LeBron James to be official starter for Le Mans 24 Hours race

Basketball great LeBron James will be the official starter when the 24 Hours of Le Mans sports car race celebrates its centenary this weekend, organizers of the endurance classic said Monday. The Los Angeles Lakers forward, the NBA's leading career scorer and a four-time champion, joins a list of celebrity starters who have carried out the ceremonial role over the decades. Hollywood actor Brad Pitt was the starter in 2016, and Steve McQueen lowered the French flag to start the race in 1971, the year he starred in the movie "Le Mans." James is a partner in Fenway Sports Group, which co-owns the RFK Racing NASCAR team. The U.S.-based stock car series is celebrating its 75th anniversary and has a special entry at Le Mans driven by seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson, 2009 Formula One champion Jenson Button and 2010 Le Mans winner Mike Rockefeller.

Bronny James, the eldest son of NBA star LeBron James, was released from the hospital Thursday after he suffered a cardiac arrest Monday while practicing with the University of Southern California's basketball team. James, an 18-year-old incoming freshman at USC, arrived at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles "fully conscious, neurologically intact and stable" due to USC athletics' swift medical response, said Dr. Merije Chukumerije, a cardiologist at the hospital, in a statement. He is now at home resting, Chukumerije said. In a tweet, LeBron James thanked people for their prayers and said his family is doing great.

Sources: LeBron James, Stephen Curry interested in Team USA
Several players who were part of the 2021 gold-medal-winning team in Tokyo who didn't play in the FIBA World Cup this summer, including Jayson Tatum, Devin Booker and two-time gold medalist Draymond Green, are also candidates to return, sources told ESPN. The U.S. has won the past four Olympic golds in basketball but just two of the past six World Cups.

******
Chris Paul, won Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012. Kevin Durant has won three Olympic golds and would be a candidate to play again. James, 38, won a bronze in 2004 and golds in 2008 and 2012. Davis won gold in 2012 and was part of the World Cup winner when he last played for Team USA in 2014.

Bronny James misses USC's first preseason practice, LeBron James' son 'doing very well' after cardiac arrest

Highly-touted USC freshman guard Bronny James, the oldest son of Lakers star LeBron James, missed the Trojans' first practice of fall on Monday as he recovers from a sudden cardiac arrest episode in July but is "doing very well," USC coach Andy Enfield told reporters after the workout. Since collapsing with cardiac arrest on July 24, James, a four-star recruit and a key piece of USC's third ranked recruiting class has yet to return to action, missing the team's overseas trip to Greece and Croatia for a three-game summer tour and most recently the opening of fall training camp. However, he has since received a positive prognosis after his diagnosis, with his physicians expecting him to recover fully. It's unclear still if or when James could return to the court for USC this season after signing with the school as a potential one-and-done prospect, but his teammate, Vincent Iwuchukwu, also suffered cardiac arrest last summer before eventually being cleared to play in the spring of last season. Iwuchukwu had a defibrillator device implanted in his chest before being cleared to return, playing in 14 games as a true freshman. James ranked as the No. 28 overall player in the Class of 2023 and the No. 6 overall player at the shooting guard position by 247Sports.

LeBron James' Home Court museum to open in Akron hometown

LeBron James' path from basketball prodigy to NBA scoring champion is being memorialized where it began. LeBron James' Home Court, a museum dedicated to James and his many milestones, will open in Akron on Nov. 25. A multimedia experience, the museum will include a re-creation of the apartment where he and his mother, Gloria, lived along with items from his childhood, high school playing career and championship runs with Cleveland, Miami and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Among the items on display will be the all-white suit James wore at the 2003 NBA draft, his jersey from the McDonald's All American Game and an original backboard and rim from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, where James first caught the attention of basketball fans as a teenager. A four-time NBA champion, James, 38, is in his 21st season as a pro. Last year, he passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the leading scorer in league history.

LeBron reacts to UNLV shooting, calling inaction on gun control 'ridiculous'

LeBron James said that it was "senseless" that nothing changes when it comes to gun control in the United States in the wake of Wednesday's mass shooting on the University of Nevada-Las Vegas campus that left at least three dead. "Yeah, my brother from back home texted me and told me to be safe out here because he heard about the shooting at UNLV," James said during his news conference at T-Mobile Arena ahead of the inaugural in-season tournament semifinals Thursday, when his Los Angeles Lakers will take on the New Orleans Pelicans. "First of all, my condolences go to the families that lost loved ones, families and friends and everything. The league is also planning a moment of silence ahead of Thursday's semifinals, a source told ESPN, but there isn't an expectation that its schedule will be impacted this week. Wednesday's attack at about 11:45 a.m. PT, which took place only a few miles from the Strip and the site of the 2017 massacre that killed 60 country music fans and wounded hundreds more, sent police swarming onto the campus while students and professors barricaded themselves inside classrooms and dorm rooms.

LeBron James wins in-season tournament MVP; 'no jealousy' from AD

LeBron James sat at the podium, barely damp after speeding through a postgame champagne celebration after winning MVP of the NBA's inaugural in-season tournament on Saturday. He placed the trophy on his left. Sitting to his right was the person who made the hardware possible and someone who, quite frankly, outplayed him in Saturday's 123-109 championship win over the Indiana Pcers. Despite 41 points, 20 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocks from Anthony Davis forcing Indiana's Myles Turner to foul out while defending the Los Angeles Lakers big man's relentless attacks to the paint -- James and Davis had no problem with the pecking order. The Lakers weren't shy about their motivation to win the tournament beyond the competition. The $500,000 cash prize for every player on the winning team was something that James prioritized, recognizing it represented an opportunity that was a far cry from his tough upbringing in Akron, Ohio.

LeBron, Curry, Embiid headline U.S. player pool for Olympics

Looking to win a fifth consecutive Olympic gold in Paris this summer, against maybe the best international competition ever assembled, USA Basketball is hoping to lean on veterans and an important newly naturalized American. LeBron James, who hasn't played in the Olympics since 2012; Stephen Curry, who has never played in the Olympics; and Joel Emiid, who is from Cameroon but became a U.S. citizen in 2022, have all put their names up for consideration. They were some of the biggest names announced Tuesday as part of a 41-player pool in the first step toward deciding the 12-man team. Team USA finished out of the medals with a young team at the World Cup last summer. In the wake of that result, USA Basketball executive director Grant Hill, coach Steve Kerr and general manager Sean Ford have spent the past few months lobbying older players to join the roster. The list isn't binding; players could be added for consideration or could be removed over the next several months. But it's a window into the team's philosophy as the U.S. approaches an expected huge challenge.
