Supreme Court rejects appeal of former Minneapolis police officer convicted of killing George Floyd

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin‘s appeal of his conviction for second-degree murder in the killing of George Floyd. The justices did not comment in leaving in place state court rulings affirming Chauvin’s conviction and 22 1/2-year sentence. Chauvin’s lawyers argued that their client was denied a fair trial in 2021 because of pretrial publicity and concerns for violence in the event of an acquittal. Floyd who was Black died on May 25, 2020, after Chauvin, who is white, pressed a knee on his neck for 9 1/2 minutes on the street outside a convenience store where Floyd tried to pass a counterfeit $20 bill. A bystander video captured Floyd’s fading cries of “I can’t breathe.” Floyd’s death touched off protests worldwide, some of which turned violent, and forced a national reckonong with police brutally and racism thst is still being played out.

...and he's been clean for the last three years!

Thank God for Derek Chauvin. One dead porch monkey = 1 less knee grow sucking off the system.

Best 9 1/2 minutes I've ever seen.

Derek Chauvin calls his George Floyd murder trail a 'SHAM' in new documentary
Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis policeman convicted in 2021 of murdering George Floyd, claims that he’s a victim in a new documentary that spins conspiracy theories in Chauvin’s defense. Chauvin said he used a technique to restrain Floyd that the police department taught officers. In the documentary, he and other cops claim that Chauvin’s knee was actually on Floyd’s shoulder blade, contradicting what the world saw in the video. The ex-cop also blames EMTs for taking too long to arrive at the scene. He said an ambulance bay was only eight blocks away, but it took 20 minutes for them to come.

Assault charges dropped against 17 Austin police officers in 2020 George Floyd protests as city officials request DOJ investigation

A Texas prosecutor has dropped indictments against 17 Austin police officers who were charged with assault after being accused of injuring demonstrators during the 2020 George Floyd protests, and city officials are asking the US Justice Department to investigate possible police misconduct within the department. Travis County District Attorney José Garza requested the federal probe after his office’s investigation into the Austin Police Department officers’ actions “revealed problems within the department that cannot be corrected by criminal prosecutions alone,” the prosecutor’s office said in a social media post on Monday.

The May 2020 demonstrations in Austin were part of a nationwide movement against police brutality in the wake of Floyd’s death, which was captured on video and showed a Minneapolis officer kneeling on Floyd’s neck as he pleaded for help. Several Austin officers were facing charges of aggravated assault by a public servant for “intentionally, knowingly, and recklessly” causing serious bodily harm to people during the protests, officials previously said. In total, a Travis County grand jury returned felony indictments against more than 20 Austin Police Department officers in connection with their use of force, the city said in a statement Monday.

Florida woman sues Orlando after COVID-19 curfew arrest in George Floyd protest

An Orange County woman is suing the city of Orlando and two of its officers over a COVID-19 lockdown curfew that was enforced in 2020, according to court records filed on Tuesday. The lawsuit says that the woman — identified as Careen Moreno — was “peacefully protesting” in downtown Orlando in June 2020 during a march from City Hall to Colonial Drive. However, Moreno was surrounded by Orlando police, who barricaded protestors to keep them from leaving the designated downtown area — a place zoned for an 8 p.m. curfew, the lawsuit adds. Court documents claim that officers prevented the protesters from leaving so they could arrest the protesters for curfew violations, even though protesters were leaving before the curfew expired. Moreno also said that the officer’s name was completely omitted from her arrest report. The arrest report says that Moreno and other protestors were involved in a protest over the death of George Floyd. Police said that protestors failed to comply with officers’ commands, prompting the arrests.

I appreciate the precedent you've set, Charles. This is not the first non-sports related thread you've started in TAoD.

Moreover, you'll note that - unlike every other sub-forum at TK - there is no *official* forum description for The Agony.

I have been mulling over what to do with this place since you got your panties in a bunch.

This is just a troll thread. George Floyd is not part of the TK conversation except in this thread, where it's ignored.

It's only saving grace is that it's in a spam forum.

My suggestion is to just ignore it, since every response gets his little peepee stiff and he feels like he accomplished something.

