang?!"

And in your opinion, was Prospero a bad guy or a good guy???!And WTF was he? One of the gods?

I was under the impression that the teenagers scene was just one more instance of those two and then they keep moving forward through time.

Agree it was pretty-stupid though.

I actually preferred Olympos b/c I enjoyed the earthbound / Calibani-fighting story better than the other one. The first time a dinosaur shows up, wow that was cool.

I just started The Atrocity Archives (Charles Stross). The print is big, and I love Stross, so I should zip right through this one. I don't know what I want to read next, I was going to read the Uplift series, but Sundiver was so lame I'm thinking of putting it off for a while. Summer is almost here, so I will be reading Dune again soon. I also have a big stack of books my dad sent me, and I know a few of them will be really crappy, lol. He reads anything! OH.. I know, I've been meaning to read The Left Hand of Darkness again, do you have a copy? I know there are concepts in that book I skimmed over the first time.

OK - it's been a million years since I read it so I'll go up in the attic and find my copy - I seem to vaguely recall I liked it a lot!
