Do you like magical realism? Have you read One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel García Márquez? I read the book a few years ago, but I could have used someone to talk to about it. I would love to read it again.

That's the only book I can think of at the moment. You can make some suggestions too YOU KNOW.
 
I have not read that - but I really enjoyed Love in the Time of Cholera so let's do it! And yes, I like magical realism.

I will suggest something - but so far we were both intrigued by The Road and Oscar and decided by mutual consensus to read them. I have liked one other book by Garcia, and you'd like to re-read this one..it's all good! The NYTimes always has intriguing book reviews so I'll start casting an eye at them for ideas as we go along.

Of the original, I am not sure.

I liked some of the books written by Larry Millett.
 
hmmm...one of those titles sounds familiar...I like the series by Laurie R. King in which Sherlock is married to American Mary Russell, who works with him on cases and is formidable in her own right.
 
I'm re-reading The Eight by Katherine Neville. If I was stuck on an island and had to choose only five books to go with me, that would be one of them.

That doesn't go well with how Holmes was built up as character wise.

I'm not sure which one of Millett's books I like best either, of the ones I've read I enjoyed them all. The last one of his Holmes books of his that I read was Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Alliance.
 
Actually, ask eloisel about this. King has written the story line to be completely plausible,a nd in keeping with the character traits of Holmes.....Mary Russell's character had much in common with a certain woman character in the Purloined Letter. maybe you should read them before you judge them.

Plus a Holmes story without Watson as Holmes partner?
 
Hey, curiousa2z here's a page that might help you keep track of the family names in One Hundred Years of Solitude http://www.udel.edu/fllt/faculty/aml/Famtree.html It was very confusing at times cause they use the same names for different characters.

I missed your line about the storyline being possible. Dunno if I like the idea of Holmes being married still. How many books has she written with Holmes?
 
Cassie, this bloody book is slow-going!!! OMG.
Good thing I'm liking his descriptive narration - very poetic.
 
I love One Hundred Years of Solitude, I first read it when I was 20/21...[then read Love in the Time of Cholera, loved that too] - when I come back from vacation I'll check back and see if you've finished reading it yet and what you think...
 
Hang in there curiousa2z! I'm hoping reading it a second time will make me smarter, or SOMETHING. lol.