Relatives of George Floyd, Eric Garner in Mass. to push for Medical Civil Rights Act

Relatives of George Floyd and Eric Garner were at the Massachusetts State House on Thursday to fight for a bill they believe would have saved their loved ones. It is called the Medical Civil Rights Act, and they said it would guarantee medical care to anyone experiencing a health crisis during a police encounter. To Selwyn Jones, who traveled to Massachusetts from South Dakota, the mission is personal. His nephew George Floyd was murdered by a Minnesota police officer, sparking protests across the country. “I sat and and I watched my nephew die. You know when you watched that video he was not going to leave there,” Jones said. He believes his nephew’s death could have been prevented had he been given medical care at the first sign of distress.

DeSantis criticizes Haley for ‘virtue signaling’ over George Floyd murder

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) ripped former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) on Wednesday for “virtue signaling” liberals with her comments on the murder of George Floyd, a Black man killed by a white police officer in May 2020. After Floyd’s murder, Haley had posted on X, then known as Twitter, that the murder was “personal and painful for every American.” Floyd’s death, caught on camera and shared through social media, sparked global protests. Some demonstrations in America become violent. At Wednesday’s final GOP presidential debate before the Iowa caucus, DeSantis said the protests were “the worst rioting in the modern history of this country.” “People in Iowa had nothing to do with that, or Florida or South Carolina,” DeSantis said. “She was virtue signaling to the left, she was accepting the narrative and she was trying to impress people who are never going to like us.” Both Haley and DeSantis have been outspoken against Black Lives Matter (BLM), the organization and chant that many have said in protest to police-related killings of Black Americans.

Podcast host Lawrence Eppard and guest Robert VerBruggen will discuss the claims in the documentary and why they fall short.

Perceived discrimination amplified alcohol misuse among veterans in the wake of George Floyd’s murder

Researchers have found that perceived discrimination strengthened the relationship between distress related to George Floyd’s murder and unhealthy alcohol use in a group of U.S. veterans in 2020. The findings, published in Addictive Behaviors Reports, highlight the interplay of societal issues and personal health. The murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, by a Minneapolis police officer sparked a wave of social justice and anti-racism movements across the United States. This event, occurring amidst the global pandemic of COVID-19, which itself led to increased alcohol consumption and sales, prompted researchers to investigate its unique impact on U.S. veterans—a group already prone to higher rates of alcohol use disorders.

Additionally, the research team developed specific questions to gauge the subjective impact and personal distress related to social justice and anti-racism movements following George Floyd’s murder. Participants were asked, “Overall, how much has your life been impacted by social justice and anti-racism movements?” and “Please rate the extent to which social injustices and racism since George Floyd’s death have caused you distress.” The researchers found that veterans who reported experiencing discrimination exhibited higher levels of unhealthy alcohol use compared to those who did not report such experiences. This suggests a direct correlation between the experience of discrimination and increased alcohol consumption as a coping mechanism.

Seattle: racial justice protesters who sued police win $10m payout

Seattle has agreed to pay $10m to 50 demonstrators who sued over the police department’s heavy-handed response to racial justice protests in 2020, in a settlement announced by attorneys from both sides on Wednesday. The protesters were among tens of thousands who rallied downtown and in the Capitol Hill neighborhood for weeks following the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police – a period that saw Seattle’s police department abandon its East Precinct building as well as the establishment of the “Capitol Hill Occupied Protest”, a six-block zone taken over by protesters. The police department – led by then chief Carmen Best – used aggressive techniques to disperse the crowds, including flash-bang grenades, foam-tipped projectiles, and blast balls that explode and emit pepper gas.

At some points during protests, people in the crowds did cause damage, including burning police cars and trying to set a fire at the East Precinct. But a federal judge ordered the department to stop using chemical and other weapons indiscriminately against against peaceful demonstrators. When police used them even after Best and then mayor Jenny Durkan promised they would stop, the city council voted unanimously to bar officers from doing so. Among the plaintiffs in the lawsuit was Aubreanna Inda, who was standing in the middle of a street before a phalanx of officers in riot gear when a blast ball hit her in the chest and exploded, causing her to go into cardiac arrest. Volunteer medics and other protesters performed CPR and brought her to a hospital.
