cowboys mike mccarthy: revisiting packers tenure 'won't help us win'
When the Dallas Cowboys return to practice Wednesday, they will hear nothing from coach Mike McCarthy about his tenure with the Green Bay Packers as they prepare to face his former team in the wild-card round of the playoffs Sunday. Before making his return to Lambeau Field last year, McCarthy openly discussed his time in Green Bay that included a Super Bowl victory in 2010 and a street being named in his honor near the stadium. The Cowboys ended up losing that game, 31-28 in overtime.

source: wink martindale to resigns as giants defensive coordinator
The Giants defense ranked 27th overall this past season but tied for the NFL lead with 31 takeaways. They were the team's best unit during a disappointing 6-11 season. Martindale's rocky relationship with coach Brian Daboll was at the heart of the divorce.

titans fire mike vrabel after 6 seasons
Vrabel, 48, led Tennessee to four consecutive winning seasons after arriving in 2018, but the Titans have experienced back-to-back frustrating seasons, finishing multiple games under .500 both times. The Titans finished 6-11 this season. Vrabel finishes his Titans tenure with a 54-45 record. He was 2-3 in the postseason, including in 2019 when he led Tennessee to the AFC Championship Game.

NFL averages 17.9M viewers in 2023, up 7% from previous year

NFL regular-season games averaged 17.9 million viewers in 2023, tied for the second highest since averages were first tracked in 1995. Buoyed by increases of at least 24% in two of the five packages, the first year of the league's new television contracts saw a total increase of 7% from last season. The highest average on record is 18.1 million from the 2015 season. Hans Schroeder, the league's executive vice president of media distribution, pointed to the number of teams still alive for the postseason going into the final two weeks along with close games throughout the 18-week regular season. Of the 272 games, 113 were decided by six or fewer points, the second-most in league history.

"Monday Night Football," the NFL's original prime-time package, had its best season since 2000, averaging 17.36 million viewers across ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC for a whopping 29% increase. With no new original fall programming due to the Hollywood writers and actors strikes, ABC broadcast games all 18 weeks of the regular season -- 11 more compared to 2022 -- instead of just nine over eight weeks as originally set when the schedule was announced in early May. Next season, ABC is expected to go back to at least two Monday night simulcasts with ESPN, three exclusive MNF games when there are doubleheaders and the two Saturday Week 18 contests.

Bears, Vikings, Jaguars, Panthers to each host 2024 game in Europe

The NFL has designated the four teams that will give up a home game in 2024 and host a game in Europe instead, the league announced Thursday. The Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars will each host a game in London, while the Carolina Panthers will host a game in Munich. Opponents and dates will be announced along with the rest of the NFL schedule in the spring. The NFL will not play in Mexico City due to renovations at Estadio Azteca. But the league previously announced plans to play a 2024 game at Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil. The NFL has not announced either team for that matchup.

When the NFL shifted to a 17-game regular season in 2021, it created a schedule formula that alternated nine and eight home games between NFC and AFC teams each year. Any team in the conference with nine home games is eligible to be designated to host an international game. The Jaguars, who are in the AFC, have a separate agreement to host home games in London. The Bears, Vikings and Jaguars all have international marketing rights in the United Kingdom, under the NFL's global market program, while the Panthers maintain rights in Germany.

best 2023 nfl rookies: final top 10 rankings, standout stats
Now that the regular season is over, we have arrived at our final top-10 rookie rankings. This ranking takes only the regular season into consideration, so anything that happened this past weekend in the playoffs is off limits and not factored into the top 10.

**********************
No.10: (RB) De'Von Achane, Miami
Stats: 103 carries, 800 rushing yards, 8 rushing TDs; 27 catches, 197 receiving yards, 3 receiving TDs
Drafted: No. 84 overall
2023 recap: The Dolphins' third-rounder was one of the league's most electric players when healthy, averaging 7.8 yards per carry. Achane also acquitted himself nicely as a receiving option out of the backfield, tying Robinson for the most receiving touchdowns by a rookie back (three).

