David Tepper stands by Panthers' decision to pick Bryce Young
Tepper had no real explanation for why the Panthers have had six consecutive losing seasons since he took over the team after having four out of five playoff appearances before that, including an NFL-best 15-1 record and trip to the Super Bowl in 2015.

Aaron Rodgers: Jets' playoff hopes a factor in return decision
After rehabbing in California, Rodgers returned to the Jets' facility on a full-time basis this week and will continue his program under the supervision of the Jets' training staff, with ElAttrache's team monitoring his progress from Los Angeles.

Jets' Aaron Rodgers practices just 11 weeks after surgury
Rodgers, who turns 40 on Saturday, is recovering at an extraordinary pace, but this doesn't mean he's a lock to play. No NFL player has returned from Achilles surgery before the five-month mark. Rodgers will be 3½ months removed from surgery Dec. 24, when the Jets play the Commanders.

Former Pro Bowl WR DeSean Jackson to retire as member of Eagles
Jackson played eight of his 15 NFL seasons with the Eagles, earning all three of his Pro Bowl nods with Philadelphia. He was a game-breaker as a receiver and returner, leading the league in yards per reception four times. Jackson also played for Washington, Tampa Bay, Baltimore, Las Vegas and the Los Angeles Rams. He appeared in seven regular-season games for L.A. in 2021.

2023 NFL playoffs: Sorting six teams in NFC wild-card bracket

The first five spots in the NFC playoff picture are basically settled. Barring something truly catastrophic, we know the 8-3 San Francisco 49ers and 8-3 Detroit Lions are getting into the NFL postseason, almost surely as division champs. The 10-1 Philadelphia Eagles and 9-3 Dallas Cowboys are getting in -- one will be the NFC East champion, and the other will likely be the top wild-card team and 5-seed in the conference. Some team, by law, has to win the NFC South. Right now, that's the 5-6 Atlanta Falcons. That's five spots spoken for in the bracket. The other two spots? Those are going down to the wire. There are six teams with a realistic chance of landing one of those two wild-card berths, with ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI) giving them somewhere between a 20% and 60% chance of playing postseason football. Each of these teams can look at their future schedule and plot out a believable path toward the playoffs.

Favorites: Brock Purdy to win MVP, 49ers Super Bowl

The San Francisco 49ers have separated themselves from the pack as the betting favorites to win the Super Bowl, and their quarterback Brock Purdy now sits atop the odds for league MVP. The 49ers, after their impressive road win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, moved to 3-1 to win the Super Bowl at ESPN BET -- the shortest odds for the big game that any team has had this season. The 49ers, Chiefs and Eagles had been co-favorites last week, but oddsmakers believe San Francisco is clearly the team to beat. Purdy entered Sunday at 9-1 to win the NFL regular-season MVP, behind four other players. When the odds reopened Monday at ESPN BET, Purdy was the favorite at 3-1. He began the season as around a 45-1 long shot to win the award and attracted significant betting interest. Purdy winning the award is the worst-case scenario for the house in Caesars Sportsbook's MVP odds.

NFL releases Walter Payton Man of the Year Award nominees

The nominees for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, which recognizes a player's commitment to making an impact off the field, were released Tuesday. One player from each team is nominated for what the league deems its "most prestigious honor." "These 32 outstanding men are making a valuable difference in their communities every day and we are proud to celebrate their special gifts and humanitarianism," commissioner Roger Goodell said. The annual award is part of the NFL Honors presentation, a prime-time awards special to be broadcast by CBS on Feb. 8 during Super Bowl week. A $250,000 donation will be made to the charity of the winner's choice, with each nominee also receiving funds to contribute.

Fans can vote on X and participate in the selection process by posting #WPMOYChallenge along with the last name/X handle of their chosen nominee, or by voting directly on NFL.com/ManOfTheYear. When two nominees have the same last name, the full name of the nominee or his X handle must be included. The award, established in 1970, was renamed to honor the late Walter Payton in 1999. Three current players have won the award -- Dak Precott, Russell Wilson and Calais Cambell-- and wear a special jersey patch to commemorate the award.

