I finally watched Catching Fire today. I liked it. I mean a lot of it is kind of repeating stuff from the first movie, but bigger and with fancier dresses. Or maybe tha'ts because I read the books and now I can't remember which parts I saw in the first movie and which parts I saw in my head. Also it doesn't have a proper ending, really, and the hero Katniss doesn't do anything all that heroic (however that is very much part of the story and I respect Suzanne Collins for the way she wrote Katniss okay.) But I did like it! The acting was good and the girl playing Joanna was very good and trident guy was cool. SO THERE.
I watched Mockingjay Part 1 at last (because it's on Netflix now.) I liked it but it does suffer a bit from splitting the book into two movies, when the book was the same length as the first two. I mean I probably wanted them to go more indepth in the first two movies, but here there were bits where I thought "they probably wouldn't have included that if it was just one movie." The acting is all very good and I like the look of it all and it's a convincing fictional world. The most effective part is where Katniss sings the hanging tree song and it goes to a montage of the rebels singing as they run into a suicide mission. That was great. Some other bits though I can see people who aren't big fans getting bored. But it was good, I liked it.
I watched it the other day too, not really expecting to enjoy it that much. But I think I'm hooked now. It was really good. It's got quite a naturalistic feel, for what it is, and I like the pacing. It's not just action sequences strung together by tiny dialogue scenes, it's pretty much all characterisation. I'll try to watch the next one in cinemas.
I remeber you hated the first one (did you ever watch the second) so that's quite the surprise! I think splitting it into two movies did allow them more time to do the characters justice. I would say the biggest problem with the split was that they didn't have a natural endpoint so it just ends with Peeta thrashing about in bed which is a bit meh. And the second part will have a lot more action...
Yes, I found the first one really boring and hated all the stuff with Peeta (Josh Hutcherson doesn't have enough facial expressions for me to empathise with him).
I did watch the second one, but can't remember much about it, even after trying to refresh my memory with the trailer.
But this one was really good. The social media/public relations side of the story was really interesting and quite timely, considering how conscious a lot of people are with their public image. And when there were action scenes they were quite limited and didn't involve loads of superhuman gymnastics.
