NFL training camp previews for all 32 teams: Predictions, fantasy battles, players to watch​


Thirty-one NFL training camps open this week after the Las Vegas Raiders got an early start last week, and there is no shortage of compelling storylines across the league.There was plenty of movement in the offseason, from quarterbacks such as Russell Wilson and Matt Ryan to elite wide receivers such as Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill.

Camp prediction: Baker Mayfield won't be the starting quarterback, at least initially. This might come as a shock to the 91.6% on my informal Twitter poll who predicted Mayfield would be the Week 1 starter. But Sam Darnold has an entire offseason learning Ben McAdoo's system and the terminology to his advantage. Darnold is also healthy while Mayfield is about six months removed from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder. He's on track to a full recovery, but that's still an obstacle to overcome. Darnold has nothing to lose for the first time in his NFL career, so he has less pressure than the top pick of the 2018 draft.

The most compelling position battle: Quarterback easily. General manager Scott Fitterer added competition at every position to strengthen the overall roster. But the biggest question remains quarterback, as it has been since the middle of the 2018 season, when Cam Newton began to struggle with a shoulder
injury. Trading for former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield three weeks before training camp reinforced that the Panthers aren’t comfortable that Sam Darnold can lead them to the playoffs. Fitterer saying both quarterbacks will get equal reps in camp further emphasizes the uncertainty, particularly after all the praise heaped on Darnold during offseason workouts. Fitterer didn’t just trade for a veteran quarterback, he traded for one that led the Cleveland Browns to an 11-5 record and a playoff win in 2020. Darnold is 17-32 as a starter and has never been to the playoffs. He also went 4-7 last season in his first year with the Panthers after a 3-0 start. Mayfield’s dynamic personality versus Darnold’s stoic disposition also makes this compelling.

Matt Rhule: QB battle between Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold will result in NFL wins for Carolina Panthers​


Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule doesn't know whether his starting quarterback will be the recently acquired Baker Mayfield or returning starter Sam Darnold, but he believes the competition will give the team its best chance to succeed since he arrived in 2020. The ride begins on Tuesday, when the Panthers report to training camp at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It'll be Rhule's third NFL camp after consecutive five-win seasons to begin his NFL head-coaching career. Darnold was 4-7 as the starter last season, prompting the team to go after former Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson during the offseason. The Cleveland Browns won that battle, making Mayfield expendable.
The Browns pursued Watson after Mayfield struggled to a 6-8 record last season following an 11-5 record in 2020. So both quarterbacks, Mayfield (the top pick of the 2018 draft) and Darnold (the third), come into camp with something to prove.

Christian McCaffrey's 'bougie' training camp room had Matt Corral and Sam Darnold in awe​


Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Matt Corral had to go shopping for a blanket and pillow when he arrived for training camp on Tuesday to make his Wofford dormitory room livable. Running back Christian McCaffrey arrived with enough supplies to make his room almost palatial, or as he called it, the "bougiest room on the team.'' McCaffrey having the most dressed-up room entering his sixth year in the NFL shouldn't come as any surprise. In 2020, after becoming the league's highest-paid back with an average salary of $16 million a year, he and girlfriend Olivia Culpo moved into an 11,000-square-foot, six-bedroom, 7.5-bathroom house valued at $7.5 million.

Eason efficient, Ehlinger shines late as Colts beat Panther
Ehlinger, a sixth-round pick out of Texas, began his NFL debut with an interception. But he regrouped and drove the Colts to a tying touchdown capped by his 2-point conversion run. Carolina's Joey Slye converted field goals from 29, 28 and 41 yards.

Week-2: Sat, Aug 21: vs Baltimore L
Ravens tie NFL record with 19th straight preseason win, 20-3
Tyler Huntley threw for 187 yards for the Ravens, who equaled the mark set by Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers, who had a 19-game winning streak in exhibitions from 1959 to 1962. Sam Darnold had his first action at quarterback for Carolina, but left after one seven-play series.

