Dont use sunflowers they expensive. use the shrooms. They grow and give you a big sun after a while instead of a small one. 2 rows is good and all you need.

Use the free mushrooms (the purple ones) at first to defend your sunshrooms, then add two rows of green pea shooters, while filling the rest up with the free purple shrooms and getting rid of all the graves.

That should get you thru the first few flags until you can choose more plants. When you choose more, choose the expensive green pea shooter, the blue pea shooter, and the walnut.

You want to dig everything up slowly exept the sun shrooms, make one row of blue shooters, and as many expensive green shooters as you can. Add a row of walnuts on the right hand columb. This should see you thru a few levels. When you've almost filled the screen, you need the pear shaped one and the explody one, and when it gets a bit much for your walnuts, you blow up or squish some zombies to help out.

That's how I got the bigass score (and this was only my 3rd attempt)

Although I play the proper game a lot.
