U.S. heavily favored vs. France for Olympic men's hoops gold

With the United States men's basketball team entering the Olympics as a -550 favorite to win the gold medal, fulfilling its destiny has often felt like an inevitability. That sense of security evaporated when the squad of NBA superstars nearly lost to Serbia during Thursday's semifinal: After entering the fray as 15.5-point favorites, USA was as long as +300 on the live money line and +5.5 on the live spread near the end of the third quarter. But after surviving the scare, the American men are back to being the big favorites for the gold medal game. Team USA opened as a -14.5 favorite over host nation France and has moved to -16.5 for Saturday's showdown, per ESPN BET odds. Since the United States' bronze medal in 2004, the team has typically been a big favorite in Olympic gold medal games, sporting -21 and -20 spreads against Spain in 2008 and 2012, respectively, -15 against Serbia in 2016, and -12.5 against France at the delayed 2020 Games, per ESPN Stats & Information. Over that stretch, Team USA is 1-3 against the spread, covering only in 2016.

France, with its own cadre of NBA stars led by Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert, entered the Olympics as one of the more likely teams to take down the Americans, showing +1100 odds to win gold, tying it with Canada for second on the odds board. The French moved down from +1300 at open, likely owing to a large influx of bets: ESPN BET reported at the beginning of the tournament that Les Bleus received 24.8% of tickets, tying the United States, which had significantly more handle. That number shrank as the tournament progressed, but the U.S. and France were heavily bet on a game-by-game basis throughout the festivities: The top five most-bet men's basketball games at the Paris Games for ESPN BET and DraftKings involved the Americans or the French.

Unselfish U.S. makes 8th-straight Olympic final in women's hoops

It's hard to quantify the greatest passing teams in basketball history -- the Argentina men from the 2000s or perhaps the San Antonio Spurs from the mid 2010s have a case. But it is fair to say this version of the Team USA women, masters of the art, are among the candidates. Watching the Americans execute offense and share the ball over the last two weeks in France has been somewhere between a clinic and an exhibition. The ball moves with an unselfishness, confidence and ease that belies the idea this team was relatively rushed together. The display Friday night was brilliant and at the same time typical, as Team USA racked up 31 assists on their way to an 85-64 semifinal victory over Australia. The Americans, now winners of 60 consecutive Olympic games, will play for their eighth straight gold medal Sunday.

Nikola Jokic leads Serbia to Olympic basketball bronze

Nikola Jokic had the fifth triple-double in Olympic history as Serbia beat Germany 93-83 to win the Olympic men's basketball bronze medal Saturday. Jokic finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists to help Serbia claim its first medal since winning silver in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Serbia bounced back after nearly upsetting the four-time defending gold medalist U.S. in the semifinals. Vasilige Micic added 19 points, and Bogdan Bogdanovic finished with 16. The game was a rematch of last year's FIBA World Cup final, which was won by Germany. Serbia led throughout in this one, building as much as a 19-point lead in the third quarter.

Frank Wagner had 19 points to lead Germany Moritz Wagner added 16. The World Cup title was part a 12-game winning streak in major international competition for the Germans, who won their first four games in Paris to reach the semifinals. But they lost their final two, also falling to host France on Thursday. Germany made a push late in the fourth quarter, whittling Serbia's lead to 82-74 on a layup by Wagner. Serbia responded with an 11-4 run to push it back above double digits.

American Masai Russell wins Olympic women's 100m hurdles gold

America's Masai Russell won a photo finish Saturday in the women's 100-meter hurdles, where the biggest cheer came for Cyréna Samba-Mayela, whose silver medal marks the first of any color for France at the Olympic track meet. In a close-as-can-be race down the straightaway, Russell finished in 12.33 seconds, but had to wait another 15 seconds to learn she had beaten the Frenchwoman by .01. Defending champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, who competes for Puerto Rico, was another .02 back for bronze. By finishing second, Samba-Mayela broke a shutout for the host country on the last day of action at the Stade de France.

Olympics: USWNT edges Brazil to win 5th gold, 1st since 2012

The U.S. women's national team won the Olympic gold medal on Saturday, beating Brazil 1-0 in a game that required a stout defensive stand in the first half followed by a precise and calculated surge in the second to deny Brazil and its legendary captain Marta. Mallory Swanson scored the winning goal in the 57th minute with a slick finish after running through on goal.
