Falling Skies

SO, finally saw the pilot last night, and thought it was pretty decent. I'd only seen a few minutes of it last Sunday because I was watching the season finale of two other shows I watched. ANYWAY, based on those few minutes I'd decided that it was crap, but I was wrong.

It reminds me of Jericho, which is a good thing IMO. The production values don't seem quite as good, but Jericho didn't have aliens in the budget so I forgive Falling Skies for being a little, I dunno, just not as shiny or something. The mechs and the skitters (alien robots and the aliens) look pretty good. Just when I think the show is a little cheesy they do something NOT cheesy.

Definitely worth watching if you're starving for some sci fi.

Sundays on TNT 10/9c

(the TNT commercials for Rizzoli and Isles cracked me "THE BEST SHOW OF ALL TIME" they actually said that)

I already have Eureka and Warehouse 13(in July) to fill my sci-fi hunger. Have too many shows as it is to watch this summer. Trying not to pick up too many new ones and stick to the returning shows.

I heard about this the other day and pondered downloading it. Sounds like something I'd like, but the publicity pics show an unrealistically hot cast if they're meant to be random survivors. I'll check it out now though. :)

Yeah most of the cast are too hot to be realistic! There are some other slightly cliched things about the show too, but I was mostly able to ignore that sort of thing. Now and then I'd get yanked out of the story by something, but not too bad.

I remember seeing adverts for it.

I don't have much interest in seeing it really. I'm not a fan of the whole evil aliens attacking the planet thing, it's a tired plot line for me.

Well, this one takes place 7 months after the invasion and the resistance is already begun. They briefly explain what's happened, but they're not doing flashbacks or any of that hokey crap so far. At one point of the show, I was sure the writers were borrowing some ideas from "The Road" (everyone should read that book).

I like post apocalyptic fiction, for some reason. Some of the reviews say the show continues to improve, so that makes me hopeful!

I didn't think it was too bad either. I'm not sure why, but I just got a feeling maybe the aliens arent as evil as they are portrayed. That comment about the mechs being bipedal just sort of jumped out as "CLUE CLUE CLUE"

;)

Oh yeah, and the one that they killed and watched die kinda made me think something is up with the aliens.

I think we'll find out tonight why they're taking the kids. Should be interesting!

Just watched the first ep (well, it says it's 1 and 2, but I guess that's what you guys saw too) and thought it was pretty good. The characters were believable and interesting enough to watch. I agree there were some cheesy moments (how many times did Tom point out that Hal and Ben were his sons?) and it really was ridiculous how almost everyone was above averagely attractive, but I'll definitely keep watching. I like apocalyptic fiction and I'm curious to see where this'll go. My only worry would be that it must be quite expensive to make. There are a fair few number of special fx shots, plus loads of extras and almost exclusively location shooting.

I'm glad you enjoyed it too. I'm hoping it will be less cheesy as the show goes on, pilots are usually about getting to know the characters a bit. ANYWAY, the next episode is tonight.

There's a doctor who's attractive in an obvious Hollywood way and then two obvious attractive blonde girls who are unrelated characters but will confuse me in every scene because they look the same.

The thing with the criminal dude (Pope?) is really cheesy. You probably haven't seen the newest one yet, but you'll know what I'm talking about when you see it. The bits with the aliens are still good, though.

I kind of liked him in the first one, although he seemed a bit like an over the top villain from Buffy or something. He added a spark of interest when it could've started to feel too nice and comfortable, anyway. Considering civilisation's been destroyed everyone seems very healthy and cheerful.

Downloading last night's ep now.

Mmm, yeah. Watched episode 3 and was a little disappointed. Like you say, the alien stuff is still good and still interesting, but when they get back to the base everything's cheesy and cute and you wouldn't know that 90% of the world's population had been wiped out and their children kidnapped.

The kid (I say "kid", he's probably older than me) that plays Hal is kinda bad at the acting thing. At first I thought I was picking on him because he's pretty, but he really was bad in the scene where the kids were lined up and shot. It looked like an animé character's over the top reaction, with arms flapping about and stuff.

One thing I do really like about the show is the callbacks to history. It's a shame the characters always cut him off when he's saying something interesting.

DON'T FORGET TO DOWNLOAD EP 4.

Still going along about the same. There are good bits, and dumb bits. Pope still bugs the shit out of me AND that douchey doctor (obviously trying to rip off Baltar and doing it badly).

Thought it was really dumb to have the kid they took the harness off of in the same room with the skitter, but I guess they had to contrive a situation where he'd get up and put the harness back on.

At first I thought "hmm, this is getting a bit samey", but at some point it must've really picked up because it was another enjoyable episode. Only thing is, I don't know if it has a recap at the start of eps, but if so it's not being included on downloads. I'd forgotten all about Blonde Girl #1 being abducted.

I like Pope. It makes a change having a guy who's not exactly bad, but not a total goody-two-shoes either. Sure, there's that doctor, but like you say, he's only borderline evil because they're copying Baltar. You don't get any real explanation for him being a bad person, whereas with Pope it's easy to imagine he had a tough upbringing, went to jail, etc, which made him untrustworthy.

The main bloke seems remarkably happy considering his son is being used by the enemy and the only other kid like him they thought they'd successfully removed the harness from turned out to be under mind control and died.
