i need to collect my thoughts on the tablet

OK -- here are some post-launch "regular guy" realities:

What does the regular guy think this new product is:
A competitor to Kindle for reading stuff instead of buying books, magazines and newspapers.

Does it do other things besides this?
Yes, but everything else that it does only sounds sexy to Mac developers and MacGeeks.

So, is it some revolutionary new product that people can't live without like the original iPod and iPhone?
Hell no, it's a gadget that is still 6 months away from regular people even knowing what it's supposed to be used for.

AND SO SAY I. A REGULAR GUY. It ain't gonna be the New Messiah product like other Apple gadgets. Even I don't know WTF I'm supposed to do with it at this point, or what things in my life it is supposed to replace.

CLUE ME IN, MACSMARTYPANTSES!

dicks and shoes

It's pretty and it sounds like fun to use, but that keyboard sounds completely impractical (like you say, you'd need a separate keyboard to do any real typing) and I'm not sure how useful it'd be for anything I do. I'll enjoy borrowing someone else's for five minutes to have a play with, though.

I am no Apple fanboy and have never had ANY interest in turning my desktop solution in Apple's favour but I do have an iPhone and it is STILL a remarkable device that blows everything else out of the water. Omnia? Android? Palm? They all suck compared to the iPhone and for that reason I expect the iSlab to be a success as well. If the touch screen is anywhere near as good as the iPhone then it will be very user friendly. And hey, it's sexy as well. People will buy this thing. I doubt very much they will have a stratospheric success akin to the iPhone but it will be a success.

My problem is that this thing just looks like an oversized iPhone. If Apple really wanted to shake the market up then they should have installed a web camera in to the device and developed their own video conferencing software over 3G and WiFi (free service)

The Etch A Sketch app on this thing will be brilliant though.

Tablet pc's have been around 9 years and Apple acts like this thingy is NEW!
Apple doesn't act like the idea of a tablet is new - however, the idea of a UI specifically designed for a tablet's form factor is. It's not just Windows with touch technology slapped on to it.

It's supposed to replace your laptop for things that aren't work, I think. Does my mom need anything beyond email and browsing and light word processing and photos? No. Do you, most of the time? Probably not, when you're not working. What this wants to do is make that experience, of browsing and watching video and reading books and sending emails to your grandma, easier and more pleasant, and leave your computer for the heavyweight stuff.
I don't think it's meant to replace anything, per se - like, the iPhone replaced my old phone, sure, but if you look at how I actually use them, there's light years of difference

Truly exciting idea. Imagine the pad as a video phone and you are shaking the world.

Brilliant thought.

I'm decidedly underwhelmed. As someone who is a fairly early adopter of technology (I had a Tivo before anyone but Darthsikle), I can't ever see myself using a device to read books or magazines. Like Eggs said, I stare at screens enough that when I want to read a book or magazine, I'll read the old-fashioned variety.

As another Regular Guy, I admit I don't know everything the iPad will do. But from the cursory reports I've read, it's basically a bigger version of the iPhone. Ummm...what? The whole idea behind portable electronics, at least as I see it, is for things to get smaller. I'll grant you that my iPhone is less than ideal for reading web pages, but it's good enough for a portable mobile device. If I can't fit this iPad in my pocket, why do I need it?

Mostly what I use my iPhone for is texting, making phone calls, and listening to radio stations from Philly. Jobs still hasn't told me why I need the iPad.

If I count as a "regular guy" (LOL!) I have aboslutely no fucking idea what any of this is about other than some mention of some touch screen Apple thing in the Sun today. So they'll have to try harder to impress me, obviously!!!

i'm going to start coding for this thing as soon as i have a good idea for an app.

It's a big iPhone!

I would imagine this is one of those things that you won't 'get' until you actually use one.

i'm guessing that the features people are pining for (like the front facing cam for ichat) are going to be in iPad 2... that's kinda what apple does best. create a great product that hooks people and then improve the product a year later so that those same people will have to buy another one. 2nd gen iPad will indeed crush the netbook market if the first gen don't.

I agree with Gagh. I can't see it replacing my iPhone, and I already have a wireless network in my house that supports my desktop PC, LG's laptop, my iPhone...even my PS3 and Wii. Again, why do I need to spend $499 when I can get a laptop that does more for $300? I guess it's really for dummies who have no idea how to use a basic computer.

My reluctance stems from an old-fashioned mindset -- I still don't see the things that they want me to use this thing for as things I necessarily need to do while on the go. I don't need to be connected to the intertubes with everyone up my ass 24/7. And I certainly don't expect the world to care about every fleeting thought that comes to me during a given day, or how cute my hypothetical kitty is. All my portable device really needs to do is contact 911 in event of emergency, and let me know when the next train is coming. All the rest is frosting.

^^I agree with you, but I will say that the iPhone has been a blessing for me, an East Coast transplant to SoCal. I can stay connected to my family and the city I still love, by listening to the local radio shows I love (like Preston & Steve in the morning), keep up with news, listen to sportstalk from Philly. It makes my commutes bearable, as the radio personalities here SUCK, and I don't really give a shit about the Dodgers, Raiders or Lakers.

I don't think they want it on the go, necessarily, but more on your living room table, to do stuff that might be awkward with a laptop, both because of the iPad's better viewing angle and more comfortable form factor.

Want to show someone an online article? iPad.
Vacation photos? iPad.
Restaurant reviews? iPad.
What movies are playing? iPad.
Transit schedule? iPad.
Preview a presentation you've been working on? iPad.

I'm not down with this until someone makes a skin or mod for it which makes it run LCARS.
