Carolina Panthers

Panthers News:

Cam Newton did a little more on the second day of the Panthers' mandatory three-day minicamp. He expanded his range from 15 to about 20 yards and threw a handful of passes to moving targets as opposed to stationary. He still did not participate in team drills.

For Panthers Pro Bowl linebacker Luke Luechly the offseason has been about improving a pass rush that finished 27th in the NFL in sacks last season. So far, with the move to a 3-4 front and the additions of Gerald McCoy, Bruce Irvin and Brian Burns, Carolina seems headed in the right direction. Deciding on a free safety is the biggest question facing the defense heading into training camp.

The Panthers will hold joint training camp practices with the Buffalo Bills on August 13 and 14, the final two days of camp at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The teams will play a preseason game in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 16. The Panthers report to camp on July 24 with the first practice scheduled for the 25th.

Panthers' camp observations: 1. Luke Kuechly was held out of of team drills for the second straight day after leaving Wednesday's session following what coach Ron Rivera called a "football injury'' in a pileup. He was in pads, though, so a good sign; 2. Newly-signed free safety Tre Boston worked with the second-team initially, but don't expect that to last. He made some plays; 3. RB coach Jake Peetz got the night off to be with his wife, who is in labor; 4. Cam Newton completed a long touchdown pass to WR Curtis Samuel, who got well behind CB James Bradberry. 5. Kyle Allen continued to work ahead of Will Grier for the backup job for the second straight practice.

Donte Jackson's 'pit bull' mentality stirred, not shaken, by series

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Jackson, otherwise known as “Action Jackson," came off as frustrated and mistake-prone in the series. Now, it's not that he didn’t make his share of mistakes, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort or confidence that viewers might have perceived. Newton has been, according to Panthers offensive coordinator Norv Turner, quieter than in past years during this training camp. Not having linebacker Thomas Davis to trash-talk with has something to do with that. Staying focused on rehabbing from shoulder surgery does too.
