Debunking the Dak Prescott contract debate: just pay him already, Dallas

Typically, the Cowboys try to account for those salaries on paper by offering the longest contracts in football. Elliott and Martin signed six-year extensions, while Smith was locked up on an eight-year pact. Those deals allow the team to hand out large salaries and then repeatedly restructure those contracts to create short-term cap space.

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott pledges $1 million to improve police training
"As our communities take action, protesting and fighting for the justice of George and every black life, I am with you!" Prescott wrote.

While expressing respect for police, Prescott also asked them to change.
"I have the utmost respect for those of you with a passion for protecting and serving your communities," Prescott wrote. "When you chose to wear the badge of a police officer, you pledged to PROTECT life and property through the enforcement of our laws and regulations. How can you claim to uphold the law when those within your ranks don't abide by it? You need to hold your own accountable. Each of you are as guilty as the men who stood beside Derek Chauvin if you do not stand up against the systemic racism plaguing our police forces nationwide. TAKE ACTION!"

A couple of football issues with training camp at The Star for the Cowboys: The Texas heat and only one grass practice field at The Star. Practices could be held early in the morning or early in the evening to keep the players out of the heat but the grass field could get worn out quickly. With a hotel next to The Star, accommodations should not be a problem.

The Cowboys will not be heading to Oxnard, California, for training camp this summer with the league directing teams to remain at their own facilities because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to multiple sources. Last week coach Mike McCarthy said the staff was planning separate camp schedules for practices at The Star in Frisco, Texas, as well as Oxnard. Since 2012, the Cowboys have held camp in Oxnard. The league has not made a determination on when training camps will open.

For the first time since March, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy is back at The Star, the team's facility in Frisco, Texas. McCarthy had been at his home in Green Bay during the draft process and the virtual offseason program but returned to Texas earlier in the week. Most of the assistants have also been to the facility Friday as well as the NFL opened team buildings to coaches for the first time. A handful of the new assistants had been away like McCarthy.

The Cowboys will place retired center Travis Frederick on the reserve/retired list Thursday, freeing up $7 million in cap space. Frederick announced his retirement in March, but the Cowboys kept him on the active roster until now to be able to spread his cap hit over the next two years. He was set to count $11.975 million against the cap, but by going this route, the Cowboys open up cap room and will have Frederick count $6.065 million against the cap in 2021.

Dez Bryant defends Jerry Jones; Richard Sherman questions Cowboys owner's silence.
Dez Bryant defended Jerry Jones this week after questioning his absence at a protest in Austin, Texas, while Richard Sherman spoke out against the Dallas Cowboys owner's silence on racial injustice in the United States.

Cowboys' success in 2020 will be determined beyond star players.
The Cowboys are led by familiar names in quarterback Dak Prescott, running back Ezekiel Elliott, wide receiver Amari Cooper, linebackers DeMarcus Lawrence, Sean Lee, and offensive linemen Zack Martin, among them. But, however you want to define success -- a trip to the Super Bowl or making the playoffs will be determined by the Cowboys' players who are not thought of right away.

With the NFL requiring social distancing at facilities once players return, the Cowboys are in better positions than most at The Star in terms of locker room capacity. They have 74 spaces in their main locker room, nearly 30 in a back locker room that was reserved for rookies during the offseason, plus another 100 spots inside Ford Center that are used by high school teams for games in the fall. The team is looking at how best to use the space that will be needed for meetings as well.

The Cowboys will join the NFL offices and a number of teams that will make Juneteenth an official holiday and give their employees the day off in observance. Although the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect Jan. 1, 1863, slaves in Texas were not notified of their freedom until June 19, 1865 when Gen. Gordon Granger read federal orders in Galveston, Texas, two months after the conclusion of the Civil War.

A small number of Cowboys players have tested positive for COVID-19, but a source said they are feeling improved. None of the players have been at The Star during the offseason because of the pandemic. "Due to federal and local privacy laws, we are unable to provide information regarding the personal health of any of our employees," the team said in a statement. “We are following all CDC, local and NFL guidelines to keep our facilities safe, including limiting employee access.”

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott signs exclusive franchise tender

The Dallas Cowboys have officially received Dak Prescott's signed, $31.4 million exclusive franchise tender. The two sides have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal, otherwise one cannot be done until after this season. News of Prescott's intention to sign the tender first broke on Sunday. The fact Prescott will be one of the highest-paid players in the NFL -- and the potential his franchise tag increases by a mandatory 20% next season to $37.7 million with a flat or lower cap in 2021 -- is the incentive for the Cowboys to secure a long-term deal before July 15.

With franchise tag signed, what's next for Cowboys' Dak Prescott?

Now that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has signed the exclusive franchise tender, here's what we know: He will make at least $31.4 million during the 2020 NFL season. The keywords are "at least." By signing the tag, Prescott, 26, has locked himself into making about eight times more than what he made from 2016-19 on his rookie contract (less than $5 million total). He also avoided something that was never going to happen -- the Cowboys rescinding the tag. By signing the tag, Prescott has guaranteed himself $31.4 million in 2020 and locks in the 2021 franchise tag at $37.7 million, even if the NFL's salary cap stays flat or takes a dip because of a fall in revenues. The deadline that matters is July 15 whether Prescott signed the tag today, yesterday or in March.
