Source: Pass-rusher Whitney Mercilus to sign with Green Bay Packers

The Packers are turning to another veteran player who was recently released in an effort to help their banged-up defense. This time it's former Houston Texans edge rusher Whitney Mercilus. A source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Wednesday that Mercilus was signing with the Packers. It comes two weeks after the Packers signed former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith, who made his Green Bay debut on Sunday against the Bears. Mercilus, who was released by the Texans on Tuesday after spending 10 seasons with that franchise, turned down more money elsewhere to join Green Bay's defense, the source said. The Kansas City Chiefs were also in the mix for Mercilus, who had guaranteed money owed to him as part of his Texans deal, a source told Fowler. In six games for Houston this season, Mercilus, 31, has three sacks, four tackles for a loss, three quarterback hits and 12 tackles. His 57 sacks in 10 seasons for the Texans rank second in franchise history behind J.J. Watt, who had 101 sacks with Houston.

Los Angeles Rams trade LB Kenny Young to Denver Broncos

With a still-growing list of injuries at linebacker, the Denver Broncos acquired linebacker Kenny Youmg on Monday in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams. The Broncos sent the Rams a 2024 sixth-round draft pick in exchange for Young and a 2024 seventh-round pick. The 6-foot-1, 234-pound Young, in his fourth NFL season, had started all seven of the Rams' games this season and had played at least 40% of the snaps in six of them. He had a sack to go with seven tackles in Los Angeles' victory Sunday over the Detroit Lions. The Rams had acquired Young and a fifth-round pick in a 2019 trade that sent cornerback Marcus Peters to the Baltimore Ravens. A reserve in 2019 and most of 2020, Young earned a starting spot in training camp this season.

NFL trade grades: Report cards for the biggest 2021 deadline deals, how each team did, more
If we're all being honest here, the NFL trade deadline is more fun for the imagination than it is in reality. Dreams of remaking multiple franchises often descend into bit moves and short-term fixes, at least compared to the in-season blockbusters we see in other sports.

Sources: Odell Beckham Jr., Cleveland Browns agree to reworked contract as receiver set to hit waivers Monday

After days of negotiations, the Cleveland Browns and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. reached a settlement Friday that will result in him being placed on waivers Monday, after which he can be claimed Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, league sources said. The reworked contract is pending the NFLPA's approval, sources said. As part of the settlement of the reworked contract before it is terminated, the Browns agreed to remove the final two years of Beckham's deal, meaning he now is scheduled to be a free agent after this season, sources said. League sources believe it is unlikely that Beckham will be claimed on waivers Tuesday, which means he then would become a free agent.

Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers agree to deal

Quarterback Cam Newton has agreed to a deal with the Carolina Panthers that will bring him back to the team that he helped reach the Super Bowl in 2015, it was announced Thursday. The deal, which is pending a physical, is worth up to $10 million for the remainder of the season, including $4.5 million guaranteed and a $1.5 million roster bonus, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Panthers, who selected Newton with the first overall pick in the 2011 draft, released him following the 2019 season after he had struggled for several years with shoulder and foot injuries. They began a new regime with coach Matt Rhule at that time. The Panthers (4-5) began searching for options at quarterback after starter Sam Darnold suffered a shoulder injury Sunday that will sideline him four to six weeks. Newton last played for Carolina in the second game of the 2019 season before being sidelined after aggravating a Lisfranc injury suffered in the third preseason game. In nine seasons with Carolina, Newton is the franchise's career leader in passing yards (29,041), passing touchdowns (182) and rushing touchdowns (58). He ranks third with 4,806 rushing yards. According to Elias Sports Bureau data, Newton is 959 passing yards and 194 rushing yards from becoming the first player in NFL history to reach the 30K-5K club for a single team.

Former NFL running back Zac Stacy arrested in Florida after video shows him beating ex-girlfriend

Former NFL running back Zac Stacy, 30, has been arrested in Florida, records show.

The arrest comes after a surveillance video allegedly showed Stacy beating his former girlfriend in front of their 5-month-old son, according to a redacted arrest affidavit obtained by The Tennessean. An arrest warrant for Stacy was issued Wednesday, records show.

Stacy faces charges of aggravated battery (great bodily harm) and criminal mischief (under $1,000) and was booked into jail Thursday, according to Orange County Corrections Department records.
