Panthers loss gives celebratory Bears No. 1 pick

The Chicago Bears closed out the last day of 2023 with plenty to celebrate. The Bears beat the Atlanta Falcons 37-17 during their final game of the year at Soldier Field, which marked their seventh win of the season and fifth straight at home. After starting the season 2-7, Chicago has won four of its past five games. The Panthers' 26-0 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Arizona Cardinals' win over the Philadelphia Eagles ensures Carolina (2-14) will finish the season with the worst record in the NFL, meaning the Bears are officially locked into possession of the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft.

The Bears will head into the offseason with the No. 1 selection for a second straight year. Chicago earned the top pick on the last day of the 2022 season and traded it to Carolina on March 10 in exchange for the ninth and 61st overall selections in the 2023 draft, Carolina's 2024 first-round pick, a 2025 second-rounder and Moore. The Panthers lost their first six games of the season and fired first-year coach Frank Reich after a 1-10 start. Carolina entered Sunday having scored in 342 straight regular-season games since Week 13 in 2012, the second-longest active streak in the NFL, behind only the Baltimore Ravens, who are now up to 352.

Panthers owner David Tepper appears to toss drink at fans

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was caught on video during Sunday's 26-0 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars apparently throwing a drink in the direction of Jaguars fans from his open-air suite at EverBank Stadium. The video was posted on social media Sunday. The incident appeared to happen with about three minutes to play after an interception by quarterback Bryce Young, who was so frustrated after a sack early in the game that he threw a tablet on the sideline. A Panthers spokesperson declined to comment. NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said the league is "aware of the video" and has "no further comment at this time." It came in a loss that ended Carolina's streak of 342 games (dating back to 2002) without being shut out. It came on a day when the Panthers (2-14) assured they would have the NFL's worst record, giving the Chicago Bears (who own Carolina's pick) the top selection of the 2024 draft.

panthers' david tepper fined $300k for tossing drink at fans
Tepper is the second-richest owner in the league with a net worth of $20.6 billion. The fine represents less than 1% of his wealth. The team has a record of 31-67 since Tepper took over.

which panthers coaches are most likely to return for 2024
Multiple league executive and coaching sources believe Tepper's drink toss, along with six consecutive losing seasons and his history of being impatient with head coaches, will have an impact on the search.

Week 18: vs. Tampa Bay L
buccaneers clinch nfc south title with 9-0 win over panthers
Mayfield spent last season with the Panthers, but went 1-5 as a starter and was released midseason. He played through some sore ribs, and completed 20 of 32 passes. Rachaad White ran for 75 yards for Tampa Bay. - Bryce Young finished 11 of 18 for 94 yards and the Panthers had two potential touchdowns overturned. The Panthers became the first NFL team since at least 1991 to fail to run a single play while leading in the fourth quarter of a game. Both of Carolina’s wins this season came on field goals at the end of regulation when it was trailing.

What went wrong for Panthers in dysfunctional 2-15 season?

The Carolina Panthers began the 2023 season with veteran wide receiver Adam Thielen believing they could compete for the Super Bowl with rookie quarterback Bryce Young. They ended it with an NFL-worst 2-15 record, the firing of head coach Frank Reich after a 1-10 start, the dismissal of general manager Scott Fitterer after the Panthers were shut out in their final two games, and Young having one of the worst rookie seasons ever among quarterbacks taken No. 1 overall.

The decision to trade two first-round picks and top wide receiver DJ Moore to the Chicago Bears to move up from ninth to first to select Young in last year's draft created the most scrutiny and played a role in Fitterer's dismissal. That No. 2 overall pick C. J. Stroud led the Houston Rockets to the playoffs hasn't helped.

First, the Panthers need to hire a new coach and general manager. Assistant general manager Dan Morgan will handle personnel decisions for now, and multiple NFL executive sources believe the former Carolina linebacker would be a good choice as the full-time GM. Those same sources also suggest Tepper needs to make the new hires and get out of the way.

