Wayne Gretzky joins Turner Sports as NHL studio analyst


"The Great One" is headed from the front office to a cable television studio. Turner Sports has reached a multiyear agreement with Wayne Gretzky to be a studio analyst when its coverage of the National Hockey League begins in October. He will appear during key moments in the regular season -- including opening week and the Winter Classic and then throughout the Stanley Cup playoffs. Turner's seven-year agreement begins next season. Besides regular-season and playoff games, it also includes the 2023, 2025 and 2027 Stanley Cup Final on the TNT cable network.Gretzky said during a telephone interview with The Associated Press that the opportunity to join Turner, as well as some other changes, led to this being the perfect time to move into an analyst role. Gretzky and his wife, Janet, moved to Missouri earlier this year to be closer to his mother-in-law, who turns 100 in August.Gretzky said Turner reached out to him a couple of months ago about a potential role. He also received a recruiting pitch from former neighbor and TNT "Inside the NBA" analyst Charles Barkley. Even though he and Barkley are good friends, Gretzky said no one should expect him to have the same style or delivery as Barkley, who is a big hockey fan

Metropolitan Riveters being sold to BTM Partners as company's third NWHL team

The National Women's Hockey League's New Jersey-based Metropolitan Riveters are being sold to BTM Partners, which will now control three of the league's six franchises. The NWHL on Wednesday announced the transfer of ownership from W Hockey Partners, with John Boynton to serve as the Riveters' chairman. BTM already owns the Boston Pride and Toronto Six and is backing a bid to establish an expansion franchise in Montreal for the 2022-23 season. Boynton is the husband of Johanna Boynton, who oversees the Six. The NWHL allows groups to own more than one franchise as the league continues to transition from having previously operated each of its teams. Those teams were placed under the control of W Hockey Partners last year for the purpose of finding private owners. The Riveters' sale leaves W Hockey Partners owning the Buffalo Beauts and Minnesota Whitecaps and comes two weeks after the Connecticut Whale were sold to a group of investors led by Tobin Kelly. The Riveters were one of the NWHL's original four teams in 2015 and initially played in Brooklyn, New York. They moved to New Jersey in 2016 and are currently based in Monmouth Junction.

Goalie Taya Currie selected by Sarnia Sting, becomes first female Ontario Hockey League draft pick
The 16-year-old goaltender from Parkhill, Ontario, was selected in the 14th round, 267th overall, by the Sarnia Sting.

Andrew Mangiapane's two goals propel Canada past U.S. 4-2 in world hockey semifinals
Mangiapane has seven goals and four assists in six games since joining Canada midway through the preliminary round. Canada started the tournament with three straight losses, but has five wins and a shootout loss since Mangiapane was added to the mix.

Thanks to a one-year realignment, the first two rounds will be intra-divisional. Then, the four Cup semifinalists will be re-bracketed based on regular season record, with No. 1 facing No. 4, and No. 2 taking on No. 3.
