Game Of Thrones season two CASTING NEWS

Yes! Even though we won't see it until April, season two will start filming next month which means we're getting casting news EVERY DAY for QUITE A FEW DAYS. If you're a BOOK READER (everytime I mention the books I'm going to do it in upper case to try to shame non-readers into reading) you'll be interested in who'll be playing your favourite characters and even if you're not you might still care, a little! There will be MILD SPOILERS due to the nature of this thread.

YES!! James Hibberd of Entertainment Weekly reports that Natalie Dormer will play Margaery Tyrell, the sister of Loras Tyrell. Natalie Dormer is an English actress best known for her work as Anne Boleyn in Showtime’s The Tudors.

What's INTERESTING is that she's apparently quite a well known actress and is 29 years old. Margaery is (MILD SPOILERS) a fairly minor character in the second book and is supposed to be only 16. So it could be that they're beefing her part up or that HBO is confident the show will got to a third or fourth season where her part will be more imporant. All the young characters have been aged up but this is a pretty big jump. But I'm sure they know what they're doing!

Out of interest, which other characters stick out as having been aged up or changed the most?

Out of interest, which other characters stick out as having been aged up or changed the most?

Ned and Catelyn Stark are both in their mid thirties in the book, I think. With Sean Bean being cast they had to age them up a bit. It didn't really make much difference (other than to people who were complaining about Cat not being "hot" enough.)

All the Stark kids were aged up by a couple of years. Again it didn't make much difference other than why Sansa was acting like a bitchy teenage in one epiosde (but she was back exactly to book Sansa by the finale.)

Dany is only thirteen at the start of the book (she finds out she's pregnant on her 14th birthday.) They had to age her up to sixteen (actress in her twenties) because of all the sex. Drogo is kinder to her from the start in the book, their first sex scene isn't as rapey as the show (but she's 13 so it's still icky!)

Cersei, Jamie and Tyrion are all a bit older than the book, but not really enough to make a difference (but similar complaints about Lena Headey not being hot enough.) Joffrey's a bit younger too. Tyrion is uglier and has mismatched eyes in the book.

Shae (Tyrion's hooker) is younger and less "VAT AM I, THA FUNNY WHORE?" in the book. It did kidn of annoy me in the show when she said something like "speak about my mother again and I'll gouge out your eyes" to Tryion. No whore would speak to a Lord that way, since many of the Lords would just have them killed on the spot (Tyrion wouldn't, but how would she know at that point?)

Renly (Robert's gay brother) is supposed to be muscular and charismatic in the book, like a younger Robert which explains why he's so popular with the people and why so many would want him to be king rather than Stannis. The show version is a bit weedier and some complained that he was more stereotypically gay.

I'm sure there's more!

I wonder if the aging up has to do with the child sex thing? LIke Danny is supposed to be well short of legal age in the books, which maybe they were afraid to portrey in the show. And if you age up the children you have to age up the parents of the children.

I didn't realise Dany was even 16 in the show, I thought she was mid-twenties, but a little bit sheltered due to being in a royal family. The rapey scenes and her evolution into a decisive queen worked very well imo, despite me thinking she was around my age. The Kalrathi's customs would seem brutal and alien at any age.

I wouldn't say Renly is stereotypically gay, exactly, because he does seem very insistent that he becomes king, but his youth and build make him seem like a very unlikely candidate. I'd assumed his casting was on purpose so we'd rule him out as a viable future king.

Shae does seem overly familiar with Tyrion... they only seem to have known eachother a few days and she pushes him around, but maybe she's just very experienced at gauging men, and has heard a little about Tyrion anyway.

I wonder how many of the differences were intentional, versus being affected by the actors available.

I think they changed Shae because they wanted this ex-porn star who'll be naked a lot (and is also an award winning actress in Germany) to play her.

I don't think so.

I love Brienne, can't wait to see what they do to Gwendoline to make her look the part. Maybe they'll stray from the books a bit and let her be a little more attractive.

She is supposed to have beautiful eyes.

'Game of Thrones' casts sorceress Melisandre and Stannis Baratheon -- EXCLUSIVE | Inside TV | EW.com

Melisandre will be played by Carice van Houten, a Dutch stage and film actress. She’s appeared in the movies Valkyrie and Repo Men. I think you’ll agree she looks just about perfect for Melisandre.

And Stannis will be played by British actor Stephen Dillane, best known to U.S. audiences by playing Thomas Jefferson in HBO’s John Adams.

There are pictures of them at the site linked to. TOO LAZY TO SNAG THEM.

EDIT: WAS JUST ABOUT TO POST THIS. :rwmad:

Stannis has been cast!

Can't say I've ever heard of him (Stephen Dillane) but I'm sure he'll be good since all of the casting has been!

ALSO, Melisandre will be played by Carice van Houten.

Never heard of her either but prepare to see her naked (in April.)

ALSO GRRM posted a new casting clue which I don't think has anything to do with those two...

His fate is one that Derek Jacobi has tasted twice.

He knew Indiana Jones, has hung with droids and jedi, thrice contended for a Larry, winning once. He’s been a knight (often), an archbishop (twice), a dean, a priest, a doctor.

Someone from Star Wars!

Liam Cunningham is Davos. No, I'm not going to pretend I know who the character is, but I hope he says "be quiet you insect!" at some point.
