Ryan Crouser completes three-peat in shot put at Olympics​

American Ryan Crouser became the first man to three-peat in the Olympic shot put on Saturday, adding another gold medal to his packed trophy cabinet with a mighty throw of 22.90 meters "Throwing a 16-pound ball is not easy on the body," Crouser said. "Throwing it as hard as you can, as far as you can beats you up. Crouser's compatriot Joe Kovacs won silver and Jamaica's Rajindra Campbell took bronze. The world record-holder battled with a nerve issue in his elbow this year but had no issues at the Stade de France as he produced his best throw of the season on his third attempt and clapped with satisfaction.

U.S. men's basketball earns top seed for Olympics' medal round​

For three years, Team USA has been planning, recruiting and refining to reach this upcoming week in Paris. And they've aligned things in excellent position to claim their fifth consecutive gold medal. The team took its final steps before heading to the French capital on Saturday, finishing off Olympic pool play 3-0 with a 104-83 victory over Puerto Rico to clinch the top overall seed in the medal round. That will begin Tuesday, when the U.S. will face Brazil in the quarterfinals at Bercy Arena at 3:30 ET. Also in Team USA's medal round bracket are Serbia and Australia; the winner of that game will face either the U.S. or Brazil. In the opposite bracket Canada faces France and Germany will play Greece. Katie Ledecky wins fourth straight 800m freestyle at Olympics​

Every year on August 3, Katie Ledecky is reminded of her first Olympic gold medal. She was just 15 years old, a reserved high schooler who had surprisingly made the U.S. swim team for the London Games. Then she went out and shocked the world, beating everyone in the 800-meter freestyle. Twelve years to the day, Ledecky did it again. Not a stunner, but one for the ages. Gold medal No. 9. Ledecky capped another stellar Olympics by becoming only the second swimmer to win an event at four straight Summer Games, holding off Ariarne Titmus, the "Terminator," to win the 800 free Saturday night. It was Ledecky's second gold medal in Paris and the ninth of her remarkable career, which marked another milestone. She became only the sixth Olympian to reach that figure, joining swimmer Mark Spitz, track star Carl Lewis, Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina and Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi in a tie for second place. The only athlete to win more golds: swimmer Michael Phelps with 23.

Netherlands' Femke Bol chases down U.S. in mixed relay to win gold​

Forget about mixed relay. This was a one-woman show. When Dutch sprinter Femke Bol entered the final turn of the 4x400-meter mixed relay in fourth position under a downpour, a medal -- let alone a victory -- seemed like a difficult proposition for her orange-clad team. That's when Bol accelerated into another gear and proceeded to reel in the three women ahead of her. Bol, whose best race is the 400 hurdles, ran the anchor lap in 47.93 seconds, and the Netherlands team of Omalla, Lieke Klaver, Isaya Klein Ikkink and Bol won the race at the Paris Olympics on Saturday in 3 minutes, 7.43 seconds -- 0.31 clear of the United States.

When it was over, Bol covered her mouth in disbelief, and her teammates shook their heads in amazement. Bol pulled a similar surprise last year at world championships in the women's 4x400, rallying from well behind late to earn a gold medal. That came after she tripped and fell in the home stretch of the mixed relay, where she was making up ground on the U.S. Bol will be back on the track Sunday for the opening round of the women's 400 hurdles, an event where she's expected to challenge world-record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. Bol won bronze in the 400 hurdles in Tokyo, but this was the first Olympic gold of her career.

His impressive career already featured a men's-record 24 Grand Slam trophies and the most weeks spent atop in the rankings by any man or woman. It also already contained a Summer Olympics medal, from 2008, but it was a bronze -- and he made it clear that simply wasn't sufficient.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh win Ukraine's first individual gold​

Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who was forced to flee her country due to the war with Russia, won gold at the Paris Olympics on Sunday. It was Ukraine's first individual gold of these Summer Games, following a victory in women's team saber fencing. Mahuchikh cleared 2.00 meters to finish ahead of Nicola Olyslagers of Australia, who also cleared 2.00 but then failed at all three of her attempts at 2.02. U.S swimmer Bobby Finke, 4x100 women's relay set world records​

The United States set two world records on the final night of swimming at the Paris Olympics on Sunday, winning the gold medal count over rival Australia and easing the sting of the first loss ever in the men's 4x100-meter medley relay. Bobby Finke set a new standard in the 1,500 freestyle and the American women closed a thrilling nine days at La Defense Arena with another record in their 4x100 medley relay. Finke was under world-record pace the entire race and really turned it on coming to the finish. He touched in 14 minutes, 30.67 seconds to break the record of 14.31.02 set by China's Sun Yang at the 2012 London Games.