Week-3: Fri, Aug 27: vs Pittsburgh W
Darnold throws 2 TDs, Panthers smother Steelers backups 34-9
Darnold, who has seen most of his action in joint practices rather than games this preseason, spent much of the first quarter under duress despite playing against a defense resting all of its starters. Steelers QB Dwayne Haskins started and struggled, completing just 9 of 16 passes for 108 yards with one interception and one late touchdown


Regular Season (5 - 12)

Week-1: Sun, Sep 12 vs New York Jets W
Darnold, defense lead Panthers past Jets 19-14 in opener.
Darnold maintained his even-keeled persona after throwing for 279 yards and a touchdown and running for another score. Sam Darnold, acquired from the Jets for three draft picks this past offseason. Six different players were in sacks for the Panthers. New York Jets Zach Wilson kept battling, though and finished 20 of 37 for 258 yards with two touchdown passes to Cory Davis in his first career start.

Week-2: Sun, Sep 19 vs New Orleans W
Darnold throws 2 TDs, Panthers D dominates Saints 26-7
With an effective running game led by Christian McCaffrey, a reliable set of wide receivers that includes D.J. Moore and defense that is playing lights-out, Darnold is off to a 2-0 start as Carolina's starting quarterback. Carolina's defense held Alvin Kamara to 5 yards on eight carries as the Saints struggled with five of the team's offensive coaches out because of COVID-19 protocols.

Week-3: Thu, Sep 23 @ Houston W
Texans done in by inability to run ball in loss to Panthers
Carolina's top-ranked defense sacked Mills four times and held him to 168 yards passing. Mills was pressed into action after Tyrod Taylor suffered a hamstring injury last Sunday and was placed on injured reserve. Mills threw for a touchdown and avoided big mistakes after he threw an interception in the second half of Sunday's loss at Cleveland. But the Texans (1-2) finished with just 42 yards on the ground, and that forced Mills into tough down-and-distance situations as Houston punted six times.

Week-4: Sun, Oct 3 @ Dallas L
Elliott, Cowboys run over top defense, beat Panthers 36-28
Darnold had two rushing touchdowns to become the first NFL quarterback with at least five TDs on the ground in the first four games. Elliott carried 20 times for 143 yards in the two-time rushing champion's first triple-digit game of the season, Dak Prescott threw four touchdown passes and the Cowboys beat the Panthers 36-28 on Sunday.The Cowboys sacked Darnold five times.

Week-5: Sun, Oct 10 vs Philadelphia L
Hurts runs for 2 TDs, Eagles come back to top Panthers 21-18
Hurts finished with 198 yards on 22 of 37 passing and ran for 30 yards on nine carries, while DeVonta Smith had seven catches for 77 yards and a 2-point conversion for the Eagles. Darnold finished 21 of 37 for 177 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.

Week-6: Sun, Oct 17 vs Minnesota L
Cousins throws TD pass in OT; Vikings beat Panthers 34-28
Kirk Cousins threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns against the league's top-ranked pass defense, including a 27-yard touchdown pass to K.J. Osborn on the first possession of overtime. Carolina's Sam Darnold finished 17 of 41 for 207 yards with one touchdown and two turnovers and nearly pulled off a wild comeback.The Panthers are 3-0 with Christian McCafffrey in the lineup and 0-3 without him.

Week-7: Sun, Oct 24 @ New York Giants L
Jones passing and catching, Giants D spark win over Panthers 25 - 3
The catch was a hot topic. Jones, who finished 23 of 33 for 203 yards with six carries for 30 yards. Darnold, traded to Carolina in the offseason, was lifted in the fourth quarter after hitting 16 of 25 passes for 111 yards and the pick. PJ Walker finished up.

Week-8: Sun, Oct 31 @ Atlanta W
Defense shines, Panthers snap skid by beating Falcons 19-13
Carolina's defense Totally stuffed Matt Ryan and the Falcons, who managed a measly 213 yards total offense. Darnold threw for a mere 129 yards on 13 of 24 completions. Atlanta (3-4) had won two straight games, only to squander a chance to climb above .500 for the first time since 2017.

Week-9: Sun, Nov 7 vs New Engiand L
Pats shut down Darnold, Panthers, cruise to 24-6 victory
New England's defense intercepted Darnold on three consecutive possessions in the second half. Belichick is 4-0 against Darnold, and the quarterback has thrown nine interceptions and one touchdown pass in those outings. McCaffrey had 14 carries for 52 yards and caught four passes for 54 yards, but the Panthers have only scored one touchdown in the past three games.

