Star Trek links and videos

The CGI tea sets created a kind of uncanny valley feeling that suits the general creepy vibe of the videos.

He's currently doing his career best work on The Leftovers. Which makes it all the more baffling when he sounds like an idiot in interviews.

You make a fan film for 50 quid, noone is going to sue, you make a fan film for a million dollars, you are going to get the licence holders attention.

Usually I take the side of the underdog in these situations, but in this case CBS has a legitimate grievance IMO.

Yes, Axanar's very good quality (looking. Could still have crap acting.), but the makers of it are using it to fund the creation of an entire studio company. A rival studio making Star Trek that is indiscernible from the real thing is a problem, particularly when they've raised $1 million. And I don't know exactly how these Kickstarter things work, but presumably any funds they don't use on the project essentially become profits to be distributed among the crew.

Hopefully something can be worked out, as Axanar has been sounding like it'll be quite good. But if it does get completely shut down I hope it won't effect other fan shows, like the excellent Star Trek Continues.

Fan films are allowed when they don't make money, as soon as people start getting paid for working on a film then its game over.

I was reading the TrekBBS thread on Axanar. The director guy seems like a raging egomaniac. CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar - The Trek BBS

CBS SUES AXANAR!

Well, it appears CBS knows that Axanar is exactly what fans want, because they are trying to shut us down! While Team Axanar will have a response shortly, know this DOES NOT deter us from what we are doing! Delivering to fans exactly what you want.

Goliath, meet David (and his thousands of screaming fans)!

"Screaming fans."

I am sure Axanar will be exactly what the fans wanted, like the captain Sulu show, and the captain Worf show.

It's the most entertaining fan film situation since that really bad fan film we posted about but I can't remember the name of!

You might be thinking of Renegades, Wacky, which stars Walter Koenig. It's actually pretty good. A kind of Firefly setup in the Trek universe. A bunch of misfits, including Icheb, go around sorting out problems that Starfleet can't officially deal with.

Anyway, I've disliked the Axanar guy for some time (he dealt with the BSG wiki and the auction that sold off all the props and wotnot, as well as some Star Trek ones). He's always seemed too big for his boots. Of course being accused of copyright infringement feeds his ego.

I'm watching Renegades right now. It's not bad. Impressive cast for a fan project. Sets and costumes are hitor miss, but the CGI is impressive.

How did CBS not have a problem with this one? Did they just manage the money better?

I don't know, but I'd guess they raised a fraction of the amount Axanar did, so it was clearer that all the money was going on the production, rather than going straight into someone's pockets. Also, it was directed or produced (or both?) by Tim Russ, so maybe he had the inside track on what measures had to be taken to avoid stepping on anyone's toes?