Finke, who won the gold medal in the event in Tokyo, became the first male swimmer to go back-to-back in the grueling 30-lap event since Australia's Grant Hackett in 2000 and 2004 and the first American since Mike Burton in 1968 and 1972. The silver went to Italy's Gregorio Paltrinieri in 14.34.55, while race favorite Daniel Wiffen of Ireland couldn't follow up his triumph in the 800 freestyle. He was never a factor and settled for the bronze in 14:39.63, barely holding off Hungary's David Betlehem for the final spot on the podium.

U.S. men ousted from 3x3 Olympic tourney, finish pool play 2-5​

The U.S. opened pool play with four losses. Huge games by Barry, the son of Basketball Hall of Famer Rick Barry, lifted the team to wins over France and China before the Americans were eliminated Sunday with a 21-6 rout by the Netherlands. The U.S. is left wondering what could have been if Fredette wasn't injured The U.S. had the same number of wins in pool play as Poland but lost the tiebreaker because Poland beat the U.S. in the second game of the tournament. Defending champion Latvia and the Netherlands move to Monday's semifinals after finishing first and second in pool play. Latvia won all seven games in pool play and the Netherlands went 5-2. Lithuania faces Poland and Serbia meets France in play-in games Sunday night to determine the other semifinalists.

China hands U.S. first loss in men's 4x100m medley relay​

China stunned the U.S. by winning gold in the men's 4x100 medley relay on Sunday, a race the Americans had won at every Olympics other than the boycotted Moscow Games in 1980. The medley relay was added to the program in 1960. The Americans had to settle for silver in 3:28.01, with France taking bronze in 3:28.38 to give Léon Marchand his fifth medal of the games to go along with four individual golds.

The winning team included Qin Haiyang and Sun Jiajun, who were both among the nearly two dozen swimmers who tested positive for a banned substance at the Tokyo Games but were allowed to compete after a Chinese investigation ruled that they consumed food that had been contaminated. The result is sure to stir more hard feelings from other nations that feel the Chinese got away with cheating.

Noah Lyles wins gold for U.S. in 100m by .005 seconds​

Since last August, Noah Lyles has stood firm and unequivocal in his belief that the title of "world's fastest man" belongs to him. Sunday night at the Stade de France, he proved it. With a personal-best 9.784-second time that edged him past a world-class field full of elite sprinters, Lyles walked away with his first Olympic gold medal in the 100-meter final. He earned the victory by beating the man with the world's fastest time this year, Jamaica's Kishane Thompson, by .005 seconds. Lyles' only other Olympic medal is a bronze, which he earned in the 200 at the Tokyo Games three years ago.

IOC says boxers in gender dispute to remain in Paris Olympics​

The two women boxers at the heart of a gender dispute at the Paris Olympics will stay in the competition for as long as they keep winning because they meet all eligibility criteria, the International Olympic Committee said Monday. The IOC is in charge of holding the boxing tournament in Paris after stripping recognition of the International Boxing Association last year following failure to implement governance and finance reforms. Algerian boxer Imane Khelif and Taiwan's double world champion Lin Yu-ting, who have reached the semifinals of their respective weight divisions, were cleared to compete at the Games despite having been disqualified during the 2023 World Championships. The IBA on Monday said the boxers failed an eligibility test after having undergone a chromosome test during the 2023 worlds, and that the IBA had informed the IOC at the time. The boxing body insists the fighters should not be competing in Paris. After four Olympic gold medals, Vincent Hancock has had to settle for a silver. Italy edged the United States 45-44 on Monday in the final of the first Olympic mixed team skeet competition, the first time U.S. shooter Hancock has won a medal of any color other than gold in an Olympic career going back to 2008. Team USA basketball honors identity in Olympic medal round​

Distractions are everywhere in Paris, and the pressure of the Olympics is on the increase as Team USA enters this final stress-inducing run. The Americans begin their defining week with a basic mantra: Keep it simple and stay with your identity. After playing three games in a 14-day span, Team USA needs to win three in a five-day span, beginning Tuesday in the quarterfinals against Brazil (3:30 p.m. ET), to bring home its fifth consecutive gold. Over the past month, the Americans have honed a style that has led them to a perfect 8-0 record, including exhibitions. As they made final preparations Monday, there was a collective mindset to stay with the plan.

Ten different players average at least seven points a game. All 10 average at least six shots per game, and no one averages more than 10. It has led to excellent efficiency -- they are shooting 54% as a team. Kerr has 11 players on the roster averaging between 18-22 minutes, and he has prioritized having size, leaning into playing three centers in his rotation most of the time. The U.S. has been marginally outrebounded by its opponents so far, 124-123, but it has been allowing 14 offensive rebounds per game. Brazil averages 13 offensive rebounds per game, and Kerr said he's expecting the team to try to "maul" the Americans on the boards.

He beat Kerr by .14 seconds, while Ingebrigtsen, who set the pace through the first 1,200 meters, ended up in fourth in a time faster than his Olympic record set in Tokyo. American Yared Nuguse also set a personal best to win the bronze.