Week-10: Sun, Nov 14 @ Arizona W
Superman's sequel: Newton leads Panthers over Cards 34-10
Newton was saved for mostly short-yardage situations. The 32-year-old provided a flashback to his MVP days in his second debut with the Panthers, throwing for one touchdown, running for another. P.J. Walker completed 22 of 29 passes for 167 yards.Backup Colt McCoy, who was playing a second straight game for the injured Kyle Murray.

Week-11: Sun, Nov 21 vs Washington L
Heinicke, Washington spoil Newton's homecoming 27-21
Taylor Heinicke who upstaged Cam Newton by throwing for 206 yards and three touchdowns against the league's top-ranked pass defense, helping Washington spoil the 2015 MVP's return to Bank of America Stadium. Newton has now lost nine straight starts with the Panthers dating to the 2018 season.

Week-12: Sun, Nov 28 @ Miami L
Dolphins win 4th straight, roll past Panthers 33-10
Tua Tagovailoa completed 27 of 31 passes for 230 yards and a score. Jaylen Waddle had nine catches for a season-best 137 yards and a touchdown, and the Dolphins feasted off five sacks and three interceptions. Newton was pulled in the fourth quarter after completing just five of 21 passes for the Panthers, who lost for the seventh time in their past nine games.

Ryan, Falcons stay hot on the road, beat Panthers 29-21
Matt Ryan threw for 190 yards and a touchdown, Walker returned an interception of Cam Neton 66 yards for a touchdown and the Falcons improved to 6-2 away from home.

Bills end 2-game skid with 31-14 win over spiralling Panthers
The Panthers (5-9) dropped their fourth straight and lost for the ninth time in 11 games. In a what-else-can-go-wrong season.

Brady, Bucs rout Panthers 32-6 to clinch NFC South title
The Bucs (11-4) put up 391 yards on offense after being shut out 9-0 by the New Orleans last week. Newton was 7 of 13 for 61 yards and ran for 42 yards en route to losing his 13th straight game as a Carolina starter,

Week-17: Sun, Jan 2 @ New Orleans L
Jordan, Saints' defense secure 18-10 win over Panthers
Taysom Hill completed 17 of 28 passes for 222 yards. He also led the Saints in rushing with 45 yards. Darnold completed 17 of 26 passes for 132 yards, a significant drop-off from his winning outing against the Saints in Week 2.

Week-18: Sun, Jan 9 @ Tampa Bay L
Buds beat Panthers 41-17, earn No. 2 playoff seeding in NFC
Brady completed 29 of 37 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns before taking the last half of the fourth quarter. The Panthers are 10-23 in two seasons under the former Temple and Baylor coach Matt Rhule.

The player with the most to prove: This could be Darnold. Or Mayfield. But for the sake of not piling onto the quarterback spot let’s go with running back Christian McCaffrey. When healthy, he’s one of the best, most versatile weapons in the NFL. What McCaffrey has to prove is he can stay healthy. He’s played in only 10 of 33 games the past two seasons because of injuries. The Panthers are 6-17 without him during that span. Coach Matt Rhule calls it bad luck that injuries have impacted McCaffrey’s playing time, noting all have been of the soft tissue variety. But McCaffrey was concerned enough during the offseason that he contacted Hall of Fame back Marshall Faulk for training advice in hopes something will help him stay on the field more. A healthy McCaffrey will make it easier for Darnold or Mayfield to prove themselves.

The biggest question: Again, let’s avoid quarterback and go with will the rebuilt offensive line be an upgrade? This group was a disaster in 2021, allowing the fifth-most sacks (52). So Fitterer made a commitment to fix it. He added guard Austin Corbett and center Bradley Bozeman in free agency. He made Ikem Austin Ekwonu the sixth overall pick of the draft to play left tackle. That was the first time Carolina spent a first-round pick on an offensive lineman since Jeff Otah in 2008. Pro Football Focus’ Michael Renner ranked the revamped line 24th, and in his words a “conservative estimate for what was one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL last season — but it's one that is now bursting with potential after multiple offseason moves." The additions, with Taylor Moton already one of the top right tackles in the league and second-year player Brady Christensen likely at guard, makes this group a big upgrade on paper. But until they come together on the field, it remains a question.
