How Wordforge was stolen from Borgs

Possibly the most ironic post ever:
Tamar Garish said:
Don't you see, Lanzman, when it is a pet peeve of his Borgs doesn't give a crap what we think and in fact doesn't want to hear dissent so he just impliments what he wants..regardless of how it will effect Wordforge as long as whatever annoys him is not bothering his sensibilities.
Swap in "Elwood" for "Borgs" and you have this whole Monkeygate scandal writ large. :bergman:

It would be hilarious if it weren't so sad. :(

After doing a little bit of digging I think that Nick and Elwood may have broken the UK's Computer Misuse Act when they stole a copy of the database to start up Haven.

Unauthorised access to computer material
...
For example, it is unlawful, without proper authority:

* to use another person's ID and password in order to access a computer, use data or run a program;
* to alter, delete, copy, or move a program or data, or simply to output a program or data; or
* to lay a trap to obtain a password.

and a case can be made even if the accused isn't a British citizen.

Gee, I hope there's no one out there with a grudge against Nick or Elwood. That last post might give them some ideas.

Why are people arguing about the legality of it? It was fucked up and that's that. Who cares if it was legal?

Because Elwood's supposed to be a man of the law, a voice of justice and honesty, and people should know that those virtues apparently only go so far, they should know that WF's 'sheriff' might've broken another country's law just to help his little powergrab come to fruition.

But...but...but...it was for the good of the board. That makes it all okay, dontcha know?

Compromising one's integrity to obtain an internet message board. Not to mention putting in jeopardy what appears to be a solid real life romantic relationship for an internet cyberfuck.

I'll leave you to decide the implications. :jayzus:

...I thought Elwood had long since gotten divorced before that CM stuff went down.

Unless it's someone else you're referring to, as I don't keep up with everyone's relationships.

Why would there be a power grab?
Seriously, please break it down for me. Why would someone go through all of this trouble, break all of these laws, to have a message board? I love my message board, and it is a community to me, but I'm not breaking laws to keep it.

Don't ask us. We didn't threaten to steal someone's database.

It's a power trip. Plain and simple. Now, I'm sure at this point T'Bonz would say something like "There is no power on the internet", and to normal folks such as you and I that's true. But for THEM it isn't. Unfortunately, some of the people on these boards seem to live out their lives here, so for them it's shit that really matters.

In all seriousness, I think you're right. Look at Listkeeper. He was fired from his job because of Wordforge, but NOT ONE member of staff told him he should get his priorities straight. They all commiserated with him.

To threaten to steal someone's property, to gaslight this individual into giving it up, really spotlights the unhealthy importance Wordforge holds in their lives.

Some have gone on record as saying the members of Wordforge are more supportive of them then their own families. For them, the board must serve as a surrogate family. To have to seek out familial closeness with strangers on the internet garners them my pity, not contempt.

Two questions, J. Allen.
1. Did you not read the first post of the thread?
2. Have you seen anybody involved deny it?

Seriously, Nick admitted it, Tamar admitted it. Chris admitted it. Bear admitted it. What else do you require? Stone tablets with flaming letters?

Maybe Eliteforge is like Scientology!

Now in all fairness to Listy; He's just as charming a person in RL as he is on the net. That being the case.....twas a quick and dirty excuse to give him the chop. If it wasn't that, it would have been something else.

So to recap:

To save WF, Elwood et al threatened to tear it asunder. Because Borgs cared about the board, he sold it, rather than allowing it to be disrupted by their shit.

Flash forward a couple years when, Elwood digs in his heels and vows that no amount of hate and discontent will cause him to sell to someone that doesn't have dirty hands; that he'll delete the board before he gives it up.

Kinda makes you wonder who really cares about the good of the board after all, doesn't it?

True enough. I worked as a computer lab assistant in the mornings back in college--the mornings were incredibly slow, but we're not allowed to surf on the nets. I did it anyway 'cuz my bookload was pretty slim and...well, it's seven in the fuggin' morning! My brain was too tired to study, lol. I got a sit-down at the end of the semester, but I wasn't fired out the bat since I did my job well and didn't go out my way to piss people off. Nor did I get indignant for my superiors doing their job and telling me to knock it off.

If I had gotten fired because of it, I wouldn't be stupid enough to announce it to the damn board  Some people just don't know when/how to keep their mouth shut and quit embarrassing themselves.
