No, smart people knew that it was a bad idea because the man's an inexperienced egoist with socialist ideations and a number of fundamentally bad, totalitarian ideas about the role of government; not because of something so meaningless as skin colour. I'm reading it that since he voted for Obama who's OMG BLACK, he's not a racist, not that everyone that didn't vote for Obama is racist. His "I'm not racist" came after a two full stops after he said that he voted for him. If it was in the same sentence, then sure, it could read that way, but I actually think he's pretty clear on what he's saying here.