T-8: (WR) Jordan Addison, Minnesota
Stats: 70 catches, 911 receiving yards, 10 TD catches
Drafted: No. 23 overall
2023 recap: With Justin Jefferson's injury, Addison stepped into a big role as a rookie and was more than ready for the moment. He was 89 yards shy of a 1,000-yard season and recorded 10 touchdowns. With the Vikings' offensive woes and quarterback carousel after Kirk Cousins was injured, Addison didn't put up big numbers consistently, but he had a couple of breakout games with two 100-yard performances, including one in a Week 7 win against the 49ers.

T-8: (RB) Bigan Robinson, Atlanta
Stats: 214 carries, 976 rushing yards, 4 rushing TDs; 58 receptions, 487 receiving yards, 4 TD catches
Drafted: No. 8 overall
2023 recap: Robinson entered his first season in the NFL with major expectations. Despite an unclear role and inconsistent involvement in a stagnant Falcons offense, his rookie year involved plenty of flashes. He concluded the season as a candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year and has proven he has the potential to be a lead back. Robinson has an uncanny ability to break tackles to create new opportunities even if runs aren't always blocked cleanly.

No.7: (RB) Jahmyr Gibbs, Detroit
Stats: 182 carries, 945 rushing yards, 10 rushing TDs; 52 catches, 316 receiving yards, 1 receiving TD
Drafted: No. 12 overall
2023 recap: David Montgomery led the Lions in rushing, but it was Gibbs who left many eager for more. Gibbs consistently flashed his speed and explosiveness -- 14.8% of his carries went for 10-plus yards, and his 18.98 mph max speed when crossing the line of scrimmage while running the ball was the 10th best measured this season, per NFL Next Gen Stats.

No.6: (DE) Will Anderson, Houston
Stats: 45 tackles, 7 sacks
Drafted: No. 3 overall
2023 recap: Anderson's pass rush win rate of 25.8% ranked third in the league, behind only Micah Parsons and Myles Garrett. Anderson plays a disruptive role for DeMeco Ryans' defense and currently is one of the top candidates for Defensive Rookie of the Year. His first-step quickness, power and active hands put him in a position to attack the pocket. He's a developing force with a high ceiling.

He holds a 302-165 regular-season record and a 31-13 playoff record -- eight wins better than Andy Reid, in second place with 23.

cowboys mike mccarthy not expected to get extension, sources say
The answer, simply enough, is no. Jones said he believes that a person in the last year of a contract is challenged in a different way, and it often can bring out the best in people -- which he is banking on happening in 2024 with McCarthy. Jones expected and asked the same of McCarthy's predecessor, Jason Garrett, who twice coached into the final year of his contract.

Experienced officiating crew to work Super Bowl

The NFL has named Bill Vinovich as its lead referee for Super Bowl LVIII, Vinovich's third such assignment and his second in the past five years. The league has kept a tight circle of referees in recent seasons for its most important game of the year. In addition to Vinovich, referee Carl Cheffers has also worked two Super Bowls in that five-year time period, with Ron Torbert receiving the other assignment. Vinovich's regular-season crews typically average the fewest, or close to the fewest, flags per game. In 2023, his crew averaged 13.4 flags per game, tied for the seventh fewest, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Vinovich also worked Super Bowls XLIX and LIV. His full crew for next month's game is as follows:

Joe Flacco throws support behind Damar Hamlin for Comeback POY

This year's NFL Comeback Player of the Year is a no-brainer. At least according to one finalist --Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco. Flacco, despite a resurgent season of his own, said during an appearance on the "Zack Gelb Show" on CBS Sports Radio on Friday that he believes Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin should win the award.

Hamlin had to be revived on the field last season after suffering cardiac arrest during a Monday night game against the Cincinnati Bengals. He was hospitalized for nine days following the incident. Hamlin played in three games this season, including Sunday's AFC divisional playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Flacco, meanwhile, didn't have an offer to play this season until the Browns signed him in December. He threw for 1,616 yards and 13 touchdowns in six starts, leading the Browns into the playoffs, where they lost 41-14 to the Houston Texans in the AFC wild-card round. Hamlin closed as a -400 favorite to win the award, according to ESPN BET, followed by Flacco (+320), Mayfield (+1100) and Stafford (+10000).
