RIP Karl 1991-2014
Yeah, jack, things have changed.
The last little ones I taught were pre-school (4 and 5 year olds), and they were learning pre-reading and writing skills. Most had learned to write letters, some even knew how to write their names. All could recite their colors in Spanish.
The push for reading readiness is getting younger and younger. Don't get me started on phonics vs. whole language instruction...
For me:
Preschool: Addition, subtraction, very basic reading and writing.
Kindergarten: More complex reading/writing, basic multiplication.
First grade: More complex multiplication, writing "research essays" (like one sheet about a particular dinosaur or some shit and a picture) based on info we found in the library.
Second grade: Division, filling lame project boards and doing class presentations, multipage typed papers.
Third grade: Fractions
That's about when I stopped learning. :S:
