It looks like one of those yarn godseye things they told you how to make during arts and crafts time at day camp, except in the 27th dimension.
 
Is it specifically a physics thing or is it just a mathematical model?

It's related to Garrett Lisi's An Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything, a work in progress which, if helped along by the LHC in the coming years, will probably turn a lot of string theory on it's collective head --hence, the "opposite" hint. I posted a link to an interesting New Yorker article about it in the Mine Field (I think) awhile back.
