Carolina Panthers hire Thomas Brown as offensive coordinator
Brown, 36, was an assistant head coach/tight ends coach for the Los Angeles Rams last year under Sean McVay. Brown has spent the past three seasons in Los Angeles and was the team's assistant head coach/running backs coach when the Rams won the Super Bowl two years ago.

With coaching staff in place, what's next for Carolina Panthers?

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper understands he can’t buy the talent likely needed to build a Super Bowl-caliber roster this year given the team’s current salary cap limitations. The billionaire also understands, as he said after making Frank Reich the sixth head coach in franchise history, there are no salary cap limitations on building a staff. Reich was able to lure two former NFL head coaches to his staff in senior defensive consultant Dom Capers, 72, and senior assistant Jim Caldwell, 68. The Panthers' staff has won a combined 10 Super Bowl rings and has a combined 191 years of NFL coaching experience. But for the Panthers to become a playoff team for the first time since the 2017 season, a lot has to happen.

Derek Carr to meet with Carolina Panthers, source confirms

The Carolina Panthers will meet with free agent quarterback Derek Carr this week at the NFL scouting combine, a league source confirmed to ESPN. Carr, who is expected to arrive Tuesday in Indianapolis, already has visited the New Orleans Saints and New York Jets this offseason. The Panthers have only two quarterbacks -- 2022 third-round draft pick Matt Corral and journeyman Jacob Eason currently under contract, and neither of them have started a game in the NFL. Carr was released by the Raiders on Feb. 14 after declining to waive his no trade clause and just before more than $40 million of his contract would have become guaranteed. Set to turn 32 on March 28, he holds most of the Raiders' franchise passing records, throwing for more than 4,000 yards in four of the past five seasons.

Panthers impressed with Derek Carr, combine QBs as they explore all options
Carr appears to be an upgrade from the likes of quarterbacks Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield, whom Carolina has gone through the past three seasons. Carr has been to four Pro Bowls.

What would it cost the Panthers to trade up for an elite QB in NFL draft
But to trade up for any of the top quarterbacks, it’ll be costly in terms of draft picks and maybe players. That so many teams in the top 10 are looking for a quarterback has driven the price up even more than past years, according to sources in Indianapolis.

Bears trading No. 1 overall pick to Panthers for haul that includes WR DJ Moore, sources say

The Chicago Bears are trading the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for four draft picks and wide receiver DJ Moore, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Bears will receive Carolina's first-round selection at No. 9, the 61st pick (late second round), a 2024 first-round selection and a 2025 second-round pick, according to Schefter.

This will be the third time the Panthers have had the top pick. They had it in their first-ever season, 1995, but traded it to the Cincinnati Bengals in exchange for the No. 5 pick and No. 36 in the second round. They selected quarterback Kerry Collins at No. 5. They also had the top pick in 2011 and selected Auburn's Cam Newton, who went on to win the 2015 MVP and lead Carolina to the Super Bowl.

Carolina has been looking for a franchise quarterback since Newton developed shoulder issues midway through the 2015 season. It moved on from Newton prior to the 2020 season and went with Teddy Bridgewater. The Panthers traded for Sam Darnold, the third pick of the 2018 draft, in 2021. They traded for Baker Mayfield, the top pick of the 2018 draft, prior to last season.

49ers agree to one-year deal with former Panthers QB Sam Darnold, source says

The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a one-year deal with former Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. He bolsters the 49ers' depth at quarterback with Jimmy Garoppolo's exit to the Las Vegas Raiders and both Brock Purdy and Trey Lance returning from injuries. He went 4-2 over the final six games for the Panthers after being activated from injured reserve, threw seven touchdowns to three interceptions and rushed for two touchdowns. It was a stark contrast from the player that went 13-25 in three years with the Jets, throwing 45 touchdown passes to 39 interceptions after a stellar college career at USC.

Source: Panthers, Andy Dalton to agree on 2-year, $10M deal

The Carolina Panthers and free agent quarterback Andy Dalton are expected to reach an agreement on a two-year, $10 million deal that includes $8 million fully guaranteed. Dalton will give Carolina the veteran it has been seeking to help bring along the quarterback it selects with the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft. He started 14 games, completing 66.7% of his passes for 2,871 yards, 18 touchdowns and 9 interceptions for the Saints, who finished 7-10 and missed the playoffs. Dalton has started 162 of 166 games over his career, completing 62.5% of his passes for 38,150 yards, 244 touchdowns and 144 interceptions.

2023 NFL draft: Latest on Carolina Panthers' No. 1 pick

The Carolina Panthers now have the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL draft, and they will surely be targeting a quarterback prospect. The Panthers moved up from No. 9 overall in a trade with the Chicago Bears, who originally had the top pick after a 3-14 season. The Panthers have been searching for an answer under center for a while now, finishing 31st (27.6) and 30th (35.7) in Total QBR in the past two seasons, respectively. Four different quarterbacks have started at least five games for them over that time. This move gives Carolina the chance to find its franchise signal-caller.

Panthers' plan lures Adam Thielen, puts No. 1 pick in 'good position'

Thielen signed a three-year, $25 million deal anyway because he liked what general manager Scott Fitterer and coach Frank Reich had done in free agency with additions such as former Philadelphia Eagles running back Miles Sanders and veteran quarterback Andy Dalton. He liked the roster so much that he chose the Panthers because he believed they had the best chance to win a Super Bowl, even after talking to the Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos.
