Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe

I didn't really like his monologue this week, either, but maybe that was because I'm an American watching an American make observations about America for a British audience!

I'd dislike him about a third less if he stopped prefacing and ending his interviews with "I'm Doug Stanhope, and that's why I drink."

Was it just me or was this week's one really padded? A lot of segments ran on for a lot longer than they needed to... Simpsons style.

Having said that, I could listen to Charlie Brooker read out the internet from cue cards forever.

"He was found hiding in a carpark... which kings don't tend to do" made me laugh a lot for some reason. Philomena Cunk's great. Her tone of voice always cracks me up.

Ugh. TIM KEY?! BRING BACK STANHOPE

The part talking about Die Hard/Brue Willis went on way too long. I mean I guess the joke was about the repetitiveness of the new Die Hard movie but it just felt...repetitive.

Also maybe they were supposed to review the movie but there were no press screenings (because it's shit) so the movie review bit became a tv review bit.

I'm starting to think the weekly basis doesn't work very well. They're just not scraping together enough material. The Tim Key and Doug Stanhope segments are obviously just in there to fill up time when they can't come up with topical stuff, and this week they fell back on both!

The Pope Lady did make me lol each time, though. And the Brian Cox bit was quite funny, but it went on longer than it needed to.

Nice to see Dobby.

I liked the joke at the beginning about Hollywood buying people's ideas and turning them into shit movies. Very wry indeed.

"People say Stewart Lee's funny, but he's never done anything as funny as that. And never will."

I guess he got the message people don't like the film review bit.

I like the film review bit and would've enjoyed hearing Moss from The IT Crowd and Frank Skinner's thoughts on Cloud Atlas.

Doug Stanhope's line "It's not too soon. They JUST DIED. It's the PERFECT timing!" was on the money. Unless it's about someone important like Moira Stewart or a TOS actor!

Were Frank Skinner and Moss really supposed to be on? I noticed Sarah Milican was mentioned in the blurb a couple of weeks ago then didn't appear.

Nah, they were just the type of people I could imagine being on. Sarah Millican probably turned it down when she found out Charlie Brooker was a man. We know how much she 'ates men.

Maybe he put her in the blurb (do people call it the blurb?) as a meta commentary on how she's in everything. Maybe everything is a meta commentary on something. Even this.

I just saw their take on Harlem Shake and it was so true it hurt. They did it at my work and I tried to eat my own eyelids. I didn't eat my eyelids, as that would mean I had to watch it more.

but then again, we all WORK IN ADVERTISING so we are funky shitshipsters who love this stuff. I'm getting old.

I also liked the SHE SAID KNICKERS AND SHE IS FROM THE NORTH bit.

I was annoyed at first, but I didn't remember the penguin bit (the first time around I was probably looking at my phone sending "oooh, HIYA!" txts to people), so there was that at least.
