Israeli airstrikes kill at least 5 in southern Lebanon, according to state media

At least five people were killed and 9 others injured in Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Saturday, according to the Lebanese state-run National News Agency (NNA). NNA reported that fighter jets fired two air-to-surface missiles at a house in the Al-Ain area of Kharbet Selim, killing a man, his pregnant wife, their two children and another individual. Emergency and relief teams were dispatched to recover the bodies and transport them to the government hospital in Tebnine, NNA reported. There has been daily cross-border fire between Israel and Lebanon since the war in Gaza began, and the IDF has repeatedly said it is targeting "Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure in the areas in southern Lebanon." Hezbollah has voiced support for Hamas and Palestinians, and is among several Iranian proxy groups at the center of inflamed regional tensions during the war.

Why is the US setting up temporary port off Gaza for aid deliveries?

The pier, which could take 60 days to build, might not be an effective solution to the urgent aid crisis in Gaza.

President Joe Biden has said the United States will set up a temporary pier off Gaza to deliver humanitarian supplies to the besieged enclave as Palestinians begin to starve during Israel’s blockade of the strip. On Sunday, a US military ship carrying the equipment required for initial construction work on the structure departed for Gaza, according to the US military’s Central Command. The move comes as the US has been airdropping aid amid looming famine in Gaza, which has been devastated by more than five months of Israeli bombardment, ground operations and siege. Aid agencies said the airdrops are not sufficient due to the scale of the crisis. More than 31,000 people have been killed in Gaza, and up to 70 percent of its homes have been destroyed or damaged.

First Gaza aid ship leaves Cyprus with Palestinians on brink of famine

A ship carrying 200 tonnes of aid for Gaza left Cyprus on Tuesday in a pilot project to open a sea corridor to deliver supplies to a population that aid agencies say is on the verge of famine after five months of war. While welcoming the project, however, senior U.N. officials said it could not replace the delivery of humanitarian aid by land from Egypt and Jordan. Separately, the World Food Programme (WFP) said on Tuesday it had managed to get the first aid convoy into Gaza City in the north of the Gaza Strip since Feb. 20.

The charity ship Open Arms was seen sailing out of Larnaca port, towing a barge containing flour, rice and protein. The mission was funded mostly by the United Arab Emirates and organised by U.S.-based charity World Central Kitchen (WCK). The voyage to Gaza takes about 15 hours but a heavy tow barge could considerably lengthen the trip, possibly up to two days. Cyprus, the European Union state closest to the Israel-Hamas war, is just over 200 miles (320 km) northwest of Gaza.

March 12, 2024 Israel-Hamas war

  • The first maritime humanitarian aid shipped to Gaza since the war began is on its way to the enclave from Cyprus, according to the nonprofit World Central Kitchen.
  • As fears of famine grow in northern Gaza, the World Food Programme said one of its food convoys reached Gaza City for the first time since February 20.
  • Dual US-Israeli citizen Itay Chen was killed on October 7, the Israeli military announced on Tuesday. Five other dual US-Israeli citizens are still thought to be held alive in Gaza.
  • Israel and Hamas are "nowwhere near a deal" for a ceasefire, but negotiators are still in discussions, a spokesperson for Qatar's foreign ministry told CNN. The CIA director said a deal is still possible, but it's a "very tough process."

Israel plans to direct Rafah civilians to ‘humanitarian’ zones; Hamas responds to truce deal

Israel’s military intends to direct a “significant” portion of Rafah’s population of 1.4 million toward “humanitarian islands” in central Gaza ahead of Israel’s planned ground offensive, Israel Defense Forces spokesman Daniel Hagari said. President Biden has warned in recent weeks that an Israeli invasion in the southern city would cross a “red line,” though he said: “I’m never going to leave Israel.” Hamas said Thursday that it presented “a comprehensive vision” of a proposed ceasefire deal to mediators, as negotiations continue. The vision is “based on principles and foundations deemed essential for an agreement,” and includes the group’s stance on the hostage and prisoner exchange, the group said in a statement.

Israel’s war on Gaza live: ‘Humanitarian catastrophe’ must not escalate

  • World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says he’s “gravely concerned” about the Israeli plan for a ground invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza.
  • Gaza’s government media office says 36 people were killed in Israeli army attacks on Nuseirat refugee camp. Most were children.
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu describes the latest Hamas ceasefire proposal as “ridiculous” – though a delegation led by Mossad’s spy chief is expected in Qatar for truce talks.
  • At least 31,553 Palestinians have been killed and 73,546 injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7. The death toll in Israel from Hamas’s October 7 attack stands at 1,139 with dozens taken captive.

Professor Jeffrey Sachs: ‘US is complicit in Israeli genocide’

Columbia University’s Jeffrey Sachs says the war in Gaza could end today if the United States stopped supplying weapons to Israel. “Does the United States want to be complicit in genocide?” This is the question that US leaders should be asking themselves as Israel’s war on Gaza continues, argues Columbia University Professor Jeffrey Sachs.Sachs tells host Steve Clemons that Israel could not continue “for one day” without US support, and the rhetoric from top Democrats criticising Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is “meaningless” because no action is taken to stop the war crimes. This has led to US isolation on the world stage, as Israel is allowed to continue “whatever they have in their minds… which will never lead to peace”.[/sizee]

Middle East Crisis. Israel’s Military Raids Gaza Hospital, Saying Hamas Regrouped There

Israeli forces using tanks and bulldozers raided Al-Shifa in northern Gaza on Monday in an operation they said was aimed at senior Hamas officials who had regrouped at the medical facility, setting off an hourslong battle that both sides said had resulted in casualties. The raid began before dawn, with the Israeli military’s chief spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, saying in a video statement that troops were operating in “limited areas” of the hospital complex. More than 12 hours later, Hamas’s military wing, the Qassam brigades, said that its forces were “engaged in fierce clashes with enemy forces” near the hospital.

