IF archiving had to happen in the MF, what should be archived?

CaptainWacky

I want to smell dark matter
Setting a blanket limit like "every thread more than two years old must be archived" would perhaps seems "fair", but part of the fun of the Mine Field has always been bumping random only threads from four years ago, a lot of good threads could be archived this way, never to be bumped again. ON THE OTHER HAND, if only the "bad" threads were archived, the ones we're unlikely ever to bump again...it would kind of defeat the purpose of an archive, wouldn't it? Who'd want to browse the Mine Field archive and read a bunch of crappy old "LOL I HATE MY LIFE SEX" threads from 2004? Wouldn't those threads just be better off DELETED? Should the archive preserve the "best" of the Mine Field (and who decides what is best!?) or the worst or just the oldst? What to do? WHAT TO DO?

I agree. Simple blanket-deleting old threads would be against what we are.

However, there is an awful lot of rubbish in here that we probably wouldn't miss. If deleting it is a problem, we can notify it in the Lexicon. I'm thinking of stuff along the lines of:

- All the anti-faceman threads
- All Imperium threads
- All the DLA anti-Mine Field threads

Agreed, but deleted or achived!? Apparently nothing's to be deleted until the board gets back to a million posts.

Sorry for replying with different accounts - I'm toggling between browsers.

We've got a of weighty post-heavy threads that I doubt we'd miss. There's still stacks of Numbchucks old spam in here.

Those can be deleted, for shizzle...but what should be archived?

We could set a limit, I guess. All threads over 3 years in age with less than 10 replies (or 5?) can be archived.

I deleted a bunch of huge spam threads when we reached the million mark before. They were for the most part nonsensical spam just to boost post counts but I still deliberated about deleting them.

Minefield archive?

Don't really care for that idea. I prefer a bottomless pit to compartmentalisation.

And the Badlands can take the main brunt of any pruning as well.

The problem with archiving is that if something's worth keeping, it's worth replying to. But if something's not worth replying to, then it may as well be deleted. So that doesn't seem to leave any room for archiving.

Sounds about right.

I'd prefer the option to delete non-sensical spam. Stuff that is just there to boost post counts or is just gibberish. It's a better way to go.

We could be a bit more aggressive than we have been in the past.

ALL THE PICTURES OF HOT GIRL THREADS.

Good idea, but nobody would actually look at them if they were in the seperate archive section, would they?

Anything thats got a reply that wasnt from the person who started the thread in teh first place?

If we did have to archive, the Thing of the Day threads and Wacky's other story threads should be saved.

But then I woudln't be able to bump them and trick people into reading them later!

It's a sound idea, if only there was a way of viewing the content without having to open every thread. Have you seen how many threads are in The Mine Field?

A lot.

I say if anyone tries to archive anything, we revolt and take over.

WELL, it's not like EVERYTHING'S gonig to be deleted and the archiving is to "save" certain threads...it's...hang on, how does archiving actually save space anyway? The threads are still stored on the server, aren't they? Do they use less room when they're not "active"? Messa confused.

They're kicking around some ideas, like separating the archived forums into their own board. It would be on the same server space but it would save on the server load for the main board.

Exciting ideas!
