NFL commissioner Roger Goodell receives 3-year extension

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, as expected, isn't going anywhere. The 64-year Goodell, who has served in the role since 2006, received a three-year contract extension through March 2027, it was announced Wednesday by the league's compensation committee. Goodell, whose deal was set to expire in spring 2024, reportedly earned $63.9 million for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. Goodell, who began his NFL career as an administrative intern in 1982 under then-commissioner Pete Rozelle, was non-committal on whether this will be his final extension as commissioner. Goodell's tenure has not been without controversy, however. Player safety, particularly concussions, has been a constant issue, as has the league's slow process of hiring minority team presidents, general managers and coaches. More recently, the league's handling of player discipline, as well as player social activism, has been a part of Goodell's legacy.

NFL MVP watch 2023: Ranking top candidates to win awards, odds
The race for the NFL's Most Valuable Player award is beginning to take shape six weeks into the 2023 season. So it's a great time to take a look at who might be the leading candidates as we head into Week 7. There are no undefeated teams left in the league, and we've already seen three different quarterbacks split time as the consensus odds favorite for the MVP award at Caesars Sportsbook.

No.5: QB Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia
While Hurts has exceeded last season's six interceptions with seven in six games, he has accounted for 12 total touchdowns (85.7% of his team's offensive touchdowns). Hurts' five rushing touchdowns are the most of any quarterback this season, and his 19 rushing attempts in the red zone are 40.4% of his team's carries inside the 20-yard line. To top it off, Philadelphia ranks fifth in scoring, averaging 25.8 points per game with Hurts leading the way.

NFL warns teams: 'Significant' discipline for fighting before or during games

The NFL has threatened to hand down significant punishment to any players or teams involved in fights before or during games. In a memo obtained Sunday by ESPN, the NFL told teams that fighting "is irreconcilable" with the league's values and "is never acceptable." The memo, sent Wednesday to top executives and head coaches of all 32 teams, also reiterated the league's warmup rules and outlined potential discipline. Any players or club personnel who fight before or during a game are subject to ejection, suspension and/or "significant fine," according to the memo. Any team whose players or personnel are involved in a fight could potentially forfeit a draft pick and/or face a fine. The NFL also said that teams whose players or personnel join an existing fight could potentially be "subject to more significant accountability measures."

Ranking the seven teams with legitimate shot at Super Bowl title
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Well, at least if the teams are the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. Through seven weeks, the Chiefs and Eagles share the best record in the NFL at 6-1. They are the two teams that played in Super Bowl LVII -- and appear to be on a collision course for Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. Kansas City and Philadelphia are very good. So which teams are going to crash their party?

*******************
No.7: Seattle (4 - 2)
The final Super Bowl contender was tough, but the Seahawks earn the title based on how they have played over the last three games. Seattle's defense has been playing at an elite level in that stretch, allowing just 10 points, 237 yards, and 4.1 yards per attempt -- while having 18 sacks. The pass defense has allowed only 142 yards per game, and that was with Joe Burrow facing them.

Sources: Raiders firing of Josh McDaniels, GM to cost nearly $85M
Some of those costs will be defrayed by offsets and mitigation, but the firings were, as one source described to ESPN, "an expensive move nonetheless." The costs didn't stop there for the Raiders, who also reworked the contracts of interim head coach Antonio Pierce and interim GM Champ Kelly. Pierce will become the 12th different person to coach a game for the Raiders over the past 20 seasons, including interim coaches.