Israel’s war on Gaza live: 23 killed in air strikes on food-aid workers

In the past hour, there has been a surge in attacks on the people of northern Gaza City. Israeli fighter jets targeted the Kuwait roundabout, the main food distribution site for the area. A group of Palestinians responsible for aid supplies and deliveries was hit. These are local “popular committees” formed to coordinate various tribes in the humanitarian relief effort in northern Gaza, after complete chaos broke out because of the lack of food over the past few weeks. They were working to ensure the safe distribution of desperately needed aid to UN centres. At least 23 were killed.

Robert F. Kennedy: 'Hamas to blame for Gaza war, any country would act like Israel'

Kennedy said that each previous ceasefire "has been used by Hamas to rearm, to rebuild and then launch another surprise attack. So what would be different this time?"

Independent US presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr offered staunch support for Israel in a Reuters interview, calling it a "moral nation" that was justly responding to Hamas provocations with its attacks on Gaza and questioning the need for a six-week ceasefire backed by President Joe Biden. Biden has also been a vocal defender of Israel since the Octobr 7 attack by Hamas, but he has recently pressured it to stem the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and accelerate a six-week ceasefire for hostage releases and aid delivery. Asked if he supported a temporary ceasefire in Gaza, Kennedy told Reuters: "I don't even know what that means right now."

U.N. resolution on cease-fire vetoed after angry exchange between U.S., Russia; Blinken and Netanyahu diverge over direction of war

The United Nations Security Council on Friday failed to pass a resolution introduced by the United States condemning restrictions on aid to Gaza and calling for a cease-fire with no started time limit— a provision that had contributed to the U.S. veto of previous resolutions. China and Russia, permanent members of the Security Council, vetoed the measure. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel on Friday. After the meeting, Netanyahu said he remained set on a ground incursion into the densely packed Gazan city of Rafah — despite warnings from world leaders against such an attack.

Israel-Gaza war: UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in new ceasefire call

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has made a renewed call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

"It is time to silence the guns," he said, speaking from the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing with the enclave. He also called on Israel to give "total, unfettered" access to humanitarian goods throughout Gaza. A UN-backed food security assessment this week said 1.1 million people in Gaza were struggling with catastrophic hunger and starvation. It added that a man-made famine in the north was imminent between now and May.

Israel cancels Washington visit after US allows UN Gaza ceasefire resolution to pass

Tensions between the United States and Israel were exposed on Monday when Washington stood aside and allowed the UN Security Council to pass a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The US decision to abstain on the vote prompted Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to cancel a scheduled trip to the US by two of his top advisers, two Israeli officials said.

The US had previously vetoed similar resolutions calling for a ceasefire. Its position evolved last week when on Friday, it put forward a ceasefire resolution tied tied to the release of hostages. That resolution fell when it was vetoed by Russia and China. The US abstention on Monday’s vote allowed the latest resolution to pass, when the other 14 members of the 15-strong council voted yes.

World Court orders Israel to halt Gaza famine; Hamas says ceasefire needed

The World Court on Thursday unanimously ordered Israel, accused by South Africa of genocide in Gaza, to take all necessary and effective action to ensure basic food supplies to the enclave's Palestinian population and halt spreading famine. But Gaza's Hamas rulers said a ceasefire was needed to halt the humanitarian crisis. The order from the International Court of Justice came as Israeli forces and Palestinian fighters battled in close combat around Gaza's Al Shifa Hospital, where the armed wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad said they attacked Israeli soldiers and tanks with rockets and mortar fire.

Judges at the court said the people in the coastal enclave face worsening conditions. "The court observes that Palestinians in Gaza are no longer facing only a risk of famine (...) but that famine is setting in," the judges said in their order. The new measures were requested by South Africa as part of its case that accuses Israel of state-led genocide in Gaza. Senior Hamas official Basem Naim said the ruling did not go far enough and Israel must be ordered to end its milatary offensive to halt the suffering.

Gaza's al-Shifa hospital in ruins after two-week Israeli raid

Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry said dozens of bodies had been found and locals said nearby areas were razed. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had killed 200 "terrorists", detained hundreds more and found weapons and intelligence "throughout the hospital". The IDF said it raided al-Shifa because Hamas had regrouped there. The two-week operation saw intense fighting and Israeli air strikes in nearby buildings and the surrounding area.

Wards were attacked because Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad operatives were using them as a base, the IDF said, accusing them of fighting inside medical departments, setting off explosives and burning hospital buildings. Images published following the Israeli withdrawal showed Palestinians walking near the charred main buildings with chunks of wall missing and carrying bodies wrapped in blankets. Graphic photos showed corpses partially exposed on the churned ground. The health ministry said dozens of bodies, some decomposed, had been found in and around the medical complex, which was now "completely out of service".
