Sexuality in Star Trek wikipedia

I stumbled across this whilst googling the following phrase...

"tom paris star trek gay pictures"

...don't ask why I was googling that, i'm sure you can figure it out.;)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexuality_in_Star_Trek

Anywho, I skimmed through the wiki page & it is very interesting. All aspects of sexuality are discussed as well as quotes on the subject from various Star Trek actors & Gene Roddenberry.

If only Roddenberry had not died...
Roddenberry also promised that in the upcoming fifth season of TNG, gay crew members would appear on the show (The Advocate). Other stars of the franchise chimed in, with Leonard Nimoy (who played Spock) offering his support in a 1991 letter to the Los Angeles Times:
It is entirely fitting that gays and lesbians will appear unobtrusively aboard the Enterprise — neither objects of pity nor melodramatic attention."
However, Roddenberry died soon after his interviews and the announced plans to have a gay crew member on TNG never materialized. Control of the Star Trek franchise fell to Rick Berman.
Rick Berman is a homophobe...
In an exclusive interview with AfterElton, Andy Mangels--Trek's only openly gay writer, having written over a dozen Star Trek themed novels--says he believes blame lies with Berman. “I have never met Rick Berman, and he has never expressed any specific attitudes directly to me. That said, not one single actor, staff member, or Paramount employee has ever once defended him from charges of homophobia, and many have accused him of it.

"Berman was ultimately responsible for killing almost every pitch for gay characters, and in interviews, was mealy-mouthed and waffling about the need for GLB T representation. At the very least, he was gutless and didn't care about GLBT representation. From the information and evidence I've seen, heard, and read, I believe that Berman is the reason we never saw gays on Star Trek I shed no tears that he's gone, except that he did his best to ruin the franchise on his way out.”

Yeah, that is an interesting article. Gene quite admirably changed his views and spoke out against prejudice, it's a shame Berman couldn't do the same. I guess he didn't see gay people as being part of the rather stale human race of the future.

Berman told Avery Brooks to "stop being such a ######" once and Brooks punched him out.

PICARD NEVER HIT ME! screamed Berman.

Hopefully the future of Trek will have more open minded creative people in charge of the franchise.

I like what Nimoy said...

but...but...innit in their genes or something?

It never would have flown. It would have received media attention, become political and might have even prematurely end the franchise. Berman, whilst being a huge ass, might have done something right.

Bullshit. He was too stubborn and willfully uncreative to devise a story (or even greenlight a story from someone else) in which the subject could be brought up in a matter-of-fact way. He was a total homophobe when it came to Trek, and the franchise is worse for his cranky-old-whiteguyism.

Something as simple as a crewman talking about his partner in casual conversation while eating/drinking with crewmates? Never. A 2-second shot of two guys saying a tearful goodbye to each other during an abandon-ship? Never.

How much funnier would it have been if the huge Hawaiian hunk at Jadzia's 'bachelor' party ran out the next morning saying his boyfriend was going to kill him?

Berman kept his thumb firmly pressed over anything like this. Deliberately and maliciously. He didn't do anyone any favors in this area.

You make a good case, sir.

And there are some ignorant pricks that will use the fact that there were NO gays depicted in Star Trek to further their homophobia. There are many fans already saying that there are no gays in Trek because it was cured in the future. How dangerous a perception is that to send to people? You are gay, you are different, well don't worry about it, your gayness/disease will be cured in the future!??

The same shit holds true for "Don't ask, don't tell"...as long as this policy holds up, certain people will think gay people are not as good as straight people & use this as a tool for homophobia. IMO.

Rick Berman was NOT a visionary in his perception of the future. It is so sad that Gene Roddenberry passed away when he did...as he stated, he overcame his homophobia & planned on introducing gay characters in the 5th season of TNG. Gene grew to realize that there was a place for everyone in the future, with NO prejudices.

I wonder if it was Berman's idea to give Sulu a daughter.

Gay in real life? I'll make damn sure you're hetro in the show.

At least there was hints about gayness in DS9.

Andy Robinson always played Garak like he went both ways.

Well the real reason was because George Takei wasn't going to be in the movie and Moore and Braga lazily shifted Sulu's scripted lines to his daughter.

It never would have flown. It would have received media attention, become political and might have even prematurely end the franchise. Berman, whilst being a huge ass, might have done something right.

I BET SOMEONE SAID THAT TO GENE WHEN HE WANTED TO HAVE A BLACK WOMAN ON THE BRIDGE.

They were more concerned about Spock's "demonic" appearance IIRC.

Well Gene did originally want Spock to be red with a forked tail.

Would it be considered illogical for a vulcan to be gay?

I was just wondering about this. :)

Well if its nature and not just a choice then it would be illogical to fight it.

It would be just like the Vulcan's to have an immune gene to homosexuality.

But then klingons would have five redundant back up genes for it, so it balances out.
