“She stills all storms-

Her eyes kill our enemies,

And torment the unbelievers

.From the spires of Tuono

Where dawnlight strikesAnd clear water runs,

You see her shadow. In the shining summer heat

She serves us bread and milk-

Cool, fragrant with spices.

Her eyes melt our enemies,

Torment our oppressors

And pierce all mysteries.

She is Alia. . . Alia. . . Alia. . .”

Dune occupies such a weird spot in my brain, it's like a wedge rubbing up against whatever meat gives people religious experiences or something. I read the first book when I was 9 and I swear it made me feel what I eventually came to know was high as fuck. I have not known anything quite like that specific feeling in my life regardless of any inputs, chemical or otherwise.

As a result, I often have a very soft spot for other forms of Dune media including the movies and even the sci fi channel miniseries. If only because on some level they all remind me of the book that somehow got me royally fucked up when I was a kid. I'm looking forward to Dune 3: Where's My Gom Jabbar?

I still have a VHS of Children of Dune miniseries I recorded off the TV when it aired years and years ago on the SCIFI channel. Time to hook up my DVD/VCR combo and watch it again.
