Two TV shows, and two upcoming films, all based on Grimm's Fairy Tales.
All because some executive saw his kid reading a book a couple of years ago. I hate Hollywood.
But this show is pretty good so far. Nice balance between realism and fantasy.

I just caught an advance look at Grimm.
VERY similar to Supernatural/Buffy, except the writing is really, really second-rate. Cop finds out he's also a legendary hunter of mythological vermin. Even ripped off Spiderman along the way.
The pilot covers all the cliches of the genre:
1. Funny/semi-helpful monster sidekick.
2. Black best friend who is supportive but mystified.
3. Hot fiancee who is "in grave danger"
4. Mentor older relative who is dying/passing on the mantle, and who only just this fucking minute thought to mention the whole "Legacy" thing.
5. Dead parents whose deaths turn out to not have been a "car accident".
6. Mysterious evil kingpin already out to get newly minted demon hunter. (srsly, the guy didn't even know who he was yesterday, how come nobody ever thinks to kill these guys before they get their powers?)
7. Superhot blond assassin, right hand to the kingpin.
8. Attempted assassination by toxic needle to unconscious victim.
9. Monsters disguised as humans that seem to be everywhere but only one guy can see them.
10. Handy ancient book of demons for the needed info to be used every week.
11. Magic key talisman that must never be lost.
12. Raised by matronly aunt who is a quirky, hipster librarian and secret ninja with a wardrobe full of medieval weaponry . (HI aunt May!)
13. Lots of funfilled hijinx moments when the newly minted deathdealer gets some of the myths wrong but others right.
I had hoped this series might be decent but it is possibly the worst hack piece of shit I have watched in a very long time. It was terrible in ways terrible has not yet been. I am disappoint.

It's definitely a serial, so they're probably looking for hardcore, internet-friendly fans who will follow it, much like Lost.
They take the fairytale part seriously, so the characters in the 'flashbacks' have fairly modern-day sensibilities. I thought the initial premise was pretty blatant; I'm assuming they have other story-tricks up their sleeve to turn this into a long-term show.

Well yeah, but they could have done it anytime -- I hate how different studios poach each others' ideas, and we end up with competing shows/films all coming out at the same time. It just makes them look stupid IMO.

Well like I said, the Grimm one was more a ripoff of Buffy/Supernatural and from what I saw won't be around long. On the plus side, I just watched Upon a Time and it was a far better show. I see the potential there for it to go deep into soap opera territory, but it could also become an excellent program. Robert Carlysle is a definite plus and I like the blond lead whoever she is. I also like the natural animosity built up between the evil queen/mayor and the blond girl, they have a natural reason for mutual loathing beyond the mystical fairy tale aspects.
Anyway, the rumor mill has UOAT as a direct ripoff of Fables, after ABC actually passed on doing a tv version of the Fables comic. There were rumblings of lawsuits but nothing came of it. The Grimm story is a ripoff of a ripoff.

OUAT has a strong soapy feel, like Desperate Housewives. Considering it's on Sunday opposite football I'd say they're going that route. Main storylines seem to be finding long lost children, true love conquers all, good vs evil and at least four strong female lead characters.
Grimm is going for videogame set, nobrain action superhero/ horror fans. Very different audience.

The fact that Grimm is scheduled on Fridays is a big indicator of the network's expectations for it. Only loser/outcast shows and/or shows that appeal to incredibly old people are scheduled on Fridays and Saturdays.