NFL officiating crew under scrutiny after missed calls

The officiating crew that did not call a blatant and potentially game-deciding pass interference penalty during Sunday night's game between the kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers game missed a similar call one week earlier in Atlanta on a play that harkened back to one of the most controversial non-calls in NFL history. With Kansas City attempting a game-tying rally in the final minute in Lambeau Field, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a long pass to wide receiver Marquez Vajdes-Scanting, but Packers cornerback carrington Valentine appeared to go over Valdes-Scantling's back before the ball arrived. The Chiefs sideline screamed for a pass interference penalty while Valdes-Scantling threw up his arms, looking for a flag that was not thrown. The Packers held on for the win 27-19.

Sources: NFL won't share salary cap projections until January

As some NFL teams begin to ponder their offseason plans, they will have to wait to hear about the confines of the salary cap that they will be working within. NFL teams usually are informed of the following year's cap projection at the league's winter meeting, which is happening this week in Dallas. The salary cap for the 2023 season is $224.8 million, and the cap typically increases anywhere from $12 million to $15 million, which would make the 2024 cap in the $240 million range.

Dak Prescott, Khalil Mack among 8 finalists for Rooney Award

Dallas Cowbpys quarterback Dak Prescott, Los Angeles Chargers three-time All-Pro edge rusher Khalil Mack and Las Vegas raiders two-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Maxx Crosby are among the eight finalists for the ninth annual Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award. Each NFL team nominated one of its players for the award, which recognizes those who exemplify outstanding sportsmanship on the field. The award was created in 2014 to honor Pro Football Hall of Famer Art Rooney Sr., the late founding owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The other finalists announced Thursday are New York Jets linebacker C.J Mosley, Baltimore Ravens guard Kevin Zeitier, Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker, San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner.

Bill Belichick on Patriots future: 'I'm getting ready for K.C.'

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick deflected multiple questions about his job status Wednesday, repeating the same answer each time: "I'm getting ready for Kansas City." Belichick's 3-10 team hosts the Chiefs on Sunday, a game that was flexed from ESPN's "Monday Night Football" mainly because of the team's struggles. Speculation about Belichick's future has swirled in part because owner Robert Kraft has been clear about his expectations. Entering the fourth season since quarterback Tom Brady's free agency departure, which pained Kraft, the 82-year-old owner said in March that "it's very important to me that we make the playoffs." Kraft hasn't publicly addressed Belichick's future since the season began but spoke in generalities Saturday as a guest on ESPN's "College GameDay," which was live from Gillette Stadium before the Army-Navy game there.

Lions' Teddy Bridgewater enjoying final season before retiring

Detroit Lions quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is winding down his NFL career, telling the Detroit Free Press he plans to retire after the season. Bridgewater has been a little-used backup to Jared Goff in his single season with the Lions, appearing in one game to kneel out a victory over the Carolina Panthers in Week 5. But Bridgewater, 31, indicated he has no issues with his role. "Whatever was meant for me, it played out the exact way it was meant," Bridgewater told the Free Press for a story published Saturday. "And I'm still with that mindset every day, and I'm just really appreciative that I'm in Year 10. I tell everyone this is my last year, so I'm in my final year and I'm just enjoying it all, man." A first-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2014, Bridgewater's career was derailed by a torn ACL and dislocated knee suffered during training camp in 2016; he missed all of that season and most of 2017 before leaving the Vikings. He spent two seasons with the Saints (2018-19), started 29 games over two seasons for the Carolina Panthers (2020) and Denver Broncos (2021) and served as Tua Tagovailoa's backup with the Miami Dolphins last season, when he was limited by injuries again.

Source: Eagles staffer Big Dom gets regular-season bench ban

Philadelphia Eagles security chief Dom DiSandro will not have sideline access for the remainder of the regular season, a source confirmed to ESPN, but might return during the playoffs. DiSando was barred from being on the Eagles sideline for last week's game at the Dallas Cowboys after he got into a sideline scuffle with San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw the previous week. The NFL sent a memo to all teams last week reminding them to "please ensure that all members of your game-day staff understand that their role does not extend to being involved with game day altercations and that they must refrain from such involvement." Greenlaw was fined $10,927 last week for the hit on Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith that led to the sideline scrap.
