So.... this fall the Boeing Machinists Union decided that since the company had finally recovered from the 2001 airmarket downturn, and was now profitable (although hadn't paid off debts incurred in the inbetween years) that now was a good time to strike:
Well guess what? Maybe when the economy was going in the shitter, it's not a good idea to go on strike even if your particular sector hasn't been hit yet.
Boeing announced today that there will be an additional 5500 jobs cut in addition to the 4500 put out three weeks ago.
The Machinists Union's response:
IT'S NOT MY FAULT.... IT'S NOT MY FAULT!!!!!!
Yeah, your strike and the complete shutdown of production in the 4th quarter, had nothing to do with Boeing posting losses in the fourth quarter...
Now as bad as news as that is..... here's what brings a smile to my face.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_Machinists_Strike_of_2008On Saturday, November 1, 2008, members of the union ratified the contract, ending the eight-week strike.
....
The strike cost the union members an average of $7000.00 in base pay and cost the company $100 million per day in revenue and penalties with a postponement of the delivery of aircraft. Boeing has a $350 billion dollar backlog.

Boeing finds it easy to blame a two-year delay in getting the 787 off the ground on our 57-day strike. They will never admit it was poor management decisions or a business model that failed miserably which caused the first loss in revenue in recent years. Had they compromised a little on the contract, respected their workforce and negotiated fairly, they could have avoided a strike. Boeing could have continued on with their record making profits for 2008, but they chose a take it or leave-it attitude rather than negotiating in good faith.

Both the Machinists and SPEEA, the company's engineers union, say Boeing should lay off contractors before union members.
