Eagles to play in NFL's first game in Brazil to kick off '24

The Philadelphia Eagles will play host to the NFL's first regular-season game in Brazil, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced Monday in his state of the NFL media conference at Allegiant Stadium. The Eagles, who last played an international game in 2018, will face a to-be-announced opponent in São Paolo on Friday, Sept. 6, the day after the NFL season kicks off on Thursday night. This will be the NFL's first Friday game on opening weekend in more than 50 years. The NFL already plays international games in England and Germany and could be targeting Spain in 2025 as owners passed a resolution in the fall compelling each team to play an international game once every four years.

Julius Peppers, Dwight Freeney lead 2024 Hall of Fame class

The 2024 Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement class will honor defense as well as a player many consider the best kickoff/punt returner ever. The seven-member Class of 2024 will include defensive end Julius Peppers, defensive end Dwight Freeney and linebacker Patrick Willis. Devin Hester, the NFL record holder for kickoff and punt returns for touchdowns, and wide receiver Andre Johnson will also be enshrined as modern-era selections. Linebacker Randy Gradishar, who played in his last game in 1983, and defensive tackle Steve McMichael, who retired after the 1994 season, were senior finalists selected to be enshrined.

Adam Vinatieri among 1st-year Hall of Fame candidates for 2025

With Devin Hester's selection for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2024 as the player many say is the greatest all-time returner, the Class of 2025 will feature another special teams decision for the board of selectors. Kicker Adam Vinatieri, the NFL's all-time leading scorer (2,673 points with an NFL record 599 field goals), will be in his first year of eligibility for the Hall. He made 29 game-winning kicks in 24 seasons before retiring at age 48. He had game-winning kicks in Super Bowls XXXVI and XXXVIII. Former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick once called Vinatieri "the greatest kicker of all time who made the greatest kick of all time." That referred to Vinatieri's kick in the 2001 AFC playoffs in blizzard-like conditions, also known as the Tuck Rule game.

Quarterback Eli Manning, running back Marshawn Lynch and linebacker Luke Kuechly, an all-decade selection for the 2010s, will also be among those in their first year of eligibility. Lynch's powerful style launched plenty of highlights. He was a five-time Pro Bowl selection, finished his career with 10,413 rushing yards and led the league in rushing touchdowns twice. His 85 touchdowns are 17th all time, two touchdowns more than Hall of Famer Jim Taylor. Also in his first year of eligibility will be defensive end/outside linebacker Terrell Suggs, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection who finished his career with 139 sacks, eighth all time since sacks became an official statistic in 1982.

Ravens QB Lamar Jackson wins second career NFL MVP award

Though the season ultimately fell short of his expectations, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson still made history at Thursday evening's NFL Honors ceremony by winning The Associated Press' NFL MVP award for a second time. At 27, Jackson is the youngest two-time MVP since the merger, beating out Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes by just over nine months. Jackson was the landslide winner, receiving 49 of the 50 first-place votes to fall one shy of another unanimous selection. For the 2019 season, Jackson joined Tom Brady as the only players to get all 50 first-place votes for MVP.

Jackson was the landslide winner, receiving 49 of the 50 first-place votes to fall one shy of another unanimous selection. For the 2019 season, Jackson joined Tom Brady as the only players to get all 50 first-place votes for MVP. The other first-place vote for MVP this season went to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who finished fifth in the voting.

In addition to setting career highs with 3,678 passing yards and a 67.2% completion rate, he was the driving force for a Ravens team that finished with the NFL's top record at 13-4. He is the third quarterback since the 1970 merger to win MVP without a 1,000-yard rusher or a 1,000-yard receiver, joining John Elway (1987) and Favre (1996).

49ers fire D-coordinator Steve Wilks after one season

After just one season as the San Francisco 49ers' defensive coordinator, Steve Wilks is out. In Wilks' lone season with the Niners, the defense had its share of ups and downs. A unit that led the NFL in multiple categories in 2022 under DeMeco Ryans -- including fewest points per game allowed (16.3) and defensive expected points added (89.58) -- took a step back in 2023. San Francisco still finished third in points allowed (17.5) this season, but the 49ers were ninth in defensive EPA (41.48) and sprung significant leaks against the run in the playoffs, allowing the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs to average 5.1 yards per carry and 149.3 yards per game in the postseason.

After the Chiefs' win, defensive end Nick Bosa said the Niners weren't prepared for some of the designed running plays for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. During locker cleanout Tuesday, Bosa offered an assessment of Wilks' performance in 2023. Linebacker Fred Warner offered a more positive outlook on how things went, noting the Niners finished fifth in takeaways (28) and recorded 22 interceptions, which tied for first in the league. The 49ers will now begin the search for their third defensive coordinator in as many seasons.

NFL Competition Committee to pitch kickoff rule change

When the NFL opens play next season, Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones -- who is a member of the Competition Committee -- expects a change in the kickoff rule. Jones said he anticipates the committee to present to ownership in the spring meetings a one-year alternative that will make returns part of the game again. During the week, different options were presented -- including the XFL model in which the kicking team lined up at the opponents 35 and the return team lined up at the 30 with only the kicker and return allowed to move until the ball is touched. Of the 2,698 kickoffs in 2023, only 587 were returned with 1,970 touchbacks and 92 fair catches.

Dolphins, Vikings top players' survey of NFL teams; Chiefs 31st

The two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs were the second-lowest graded team in the NFL -- ahead of only the Washington Commanders in the second annual "report card" that ranks teams according to various categories based on the results of player surveys. More than 1,700 players -- up from about 1,300 last year -- participated in the survey between August and November, which was released by the NFLPA on Wednesday. Players were asked to grade their teams on a wide variety of subjects, ranging from team facilities to coaching staffs to owners. The top two teams in the overall survey were the same as last year, though they switched places, with the Miami Dolphins finishing ahead of the Minnesota Vikings this year.

But the Chiefs' ranking stands out, particularly since Andy Reid ranked first overall among 32 teams in the head-coach category, which is new this year and heavily weighted in the final grade. Chiefs owner Clark Hunt ranked last out of 32 team owners. Those grades were based on what players perceived as a willingness to invest in the team's facilities. The Chiefs ranked 26th in the food/cafeteria category, 31st in the nutritionist/dietician category, 31st in training room and 32nd in training staff.
