Retired Luke Kuechly considering job as Panthers scout
Kuechly, 29, surprisingly retired in January, saying he wasn't sure if he could play as "fast, physical and strong'' as he did during his eight NFL seasons that included seven Pro Bowl selections and the league's Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2013. The ninth pick of the 2012 draft out of Boston College, Kuechly had 1,092 tackles from 2012 to '19 -- the most in the NFL in that span.

Retired linebacker Luke Kuechly officially announced he is returning to the Panthers as a pro scout. So for the first time in a long time his job won't include playing football. ‘'My family ran an auto parts company. That was my last job when I was in high school. I worked in the warehouse as a warehouse picker," Kuechly told the team.

Defensive end Stephen Weatherly on the importance of the Panthers having an in-house mental health clinician during these times of the coronavirus pandemic and unrest over social injustice since the murder of George Floyd: “It's everything. Mental health, everyone knows what's between the years affects you in all sorts of ways. I can't go out there and do my best to help bring a championship to this city, this team, this organization if my head isn't on right.''

Panthers defensive end Stephen Weatherly, who was with the Minnesota Vikings from 2016-2019, on what he saw of community relations and the police in Minneapolis: “It was strained. And a lot of past problems that weren't addressed.'' One of the goals Weatherly and Carolina's Player Impact Committee has is to improve relations between the police and community in Charlotte and the Carolinas.

The story of Panthers defensive end Efe Obada has been well documented. He shared his thoughts on what is happening in America on Instagram: "I am an immigrant born in Nigeria, raised in England and chasing the American dream. I am thankful to the Panthers for treating me everyday like I matter. Despite being an immigrant, or an African, or a black man. I walk into that facility everyday and I feel at home, I feel equal, I feel respected and most importantly I feel like I matter.''

The Panthers released tight end Seth DeValve today citing a non-football injury, a league source told ESPN's Field Yates. DeValve was a fourth-round pick out of Princeton by the Cleveland Browns in 2016. He was with Jacksonville last year and signed by Carolina in March. While with Cleveland in 2017, DeValve became the first white player to kneel during the national anthem to protest social injustice.

Matt Rhule had hoped the Panthers would practice against the Ravens before their preseason game, but that won't happen now because the NFL sent a memo out on Tuesday saying there would be no joint practices. He has a lot of respect for John Harbaugh and the physicality of his team.

Matt Rhule on retired MLB Luke Kuechly looking at a return to the Panthers as a pro scout: “I've had a great relationship with Luke. He's my neighbor. It's great if it works out, if it's what he wants to do. . . . I certainly hope it works out. He's a great, great person. Forget who he was as a player. He's got to figure out what's right for him. Since the first day, my advice has always been do what's right for you.''

Panthers TE Chris Manhertz, who spent time in New Orleans with Drew Brees, on Brees' controversial comments and follow up apology: “I'm glad that he issued an apology. It takes somebody of character to acknowledge they're wrong and messed up in a way. Everybody has their own perspective so I can't really take that away from him.''

Panthers linebacker Andre Smith said team owner David Tepper called him and other teammates who protested on Monday to thank them for doing their part in the movement for social injustice. He said in 2018 when the Panthers signed Eric Reid he was concerned over what the implications might be if he expressed himself, so Tepper's call meant a

Retired Carolina Panthers middle linebacker Luke Kuechly officially announced Thursday he is returning to the team as a pro scout. ''My family ran an auto parts company. Former Panthers owner Jerry Richardson was not consulted or informed that his statue outside BOA Stadium was being removed today. ‘'Mr. Richardson has made no public comments about the Panthers or the NFL since the sale of the team and doesn't plan to do so now as a private citizen,'' a spokesperson said. ‘'He has worked to treat all people fairly in his business and personal lives and, like many other Americans, is troubled by recent events in Minneapolis, Charlotte, and around the country.'

Panthers safety Tre Boston appreciates new owner David Tepper allowing players to express themselves during these times of racial unrest. It wasn't always that way under former owner Jerry Richardson. “When we're talking I don't feel like I'm talking to the owner,'' Boston said of Tepper. "I feel like I'm talking to my friend. I feel like I am talking to somebody I trust.''

Panthers safety Tre Boston discusses on zoom that with the climate today and 2017 allegations of racial and social misconduct directed at former team owner Jerry Richardson that “it's best for the whole community'' to remove the Richardson statue as is being done today. “That was something in the direction of where the Carolina [Panthers] stand we would like to move forward.''

The Panthers are moving the statue of former team owner and founder Jerry Richardson to an undisclosed place. ‘'We were aware of the most recent conversation surrounding the Jerry Richardson statue and are concerned there may be attempts to take it down. We are moving the statue in the interest of public safety,'' a team spokesperson said. There was a clause saying the statue stayed when Richardson, amidst allegations of sexual and racial misconduct, sold the team to David Tepper in 2018.

The best NFL teams and players of the decade
We're down to the final days in 2019, so it's time to identify the best teams and players of the past decade using Football Outsiders metrics: DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average) for teams and DYAR (Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement) for players.

10. 2015 Carolina Panthers (+30.8%)
This list originally included the 2019 New England Patriots when it ran after Week 15, but with a poor performance against Miami in Week 17, the Patriots dropped off and the 2015 Panthers replaced them. This team was second in the league on defense and eighth on offense, losing only one game during the regular season.

Panthers defensive coordinator Phil Snow has been in Charlotte five months and he hasn't met 97 percent of the team because of the coronavirus. He also hasn't bought a house. “This will be my 44th year in coaching and there's [been] nothing like it,'' he said.

Panthers special teams coach Chase Blackburn says veteran kicker Graham Gano appears to be doing well after spending last season on injured reserve recovering from knee surgery. He says the battle between Gano and Joey Slye, who kicked last year, is one many teams would like to have. No predictions, though. “It'll play itself out . . . as most things always do in training camp at all positions,'' Blackburn said.

Cam Newton still hasn't found an NFL job, but he appears to be breaking ties to Charlotte, N.C., where he lived for much of the past nine years. The former Panthers quarterback has put his uptown condo, which resides in the same building that Michael Jordan has lived, on sale for $2.9 million. The property reportedly was on the market last year at $3.2

Matt Rhule had a Hall of Fame cast speak to Carolina positon groups during offseason workouts. Brian Urlacher spoke to linebackers, Julius Peppers to defensive linemen, Ryan Clark to defensive backs and Joe Montana to quarterbacks. All virtually, of course.

Panthers coach Matt Rhule said he had an antibody test for COVID-19 as part of his routine physical and the result was negative. Also said he has a nice mask as the North Carolina governor mandated people must wear masks when going to public places.

Matt Rhule calls the decision for the Panthers to move on from mental health clinician Tish Guerin a personnel decision. He did not speculate on how that role would be filled. Guerin was one of the first in-house hires of her positon in the NFL.

Panthers coach Matt Rule says neither he nor his staff plan to return to the stadium until players are allowed in. Again rookies tentatively are scheduled to report on July 21.