Bears, Vikings, Jaguars, Panthers to each host 2024 game in Europe

The NFL has designated the four teams that will give up a home game in 2024 and host a game in Europe instead, the league announced Thursday. The Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars will each host a game in London, while the Carolina Panthers will host a game in Munich. Opponents and dates will be announced along with the rest of the NFL schedule in the spring. The NFL will not play in Mexico City due to renovations at Estadio Azteca. But the league previously announced plans to play a 2024 game at Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil. The NFL has not announced either team for that matchup.

When the NFL shifted to a 17-game regular season in 2021, it created a schedule formula that alternated nine and eight home games between NFC and AFC teams each year. Any team in the conference with nine home games is eligible to be designated to host an international game. The Jaguars, who are in the AFC, have a separate agreement to host home games in London. The Bears, Vikings and Jaguars all have international marketing rights in the United Kingdom, under the NFL's global market program, while the Panthers maintain rights in Germany.

why bryce young still has a bright future with panthers
Young's first NFL season will be remembered mostly for his 2-14 record and statistics that ranked him at the bottom of the league and played a role in the firing of head coach Frank Reich after a 1-10 start and general manager Scott Fitterer after the season finale. Overall, he had one of the worst statistical seasons ever for a quarterback taken at No. 1. His Total QBR (33.3) ranked 29th out of 30 qualified quarterbacks and was third worst among players taken No. 1 since 2007.

Bryce Young

Bryce Young Rookie Stats
Young's 11 touchdown passes tied for the fewest in NFL history -- not just among rookies -- for a quarterback with at least 500 attempts. Young had never experienced a losing season at any level before this year. But he had been on teams that didn't have the ideal talent around him to be successful before he arrived.

panthers promote ex-lb dan morgan to gm position
Morgan, 45, was the assistant general manager under Scott Fitterer, who was fired after the Panthers' league-worst 2-15 season. He also spent seven seasons as a linebacker for the Panthers after being selected in the first round of the 2001 draft (11th overall) out of Miami.

5 things that should attract the panthers' next coach
The Panthers are coming off their sixth straight losing season, with a 31-68 record during that span that is tied with the New York Jets for worst in the NFL, and a league-worst 2-15 record this season.

**************
Remember, Tampa Bay, who lost Sunday in the divisional round to Detroit, won the division with a 9-8 record. There still isn't a team with a franchise quarterback -- New Orleans' Derek Carr had the highest Total QBR in the division but ranked 16th overall (56.4)

panthers hire buccaneers o-coordinator dave canales as coach
The Panthers hope Canales, 42, can do for Bryce Young what he did for quarterbacks Russell Wilson, Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield.

***************
Canales was the passing game coordinator for the Seahawks in 2020 when Wilson set career highs with 40 touchdowns - Canales was the quarterbacks coach for Seattle in 2022 when Smith passed for a career-high 4,282 yards and 30 touchdowns with a 69.8 completion percentage.- Canales was the offensive coordinator at Tampa Bay this season when Mayfield, who spent the previous season with the Panthers, had a career-high 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns and 64.3 completion percentage

What does new Panthers coach Dave Canales bring to Carolina?

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper apparently saw the same thing in his search for a new coach. Instead of requesting to interview proven winners such as former Patriots coach Bill Belichick or former Titans coach Mike Vrabel, instead of waiting for hot prospects such as etroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to become available (before he chose to stay in Detroit), he hired the 42-year-old Canales, whom no other team was pursuing. Josh Canales believes those who were surprised by his younger brother's hire will one day understand why it seemingly came out of nowhere.

Those who followed Canales' coaching journey -- which began in 2004 as OC at Carson High, where he was previously a star receiver and defensive back -- believe the fifth Latino coach in NFL history is the perfect choice to turn around a franchise with six straight losing seasons. They believe he is the right man to fix quarterback Bryce Young -- who had a historically bad rookie season as the No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 draft -- like he did with 2018 No. 1 overall pick (and former Panthers QB) Baker Mayfield last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Geno Smith in 2022 with the Seattle Seahawks.
